Gibbs to Send Game Tape to NFL
By Gary Fitzgerald
Redskins.com
November 14, 2005

Head coach Joe Gibbs said on Monday that he would send film into the NFL of the disputed two-point conversion play that was pivotal in Tampa Bay's 36-35 victory over the Redskins on Sunday at Raymond James Stadium.

After reviewing the film on Monday, Gibbs said that the footage showed fullback Mike Alstott's elbow was on the ground before he crossed the goal line. Referees and replay officials ruled otherwise.

"We have a very clear film shot of the ballcarrier on the ground about six inches short," Gibbs said. "It was the same thing everybody else saw. We'll turn it in. I don't know what else you can do."

The play was one of several controversial calls during Sunday's game.

Alstott's two-point conversion was preceded by an apparent block of a PAT, but Shawn Springs was called for off-sides on the play. It was Springs who had raced around the left end and blocked the kick. Walt Harris raced around the right end in similar fashion.

Joe Gibbs
Said Gibbs: "We actually felt like we blocked it. We looked at it about 30 times with [special teams coordinator] Danny Smith. We felt like the center picked the ball up a little bit and that we kind of got off right when he picked it up. That block could have won it for us. Again, we'll turn that one in."

Asked what typically happens when he turns in film to the league for review, Gibbs replied: "It's going to come back as, '[The refs] either missed it or [the refs] didn't.' That's what they're going to say. You try to help as best you can and you turn all of that stuff in.

"We're all trying to work together. You want to have as few errors as possible. The best way to do that is to cooperate and send all of this stuff in. And hopefully the next time, it won't happen to us, it'll happen to somebody else."

With the off-sides penalty called, the Bucs had the ball on the 1-yard line for the game-tying PAT. In a gutsy move, Tampa Bay head coach Jon Gruden decided to go for the two-point play. It worked and it proved to be the game-winning points.

On Monday, Gibbs was questioned about going for the block on the PAT.

"We had [a play] that we felt would work," he explained. "Blocking that could have been the play of the game. You take your shot. It's one of those things when it's over, you look back and say 'What if.' For me, I kind of like to go for it and be aggressive. But in this case, you could say that it bit us."

Gibbs has been a longtime supporter of the replay system. On Monday, he said he still supports it.

"If we didn't have it, I'd really be concerned," he said. "At least this way, if there's something that's obvious, you're going to get an overturn on it. I still feel good about the fact that we can review those things."

Whatever, sending the tapes in won't really do anything. Actually, I don't know if its a great idea to do that. Wouldn't that just piss off the refs and cause them to have a grudge over us?
I definitely agree that those calls were for the most part bogus but I don't know if sending in the tapes will actually help US in the long run.

This is not a "referee's" league it is a players league. They should be fired for their obvious bias against the Redskins.

Referees take pride in their work and want to do the best job possible. If there is something to be learned from the game film, the referees would want to see it, and won't hold that against the Redskins.

This is a PREFERABLE approach by the -TEAM- rather than only ripping them in fan boards like this one (which they deserve anyway).

They showed it on PTI. From the endzone camera it is obvious that Alstott's elbow was down way before the goal line. Brandon777 put this pic in another thread. It is a still image from that replay. In the pic you can't see the goalline but when the play is run from the beginning it's clear that he's well short.

The referees are utterly incompetent. How is it that on most replays a casual sports fan watching at home can see what's going on but the refs still blow replays every game? WHAT IS THE POINT OF REPLAY IF THEY STILL GET IT WRONG!?!?! Why did it take them two minutes to even decide to look at the replay? I think that they need bigger screens or whatever because they don't see even the most blatant things. Most of them should be fired.

It is pointless. Coach Gibbs is right but all this will do is lead to the NFL sending us ANOTHER letter of apology.

Just once I'd like to read about the NFL sending a letter apologizing to our opponent for blown calls the week after a game.

We sure as hell have one of those coming.

Hey guys, new to the Hogs.net but a die hard Skins fan since birth and even more so since puberty.

My only argument: WHAT IN THE WORLD IS THE POINT OF A REVIEW /INSTANT REPLAY SYSTEM IF BIG PLAYS THAT MATTER ARENT REVIEWABLE (galloway's long catch--out of bounds) AND EVEN AFTER REVIEWING AND SEEING THE OBVIOUS THE CALL GOES TO THE HOME TEAM????

the only possible reason i can see them giving the 2 point conversion to the Bucs is beacause of effort.

Also, I will pay good money for someone to kidnap Walt Harris saturday and hold him hostage for the rest of the season so i dont have to see his garbage ace on the field.[img][/img]

The refs covered their butts on the Galloway call. They claimed that he was forced out by the defender, which is not a reviewable call.

Only problem is that the official didn't signal it as a force out. Only after the play was to be reviewed did they decide it was indeed a force out. We were robbed by idiot referees.

i'm not so sure. i thought i saw the ref behind the play do the old 'get away from me' signal immediately after the catch. it was a horrible call, considering the fact that the defender was on the opposite side from him, so he had no way of determining if he pushed galloway, similar to how the ref who signaled 'touchdown' on the 2 point conversion was on the opposite side of the arm in which alstott was carrying the ball, meaning his view of the ball was theoretically blocked by the ball carrier.

Stop it! You are going to get another poster started with that.

Look guys, this is worth doing! They should be embarrassed -WITHIN- the rules. It is GOOD to get letters of apology from the NFL once they messed it up.

But to be EXTRA fair, sure the ref on the field MESSED UP big time in that last call because he should have held the call and talked to others because he did not see the ball cross the plane until one player had pulled Alstott and he had pushed further once down. BUT my anger is even BIGGER against the people at the BOOTH. They knew it. They saw it. They should have reversed it. They did noit have the guts and intelligence to do it.

PLEASE SEE and LISTEN to the press conference by Joe. The last call against us is only the BEGINNING of our complains to the League.

According to Joe, for example, we legitimately blocked that extra point!!! Man, I do not want to get angrier on Tuesday.

At least I have the faces of Philthy fans last night to brighten the rest of my week.

The NFL is the worst officiated sport in the world. When is the league gonna start doing something about it? Nothing more pisses me off than losing a game to ANOTHER BAD CALL.

Yes, I saw on Monday Night Countdown someone was saying that the 'Skins weren't offsides on the block because the long snapper moved before snapping the ball and the guys who blocked the kick were reacting to him.

Also, I didn't see the game but I TiVod it and saw all but the last five minutes because the game went on so long but on the radio they said there was another challenge at the end where a Tampa player "caught" a pass that had clearly hit the ground and wasn't overturned even after replay. What's that all about? What happened on that play?

A WR attempted to catch a pass for a 1st down and he did not have control of the ball when the ball hit the ground. He was able to secure it as he was falling.

It was reviewed and you can predict the answer: not enough indisputable evidence to overrule the call on the field. But -everybody- saw that he did not have control! Incredible.

Man, there were more horrible calls than I can or even want to remember.
