Patten Listed as Doubtful For Raiders Game
By Gary Fitzgerald
Redskins.com
November 16, 2005

Wide receiver David Patten sat out practice on Wednesday with knee soreness and is listed as doubtful for this Sunday's game against the Oakland Raiders.

Patten is expected to visit a doctor this week for further evaluation of the knee, which first flared up late last week. The 9-year veteran had missed last Friday's practice, although he was able to play in the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

"It's been bothering him for the last couple of weeks," head coach Joe Gibbs said. "Last week he sat out one day of practice, but he went ahead and played the whole game. I think it's just an irritation. We want to look at it and make sure there's nothing more serious."

Patten has started all nine games this season and has caught 22 passes for 217 yards. Last Sunday, he caught three passes for 24 yards.

If Patten is unable to play, the Redskins would have just three wide receivers on the 53-man roster: Santana Moss, James Thrash and Taylor Jacobs. Oakland has listed cornerback Charles Woodson as out for Sunday's game, so the Redskins could catch a break with the Raiders missing one of their top defenders.

Thrash has seen limited work as a receiver this year since he has taken over as the team's primary punt return specialist. He has 13 receptions for 153 yards this season. Early in the season, he converted several key third-down plays, and one fourth-down play in a drive that helped the Redskins come back in the Week 2, 14-13 win at Dallas.

"I really and truly wish that, in a lot of ways, if James wasn't carrying such a big load on special teams, we'd get him the ball more," Gibbs said. "His production last year given the balls thrown to him was the best I've ever seen in terms of percentage of catch."

Jacobs was slowed by a toe injury early in the season and has not been able to get involved as much in the offense this year. He has just two catches for 33 yards this season.

"I spoke to Taylor today--he worked very hard to get ready this year, as hard as I've seen anybody work," Gibbs said. "The injury set him back. But now I think he's healthy and this is a chance for him to really help the team. There's nobody who deserves it more than he does."

Rookie wide receiver Rich Parsons, a Maryland product, could be a candidate to be called up from the practice squad if Gibbs decides he needs a fourth wide receiver for this Sunday's Oakland game at FedExField.

Elsewhere on the injury front, safety Sean Taylor (ankle) and defensive tackle Cornelius Griffin (hip) remain listed as questionable. Neither practiced on Wednesday.

Ladell Betts is also listed as questionable with a knee injury. He did not practice on Wednesday.

"It feels okay," Betts said. "It's a minor setback."

If Betts cannot play, Rock Cartwright would likely take over as the primary backup to Clinton Portis. Also, Thrash and Cartwright would likely share the load on kickoff returns.

This shouldn't be that big of a deal because he clearly hasn't produced any way. Maybe the week off will help his performance a bit.
"I was on the sideline and guys were talking about the score, and then it hit me -- we won by 21. I came in the locker room and I yelled it out, and immediately I just kind of broke down in tears. Because I miss Sean, you know."

he'll catch more balls on the sidelines than he will on the field.
Sean, may you always rest in peace and look down on us with the same love that we look up to you.

Maybe he's suffering from the same injury Lavar "had". You know, the one that flared up every time he went public with his grievances. After all, two weeks ago (when the knee allegedly flared up), Patten was "frustrated". My 2 cents

Exactly what I was thinking. But look at it this way, now we only have 3 Active WR

Well we can line Portis up at WR like we did a couple of times during the Philly game. Also this may be the chance Jacobs needs to come off the bench and set up.

Rich Parsons showed a little promise near the end of the pre- season. Maybe he's done enough in practice to be activated

When he's healthy, lets not forget that Gibbs has some stuff for Sean Taylor at Wide Receiver....if we make the playoffs we could see that.

Patten Placed On IR; Redskins Sign Parson
By Gary Fitzgerald
Redskins.com
November 18, 2005

Wide receiver David Patten underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on Friday morning, a procedure that will sideline him for the remainder of the season.

The Redskins have placed Patten on the injured reserve list, the team has announced. To fill Patten's roster spot, the Redskins signed rookie wide receiver Rich Parson, who will make his NFL debut on Sunday against the Oakland Raiders at FedExField.

Patten to IR, Parson called up

Post by Kearney420 »

They had to do some repair to Patten's knee instead of just clean it out, that put him on IR.

This could be a boost for us. Teams will not have much film to prepare for with Jacobs could take come people off guard.

Hopefully this will spark some life into the WR. When Moss is shutdown we have no WR threat at all. It can't get any worse.

Wow, that sucks for Patten.

I am really excited about Parson being called up though! :D That dude is fast and he was awesome on his kick returns against Baltimore! I wonder if he will be returning kicks this week? That would sure help out with Betts' injury! Let's make it two weeks in a row with a TD kick off return! I love the enthusiasm he shows in the article!

I'm sad to see that Patten won't get another chance to improve his season. He seemed to play well with Brunell during the preseason. For a while, I thought that Brunell-Patten would be as deadly combination as Brunell-Moss. Get well, David.

Go, Taylor!! Time to make your mark!!!

Redskins WR Patten undergoes knee surgery, out for year
November 18, 2005
WASHINGTON (Ticker) - The Washington Redskins announced on Friday that wide receiver David Patten will miss the rest of the season after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery.

Patten was placed on injured reserve, leaving the Redskins with just three experienced receivers - Santana Moss, James Thrash and Taylor Jacobs.

"He (Patten) had been bothered by soreness for the last few weeks," Redskins coach Joe Gibbs said.

Patten, 31, started all nine games this season but had just 22 catches for 217 yards.

Moss is second in the NFL with 935 receiving yards on 53 catches. Steve Smith of Carolina leads the league with 937 receiving yards.

Thrash will likely replace Patten as the starter. He has just 13 catches for 153 yards this season.

Jacobs has been bothered by a toe injury and has only two catches for 33 yards.

The Redskins signed receiver Rich Parson from the practice squad to replace Patten on the roster.

Patten signed as a free agent with Washington in the offseason after spending the last four years with the New England Patriots. He had 44 receptions for 800 yards and seven touchdowns last season.

OK, that is shocking.

Well, I guess we'll find out how good Jacobs is...
