Phillip Daniels has to go
Do ever hear his name called during a game ??? other then being hurt ??? have you looked and seen how many tackles he makes ?? how about a pass rush ?? what is he doing to earn a paycheck. I am sure we can find someone to fill in for him. Can't get much worse.

The d-line will certainly be addressed this year in the offseason, as will (I believe) TE and maybe even MLB. This defensive line isn't doing a terrible job--the lack of pass rush is apparent but remember that's also how Greg Williams set up the system. Williams gets consistent pressure on the QB from blitzes, not from the raw abilities of his linemen--who I believe are more concerned with stopping the run. A good pass rush from the D-line hasn't been crucial in the past 2 years for the Skins, and it's allowed the Redskins to focus on more pressing needs (such as DB's, quarterbacks, H-backs, and most of all WR's).
Other teams have been picking up our blitzes better this year so we see what we think is a weakness. It will be addressed this offseason but until then we certainly shouldn't dump our DE's. If we let some of our guys go, we won't find anyone better until March, and especially April. Depth is actually our biggest problem on the D-line right now. And good talent in this league can't be picked up off the streets for a few dollars. . .

Didm't we all say this last year? Don't forget that we'll also likely need a backup QB.

We said it but we misread the situation. Gibbs decided that he'd start taking care of the QB situation (something no one on this site forecasted as far as I remember), and surprised us by not looking for any WR talent in the draft. It was also a semi-surprise when we drafted big running backs in the later rounds instead of finding the best possible d-line talent. He also pressed hard to get a CB when many people thought a WR would be a far better choice, especially that early. Gibbs had a completely different game plan than everything we predicted.
I'm not saying that I'm terribly confident in my predictions for the offseason--especially at this point in the year--but last year we were all way off in how we perceived the team, I think. (Which just goes to show how far off I could be. . .but I feel compelled as a fan to make those semi-educated guesses and put them out there for everyone to hear

We may be looking for a backup QB in the draft but I'd think that would be in the later rounds. I think the TE situation will just be played by ear--this past season wasn't a great one to try and get a TE with the draft picks that we had, so we're sticking out another year with the oft-injured Royal. Our MLB draft class doesn't seem that great in retrospect--hopefully they will do something in the future--but I see potential for us to draft another one in the mid-to-late rounds.
Just my predictions, as of now I'm sticking by my original post in this thread.
niether Daniels or Wynn are going to scare anyone, but they are capable and play mistake free football. Also, either of them can switch to DT in a pinch. You aren't going to find anyone better off of the scrap heap. D-Line and Secondary are the biggest areas of need in terms of depth right now. The idea that you would let go a capable lineman because he doesn't make flashy plays is absurd. Do we need better ends? Yes? Are we going to find them in some guy whos currently working at Home Depot? No.

The only way the Campbell trade works out is if Campbell becomes a franchise quarterback. We gave up a 1st, and 3rd and 4th, if I'm not mistaken. Even if we win the Super Bowl and Denver gets the last pick in the first round, they're still ahead because of the other draft choices.
It's funny how everybody is clamoring for D-linemen for the draft. I remember how when I argued for drafting a rush end last year, everybody was saying we should take Mike Williams instead...

Or if Campbell turns out to be an All Pro..the deal works regardless.

Even though I was against the Campbell pick I disagree with you. You need to discount the value of a delayed pick. So getting a 1rst this year and giving up a 1rst next year, the pick next year is devalued in the scoring of the draft-trade system that every team now uses. So we'll have to at least end up with something like the 9th best record and pick 23rd next year for it to work out in our favor.
The only thing that pisses me off about the trade even if we do make it to the second round and make the pick worth less is that we got the Broncos pick in a weak draft and will be giving up our pick in a stronger draft.

I never wanted a WR. I wanted a pass rushing DE and qualioty OL depth.

Make that a perennial All-Pro and I'll agree with you. Many QB's have one or two good years and are so-so the rest of their career.
Even Gus Frerrotte was a Pro Bowler I do believe

I think it's safe to assume the draft-trade system that every team now uses accounts for changes in draft order from year to year. It's probably based on some kind of average otherwise how else could you judge value?

I was rooting for Shawn Merriman, but I can't argue with Carlos Rogers. We did need a young, talented CB also.
At least this offseason we accomplished rebuilding part of the team. We picked up a good center, and the playmaking wide receiver we sorely lacked last year. Maybe this offseason it's the defensive line's turn?
So was Trent Dilfer at one point....

Daniels and Reynaldo Wynn are really better suited to be backup players. I think that is the difference between our D-Ends and those of many other teams...we are starting guys who are second stringers at best.
Hayward, Pat Kerney, and John Abraham and are examples of "starting D-Ends in my book". They are not the , Strahan and Freeney quality Ends, but they actually are successful at getting to the quarterback.
Daniel's 9 sack season looks more and more like a fluke.
