ESPN says Arrington is to blame for loss

Post by hkHog »

5. Joe Gibbs and Gregg Williams' problem with LaVar Arrington could best be seen on Mike Alstott's alleged one-yard, two-point conversion plunge.

Arrington, Washington's first-down linebacker, tried for a SportsCenter moment rather than a basic tackle on Alstott's run. Arrington left his feet, dived at Alstott and totally whiffed. Had Arrington simply stepped into the gap, lowered his shoulder, dropped his hips and exploded, the Redskins would've won the game.

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/st ... ock/051117

Now that is just some BS! He obviously didn't watch the game and see Alstott going airborn for the goalline on every chance he had. I think Arrington actually made the smart play jumping over the top. If Alstott would have tried leaving his feet again Lavar would have stopped him. Had Lavar not jumped and Alstott would have leaped he would have scored easily. Instead Lavar took that possibility out of the picture.

Every week Jason Whitlock's "Truths" are just so stupid! In fact, they are not truths at all, just stupid made-up stuff that he writes just to get attention. I also think Gibbs said it very well yesterday when he stated:

I never feel like a referee's call cost you a game. You play your way out of a game. It's never one player. It's never one call.

Maybe Whitlock should learn that!

ESPN blames Arrington? That's funny. Because whatever Arrington did, Alstot didn't make it in. The blame goes to the booth for not having the marbles to over turn the call.

You got it right, nkHog.

Had Arrington stopped a leap by Alstott, they would have been singing all praises to the "gutsy" move by our star linebacker. And why wasn't he playing for those few weeks, by the way, if he's this good. . .

The worst option would have been if Lavar hadn't jumped, Alstott did, and we lost the game on that same move that they had run earlier (and that KC did the week before). Then ESPN would be all "why didn't Gibbs take five minutes to review film," or "couldn't he see it coming after they tried it earlier in the game? I guess not; he's too old. . ." and so on.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

And, now that I think about it. What if the refs had gotten the right call on the field or in the instant replay? Then ESPN would be talking about how great Lavar's leap was because it forced Alstott to stay on the ground, where the 'Skins stopped him. . .

The possibilities are endless. ESPN is going to report what they will, and in the meanwhile we just have to sit here licking the wounds left over from that game. I personally can't let them make my week worse, so I choose not to listen to their blabber.

That entire column was junk journalism..from taking shots at Bill Parcells to making assinine comments about players and coaches on other teams.

I'm afraid of where journalism is going...pretty soon there will be no "news reporters" just a buch of sensationalistic articles intentionally written to entertain people rather than inform them.

He also called Belichick the greatest coach of the modern era.

I don't know what his definition of "modern" is (the last 3 years? 5 years?), but he's not going to get very far before hitting coaches that make such a claim highly questionable. I personally think of the "modern" era of football as being after the merger. Maybe he meant "contemporary" or "post-modern"

I've watched the replay a hundred times. had arrington not vaulted himself he would have filled the hole and run smack dab into....the fullback leading the play. even if arington knocks the fullback over, the time it takes for contact allows alstott to push forward, lowering his head and barreling into the endzone.

perhaps the guys at espn should watch the game before they say silly things.

If I lived for a million years, I still wouldn't care what ESPN say. Strangely, the BBC haven't expressed their opinion yet.

Alsott didnt make it in, so maybe the guy should look at games before opening their mouth. These "experts" are really making me mad, half of them never played in the NFL and they are so fickle. Arrington jumped and it worked because Alsott never crossed the white line.

Take the comments with a grain of salt. If you've read this column in the past, he makes comments designed to get a rise outta people. Heck, it sometimes includes references to letter supermodels or actresses have written him. If you've seen Whitlock, you KNOW this ain't true. My 2 cents

Anywho, it's not like getting mad at Whitlock is gonna turn our "L" into a "W". It's time to beat Oakland, so next week Whitlock writes the "truth" about the Skins being a playoff team.

HE is a liar anyways because Arrington didn't whiff. He knocked him off course and allowed the team to take him down.

It goes both ways, Arrigntion could have been more disciplined and just stood his ground. But if Alsot would have gone airborn it wouldnt have been no chance to stop him, he's too big.

Watch the replay over and watch Ryan Clark hit Alstott right before Lavar would have hit him. It's definately NOT Lavars fault. It's the teams fault. We shouldn't have let the score the last 2 TD's before that. Lousy pressure on the QB, Lousy coverage. We made Simms look good.

Bottom Line: "Mr. Can't Get Right" BLEW his "gamble" by making his typical bone-headed play.

He hasn't done jack spit alllllllllllllllllllll year. Name one game changing play that idiot made. One. You can't.

If we do not make the playoffs it is specifically because of him.

I am tired of people like him and Samuels and Jansen mouthing when they aren't worth the hot air they spew. Not one of them is a true Redskin instead they are all talk.

Typical.

Arrington jumping over the pile accomplished nothing. I think had he just gone for the tackle at least he would have been involved in the play. However, he ended up jumping over everyone without being close enough to do anything.

I dont know why peole have to explaing this, i've explained twice already in different threads. The NFL moves to fast for a linebacker to figure out where the runner is going and then make the tackle when they only need ONE YARD. Alstot when high on his 2 TD runs, and LaVar when to college, and probably took some math classes, so the probablility that Alstot would go high on this play was enough for LaVar to jump in that direction and hope he hits him. Thats all, I dont pretend to know everything about football, and I understand this concept.

Jason Whitlock is a fat, p.o.s has-been athlete who tries to make himself out to be a better player than he actually was by writing pathetic columns which suggest he has only a very elementary understanding of English and where he makes incredibly lame attempts at humor. Being employed by ESPN is not something that conveys wisdom or intelligence.

I agree, Why dont we start talkin bout the real defensive bonehead plays that Walt Harris continues to make week after week.

Arrington led the team in tackles in his first real game back (with decent playing time) this season. that says a lot on this defense and if you listen to the post game interviews with Sonny and Sam, all the defensive players talk about Lavar having great games week after week.

We are only fans, these are the guys on the field sweating with each other and waking up on monday morning feeling half dead. Maybe we should stop taking shots at Lavar and listen to what the players have to say and not those a** clown ESPN monkey lovers

Actually, remove "athlete" from that and you have a pretty solid description of most sports columnists.
