Redskins Revamp Offensive Line
Plus Other News and Notes

According to GM Christopher Allen, the Redskins have made several moves to improve the offensive line.

The Redskins, looking to add youth and depth to the offensive line, released long snapper Ethan Albright.

The Redskins also made two trades with the Indianapolis Colts.

The first involved safety Matt Bowen, defensive end Renaldo Wynn, and a 2006 4th round pick being sent in exchange for offensive guard Jake Scott, defensive end Josh Thomas, and middle linebacker Gary Brackett.

The Redskins also sent recently signed veteran guard Dave Fiore, a 2004 2nd round, and another 2006 4th round pick to Indianapolis in exchange for up-and-coming defensive end Robert Mathis. The 24-year old Mathis only has one year remaining on his contract, making him a free agent at the end of the season.

The Redskins also signed former Indianapolis Colts safety Cory Bird to a 1-year deal worth $710,000 with a $160,000 signing bonus.

According to Assistant Head Coach – Defense Gregg Williams, the team will be implementing the 3-4 defense for the rest of the 2005 season.

Expect reports on the last preseaon games and other loose ends. While waiting for that enjoy this evaluation of the NFC East.

Time for our run-through of the NFC East Division and your 2005-2006 Washington Redskins!

Philadelphia Eagles

Image

OFFENSE:
The Eagles offense seems to be very potent once again this season. At quarterback is the always dangerous Donavan McNabb. The receivers for Philly include Terrell Owens and rookie, Reggie Brown. Ownes will be one of the best in the league as usual and Brown will likely play an important role quickly. Philly's starting halfback is Brian Westbrook. The all-purpose runner is a play-maker that can really break a game wide open. His game is multi-faceted and he is a great reciever. At tight end the Eagles will be lining up L.J. Smith. Smith appears to be ready to play a more expanded role this season. He figures to catch more passes. The Eagles offensive line is strong. With players like Jon Runyan they appear to be very capable of protecting McNabb and the running game.

DEFENSE:
The Eagles defensive line is good. It has superb speed rusher, Jevon
'The Freak' Kearse lined up on the left side. He figures to once again be a force on the line. The Eagles linebacker corps is fast and strong. Jeremiah Trotter, Keith Adams, Mark Simoneau, Dhani Jones and Jason Short will all be great on defense. At the cornerback position Philly is good. Lito Sheppard and Sheldon Brown proved themselves last year, and will only get better. At Free Safety Philly has Brian Dawkins who is always prepared to deliver a big hit or make a big play.

SPECIAL TEAMS:
Kicker, David Akers will be the Eagles best player on special teams.

Image

New York Giants:

Image

OFFENSE:
At quarterback the Giants have second year man Eli Manning. He is taking big strides towards being a star in this league. However, don't expect that to happen this year. At halfback the Giants have Tiki Barber, Barber's fumbling woes lessened last season, but that is still a problem. The Giants backup halfback is rookie Brandon Jacobs, he is a huge goal-line threat. New York's tight end is Jeremy Shockey. Shockey is a physical tight end who will most likely be the leading pass reciever on the team. The Giants recievers include Amani Toomer and their big free agent signing, Plaxico Burress. Burress will be the team's number one pass reciever. He has a large wingspan and thus, is a great target in traffic and the back of the endzone. Last year New York's offensive line improved. However, they are still weak.

DEFENSE:
The Giants defensive line is good. One of their defensive tackles is William Joseph. He should be a great player. At left end the Giants have Michael Strahan. You can count on him to get 7+ sacks year in and year out. At right end New York has Osi Umenyiora. Umenyiora is an up and comer in the league and had a team-leading 7 sacks last season. The Giants picked up former Washington Redskin, Antonio Pierce to play middle linebacker. He should be a force for that improving defense. At cornerback New York has two great players, William Peterson and Will Allen. Besides that, the Giants do not have great depth at cornerback. At strong safety the Giants have Gibril Wilson. Wilson is another great young player.

SPECIAL TEAMS:
Last year the Giants had the best special teams in terms of field position after a kickoff or punt. Their punter and Kicker are Jeff Feagles and Jay Feely.

Image

If Eli Manning develops quickly this season the Giants will have a good year

Dallas Cowboys

Image

OFFENSE:
The Cowboys quarterback is a familiar face, Drew Bledsoe. After their quarterback troubles last season the Boys' hope that Bledsoe will last the whole year. Their starting halfback is 2nd year man, Julius Jones. In Jones limited time last season he showed great promise. At wide receiver the Boys' have Keyshawn Johnson, Peerless Price, Terry Glenn and Patrick Crayton. These receivers are not great, but should get the job done. The Cowboy's tight end, Jason Witten is a great receiver as well. The Cowboys' offensive line is great with big veterans Larry Allen and Flozell Adams. They also picked up guard Marco Rivera to improve their already great line.

DEFENSE:
The Cowboys are great up the middle with defensive tackles, La'Roi Glover and Jason Ferguson. They have a great right end in Greg Ellis. Dallas also has good linebackers like, Scott Fujita and Dat Nguyen. Dallas improved their cornerbacks alot over the off-season. At corner Dallas has Aaron Glenn, Anthony Henry and Terrence Newman. Dallas has one of the best safeties in the league in Roy Williams. Their defense looks to be great this season.

SPECIAL TEAMS:
The Cowboys have a terrible kicker in Jose Cortez and a terrible punter in Mat McBriar.

Image

If Julius Jones plays as well as he did last season when he was not injured Dallas is in store for a great season.

Washington Redskins
Image

OFFENSE:
The redskins have a 2-way QB controversy at the moment between incumbent starter, Patrick Ramsey and rookie, Jason Campbell. The Redskins have one of the best halfbacks in the league, Clinton Portis. He should lead the offense this season. The recent acquisition of Brandon Jacobs has already proved its worth during the offseason. Why spelling Portis he is more than able to carry the offense on his shoulders. Washington did not have a wide receiver over six feet tall until picking up Koren Robinson via F/A. He should prove a viable WR for whoever is at center. All of the WR's are extremely fast. During the off-season Washington acquired Santana Moss. He will be the number one receiver this year. Number two will be David Patten. The former Patriot will play a bigger role this season then in years past. Tight End Chris Cooley emerged last season as a great player. He should be even better this year. The Washington offensive line is healthy this season and anchored by veteran Jon Jansen.

DEFENSE:
The Redskins' defensive line is anchored by defensive tackle Cornelius Griffin and defensive end, Phillip Daniels. In the past week the Skins have signed two 2nd year players who show tremendous amounts of talent at the DE spot. These guys are here for the long haul and will be adequate replacements to an aging D line. The Redskins also have an incredible linebacker corps with, Lavaar Arrington, Warrick Holdman, Marcus Washington, Gary Brackett and Lemar Marshall. They probably have the best depth in the league at the linebacker position. At cornerback Washington has Shawn Springs, Walt Harris and rookie, Carlos Rogers. Their corners are good. They also have great depth at safety with Sean Taylor, Pierson Prioleau, Omar Stoutmire and Ryan Clark. They should have a capable defense.

SPECIAL TEAMS:
The Redskins have a great kicker, John Hall and a great Punter Tom Tupa. Tupa will probably retire following this season, and have another punter on the roster, Andy Groom.

Projected Finishes:
Philadelphia Eagles 12-4
New York Giants 7-9
Washington Redskins 7-9
Dallas Cowboys 7-9

Quick Ravens recap

New arrivals show up on defense. Clark, Springs, Pierson and Bird showed up against the Ravens to amass 4 INTs.

Redskins leader Clinton Portis 76 yards on 12 attempts with a 6.3 YPC. Rookie RB Brandon Jacobs had a 5.5 YPC on 16 attempts for a grand total of 88 yards.

Redskin QB's really were the downside of the team by throwing 4 ints. Portis will definately need to be the mainshow to alleviate the pressure off of starting QB Patrick.

The season is beggining, expect more in depth coverage of games, the team and the league during the regular season.

Preseason is over

GM Allen:

It may be hard to pick out the progression in overall stats for our players but where they have improved is where it counts most. I can say that 90% of our players have improved in their gameday awareness and that will pay dividends on the fields. The following players improved in their overall ratings:

Brandon Jacobs +1 - HB
Derrick Docery +2 - LG
Cory Raymer +1 - C
Jake Scott +2 - RG
Josh Warner +2 – RG
Chris Clemons +1 - LOLB
Lemar Marshall +1 - MLB
Gary Brackett +3 - MLB
Robert McCune +4 - MLB
Chris Bird +2 – SS
John Hall +2 – K

As you can see from this list that a lot of off season acquisitions have SIGNIFICANTLY improved even in their short tenure thus far. We have a surplus of talented up and coming LB’s who will fuel this defense.

