Moving to Northern VA...Any insights on where to live?

Post by DieselFan »

Quite possible I might be moving up that way...is there any reasonable neighborhoods w/houses under $400K (w/in a 45 minute drive of Reston Town Center?). Any ideas? Is there a community that's popping up or a town on the rise w/in a decent driving distance?

This would be months away, if at all...I just need to get my ducks in a row and see how much more I'll have to make just to afford a roof over my head ;-)

no

townhouse or condo maybe, but the majority of houses going up are over $400K. may know something I don't, but I work in Northern VA and commute well over an hour for more reasonable prices.

Try Arlington. There are some areas in Arlington that fit that criteria...have to make a drive though.

If not Arlington, you can try Bethesda Maryland....its quite a drive as well, but you can drive to the Metro and take metro to and from work....more time consuming but saves money in the long run.

There are some older neighborhoods in Reston, mainly townhouse communities, that might fit the bill.

45 MIN FROM RESTON! Man, I would think that gives you so many more options. Reston is far west enough to say you move even 20 min WEST or south of reston the homes should be less expensive than they are here in the immediate dc area. Check Loudon, ashburn, maaaaybe leesburg and surrounding areas if you can deal with living out there. It's a nice area too. Good luck.

All those areas are still very pricey. If you want to live in a shack, then you could find housing for around that price. In order to find nice homes for $400 thousand or less, you have to go across the mountain to Clarke or Frederick county. Loudoun county, incidently, is the #1 fastest growing county in the US. My 2 cents

i remember when we bought our house for like 150K...those were the smart investing days.

i think there are some townhouses that fit the bill in the prince william county area...centerville maybe. A friend has a house out there.

Like HOSS said, you'll probably need to look in Clarke (and maybe Frederick) county.

I didn't know there was a N. Virginia.
I guess Wheeling is out, though. :)

Try in Prince William county. Most houses in Manassas are in the low to mid 400's so you might be able to find one that needs to be "fixed up" a bit and depending upon traffic you can get to Reston in less than 30 minutes.

As for what others have said... near Reston you'd be looking for Townhouses in the price range
