Norv Turner Years

Post by USS Redskin »

Since Norv is coming back to town, I was just wondering about peoples opinions on Norv now. Was 2000 his fault?
I wanted to kill him during the Giants game for sending in the kicker at the end.... What a great team that could have been.
I liked him as a person - through a contact he got me and some buddies on field passes to the Skins at Colts game in 1999. I stood right next to Darrell Green - It was one of the greatest days of my life. They lost but it was still great to be on the sidelines next to the team I have loved for 30 years.
I can never forgive the 1996 collapse when they went 7-2 and finished 9-7. What a disgrace.
I guess his legacy is underachieving but they did have a great team in 1999 - even they underacheied a bit.
I feel sorry for him now, that Oakland job is a no win situation.
Just beat Dallas - they are A-H****

I always thought Norv was best suited to be an Offensive Coordinator. I was never big on him as our head coach.

Actually, I feel the same about Spurrier in the NFL. I feel that he would make a great O Coordinator but just couldn't handle the head coaching style in the NFL.
The opinion of 10,000 men is of no value if none of them know anything about the subject.

a 7 year run of trial and error with a nfc east title thrown it there with a playoff loss to the bucs.

norv is a solid offensive cordinator but head coach he leaves a little to be desired .

he also lacked discipline to boot and his teams showed it as well.

My 2 cents

Once a puke, always a puke.....never could stand the guy and hated the decision to bring him to DC.

My 2 cents
God bless our troops and Joe Gibbs.
We'll miss you, Joe.

I came into consciousness as a Redskins fan during the Norv era. I always thought he was a great playcaller--even with the 3rd and long draw plays. :)

I would agree with what probably most people will say--maybe he'll be a great offensive coordinator again some day, but he'll never be a great head coach.

I hated Norv. I'm so glad he got fired in the middle of the season. It served him well. That guy was horrible as a head coach. I wish him nothing but misery, pain and suffering on Sunday.

I thought Norv had it going in thr right direction...I fault DS for bringing in high priced FA's and not spending any money on a kicker. If Norv had had a kicker that year he would have made the playoffs and who knows...

Achieved almost nothing during his time in DC. Mediocrity was the order of the day. I'm sure he is a very nice guy, but he is a less than average head coach.

I think the Skins ruined him as a coach. Granted, he was no leader of men, but to pull the rug out from under him, before the end of the season really hurt his chances to EVER be a susccesful HC. That being said, his skills as an OC are primo!!

Whoever thought a kicker would be the difference in a season (2000) - It was, though. We lost at least 3 games b/c of missed field goals. Maybe more.
They had a great Ray Rhodes Defense. Brad Johnson split time with Jeff George but still put up good numbers and Larry Centers was THE MAN! He and Stephen Davis - what a backfield!
ahhh... what could have been.
The Skins had Akers that year and cut him after like 2 games - now he is one of the best in the league.

I see the same problems in Oakland with Turner there as there were here. The one thing that stands out the most for me about the Norv Turner era is Gus Ferrotte head butting the wall and injuring himself.

He needs to go hide in the offensive coordinators booth, earn his $600K per year, and never stand on the sidelines again. He is just a terrible coach. No balls, and no fire from him. Decent offensive coordinator.

Some people are not meant to be a head coach and Norv is one of them. How he has had so many opportunities baffles me.

Hey, I liked Norv, in 99 we were a botched snap away from the NFC Championship. Since 91 thats the furthest any coach has gotten us, and to this point even Joe. However there is still 7 games and playoff run away from changing that!!

I think if you look back at Norv's record with the Redskins it was something like this:

3-13
6-10
9-7
10-6
NFC East Title

Then Mr. Snyder tried to buy the championship and became very impatient, when we struggled he freaked. At that time I thought Norv had lost the respect of his players and it was time for him to go, but I always liked him. I hate how it ended for him here but I suppose it's just the nature of the business.

I agree! You guys are all bashing him like he was the worst head coach ever. He had four winning seasons here as a head coach. Was he my favorite? No. But he won a lot of game for us. I remember when he was head coach that people actually worried when they faced the Redskins....thats something we haven't seen since 1999.

I liked him as a person but as most have said, he wasn't Head Coach material. He was there long enough to build the team he wanted and still couldn't win a playoff game. Personally I never saw his "offensive genius" side, he wasn't the worst coach we have ever had, but he also wasn't the best.

I trully dislked the guy. Had no leadership whatsoever. Danny didn't respect him and should have gotten rid of him sooner. Not the worst ever (Spurrier holds that position).

Please, don't. I can't bear to remember these years without nausea.
How many frickin' Cowboys did he bring with him, or bring up after he signed on ?
I can recall that tight end Turner and Alvin Harper.
Oh, the Squire was so proud. It was blasphemy to a longtime fan like me. Seeing Petitbon pushed aside like that drove me nuts.

We had all kinds of Cowboys. Alvin Harper, Scott Gailbreath (the tight end youre thinking of), James Vanderbeek, James Washington, Rodney Peete, John Gesek, etc.

Peete, Washington, Gailbreath, and Gesek weren't bad.

And to think I came of age during the Turner years.... :puke:
