Opinion: McCants traded for draft picks

Post by oafusp »

McCants had a great year last season and the NFL noticed.
Considering the WR stock pile we have (Coles, Gardner, McCants, Jacobs, Russell) the Skins could give McCants a medium size tender as bait.

This way the Skins could recover a 2nd round pick, and if nobody bites then McCants will at least get paid what he deserves this year!

Fact is, I have a good feeling the Skins will make some moves to regain the picks they have lost.
And I think they will do it in reverse to last years approach...they will deal their restricted free agents for draft picks (WR Darnerien McCants, S Ifeanyi Ohalete).

I'd like to keep McCants, I think hes a solid underrated third WR. I don't think any other teams think hes good enough for a 2nd rounder anyway, maybe a third at best.

Other teams probably wouldn't go for it, except maybe Philly- the only team I wouldn't want him to end up with.

McCants..yes but Ohalete definately NOT. This guy is extremely talented and it will be stupid to trade away a young talent like him unless they plan to draft Taylor.

No way. I respect your opinion but it will never happen. He will re-sign pretty soon. It would be stupid to give him away because he is a very valuable part of our offense. I know we need draft picks but trading Darnerien would be a huge mistake.

I think McCants would make a great #2 receiver somwhere. Now, if Derrius Thompson could get a big contract from Miami then I know McCants could. People in the NFL do know him, especially Marty Shot in San Diego (who needs WR's anyway and is the coach that drafted McCants).

The questions are:
1. Could Jacobs be ready to step up?
2. Would you rather have a #3 WR or a 2nd round draft pick (TE's Ben Troupe or Ben Watson).

Just a thought...I think Vinny should call Marty and try to get the Chargers 2nd round pick.
I could see the Chargers taking Fitzgerald, Mike or Roy Williams with their first then getting McCants to compete w/ Boston, and my money would be on McCants winning the job.

True, McCants loves DC, but he has no control over trades.
And as we have seen, Gibbs is "doing what is best for the Redskins"

Just a thought since I am bored talking about the other stuff..

I kind of think McCants is a fluke, yeah he got 6 TD's last year, but it's not likely to ever happen again.

Taylor Jacobs is a little faster and I think he's gonna win the #3 job anyway

Fluke? Wrong! I think he's a great clutch reciever when it comes to getting in the endzone or when where driving in the redzone. Not saying he's a #1 WR, but he's definetly a must on this team. I'd rather trade Gardner, where sure to get a 2nd rounder for him. Then we can have Coles, McCants, Taylor, Russell as our WR.

fluke...or whatever....his stock is as high as it is going to ever be with the Redskins.
He won't beat out Coles or Gardner, and Jacobs is right behind him.

Deal em` while they are hot (or luke warm).

Those 6 touchdowns were not a fluke my friend.

He has been used as a tight end since college. That's why he had 18 TD's his senior season with Deleware State and 6 last year. He is obviously a possession receiver who doesn't get a lot of yards. He was used properly last season and I know he'll re-sign and the best will be brought out of him by Gibbs.

Do you mean they were a fluke because he wasnt a big name so he got the ball more and now he's gonna have people gunning for him or because you think he's just not that good?

stats aside, the guy has great hands. he made some very nice catches in pressure situations last year. when joe mentioned that there would be some players who will start this year after sitting last year, he was the first one to come to my mind.

I think everyone's got rose colored classes when looking at McCants around here.

He's an okay 3rd or 4th reciever, but I think Taylor Jacobs is better.

McCants obviously has good hands, but I don't know that he's speedy or shifty enough to be a #2 wideout on a good team.

McCants is a big, physical receiver who can get open in the slot, like in long and goal situations, which is where he excelled last season. He worth keeping around just for third down situations alone, but has upward potential to be the #3 all the time.

Jacobs had 3 receptions for 37 yards all last year...How can you even say that he's better off of those stats...he hasn't even proved anything. I'm not saying Jacobs won't be good...but to suggest where looking through rose colored glasses after basing on those small stats .... well enough said

During his coverage of the games on radio, seems like Jurgey was always saying "good things happen when you throw to McCants". That's one vote of confidence I respect...

yeah it,s getting kind of old beating up on that same ole dead horse aint it.

my take on this is that i would go with keeping mccants but then again if the right deal came along i wouldn,t look the other way either.
but he will be resigned.

mccants is much better than jacobs (a soft player in college, overwhelmed in the pros), but no one would trade a 2nd rnd pick for him. I say trade gardner...oh yeah, oafusp did you say that mccants would beat out fitzgerald/williams/boston for a #1 or #2 job in sd???!!

c'mon now, that's just plain silly. he could, however, beat out gardner (a posession receiver who can't catch) for the # 2 here.

Gardner just pisses me off. He didn't make any big plays last season. I say trade him and give McCants his job as well. Then Jacobs can step up into the #3.

Get you eyes checked FootLong Piglet.

I think the Chargers should draft a top receiver and have a possesion receiver compete w/ Boston....and I think McCants would beat Boston...plus the fact that Marty personally drafted McCants.

I've got to agree with BringThePain! Taylor Jacobs should not be counted on for anything. I don't care what round he was drafted in, he was very dissapointing last season, while McCants was a very pleasntly suprising. Why again would Jacobs get the 3rd reciever job? Because he's faster?

Exhibit A: Desmond Howard

Putting recievers on the field simply because of their speed was so Steve Spurrier. McCants has a knack for the endzone. I'll take six points over a sweet 40 time anyday of the week (but escpecially on Sundays, being that's when we play the games and all...)

I believe McCants has proven his worth and has great hands and desire. He catches whatever is thrown his way. Jacobs is still unproven....besides McCants is the possession receiver Gardner should be, while Jacobs is the burner we have in Coles....do most of us agree on that?
God bless our troops and Joe Gibbs.

i did read it, I asked if you thought he'd beat out out Boston and one of those rookies for a starting job and you eloquently replied you thought he would.

Now that you have clarified, i suggest it is you who should get your entire cerbral cortex examined (along with various other parts of your nervous system) if you think that safe money is on Mccants beating out David Boston - you do know he had a 1600 yd season a couple of years ago not to mention the fact he gets paid a boatload. In fact, Boston is the #1 and whoever they draft would be the #2. That is unless Boston falls off a cliff in CA because his eyes need to be checked.

So whats the deal?

Trade McCants as a RESTRICTED free agent since he is a semi-hot commodity possesion receiver.

OR

Trade Rod Gardner since he had 1 bad season under Steve Spurriers system? Remember, Gardners rookie year was pretty good.

The fact is that we need to pull off some kind of trade to regain some picks...and WR is stocked for that. And Jacobs....well, all of the other NFL scouts had him ranked in the bottom of the first round...I think he will have alot to offer for a while, he will be our Ricky Sanders/Brandon Stokley/Az-Hakim/ 3rd receiver....i think?

Any other players on the Skins WORTH TRADING WHILE THEY ARE HOT in order to get some draft picks back???
burp.

Under Gibbs' system, there's room for two burners (Clark and Sanders, for instance). It's going to be interesting to see how Gibbs hashes out the receiver situation.