Here are a few questions for GM Allen

What formations are the coaches planning on running primarily this season?

How long will the coaching staff keep Ramsey in if he continues to make mistakes in the offense?

While it is understood that the linebackers are one of the deepest in the league, What do the coaches expect to gain by switching to a 3-4 defense?

(What difficulty are you playing on?)

GM: I know that we'll be using a lot of 2 TE single back formations. The opposing teams tend to have a knack for knowing your plays so this formation will keep them honest. The fact that there isn't one definate strong side we can audible a run to the opposite side away from the blitz without tipping off the D.

How long will the coaching staff keep Ramsey in if he continues to make mistakes in the offense?

GM: Ramsey has been solid this offseason. We've been working on the deep ball and thats why his INT ratio has been a little high. He'll settle down. Portis and Jacobs will carry the load.

While it is understood that the linebackers are one of the deepest in the league, What do the coaches expect to gain by switching to a 3-4 defense?

GM: We decided to run with the 3-4 to cater to what you pointed out, our LB core is deep. I may have worded my answer incorrectly in a previous statement. We are not soley running a 3-4, we're running a balanced D that included the 3-4, 4-3, 46, nickel, dime and quarter. Our D is very flexible and being limited to one style would be a hinderance. We have guys in the wings that come off the bench for different situations. This also allows us to confuse the offense and not give them a chance to catch on to what we're doing.

(What difficulty are you playing on?)

All-Madden baby! Its the only way to play.

* the opinions in this post do not reflect those of the Redskins franchise.

Unrealistic? Its not like I traded for Vick, everyone I acquired are young players. I didn't pick up one superstar plus I had to include picks in my trades. I believe I kept all my trades with reason and there is no way any of us can accurately judge whether my trades are 100% or not. If we keep it really accurate I'd be losing players and not be able to sign anyone for a long time.

However, your opinion is valid and its exactly what I wanted this thread to provoke. I want you guys to get pissed about stuff that the GM does, this thread afterall a mock of this forum. I spoke to GM Allen and he had this to say:

"We make trades to think further down the road. Show me a rule where its illegal to improve the team. Show me where I have cheated and made a sure fire acquisition. Any of the players we acquired can be a bust. I think that can be seen by the lack of pressure we still have yet to attain with our front four. This is why Im the GM and the fans are just what they are."

* For future reference, all questions are to be directed towards GM Allen.

OFFICIAL REDSKINS PRESS RELEASE!

In the Skins debut against the Chicago Bears there was plenty good to be served up with a side of bad.

The game starts in the trenches and QB Patrick Ramsey was sacked only one time. Patrick was making the reads and using the time that the line gave him to his benefit. Regardless if he started off slowly or not he showed veteran poise and did not get down on himself. After the half he got his team under control and with even play calling was able to keep the lead and extend it even further. RB Clinton Portis definitely showed that he was a good choice for team captain by rushing for 91 yards on 25 attempts and even broke one for 22 yards. His stellar stats are attributed to the acquisition in Brandon Jacobs. Jacobs called by Coach Gibbs as the perfect compliment to Portis ran for 17 yards on 5 carries and 1 TD. Mind you, this is just the 1st game and this team has not found its legs yet. I cant quite move on to the defense without mentioning the player of the game. Santana Moss recorded 7 receptions for 175 yards and two TDs. Christmas came early boys Santana Clause delivers via FedEX! Chris Cooley recorded his 1st TD of the season and was a reliable target as was new comer Koren Robinson whos height is of great importance to this team.

Pierson, Springs and new comer C. Bird each had one TD in the Skins debut game. None has much of a return on their INTs but each just built onto the momentum that will carry this team into hostile territory next week. This momentum will definitely need to make it to next week so that it can carry on throughout the week in practice. The usually stable defense looked shaky at times and rookie CB Rogers got picked on early and often. The defense uncharacteristically missed plenty of tackles, which equaled to big gains by the offense. Coach Williams stated that computer love is not an excuse and that this defense must overcome unfair advantages given to the opponent and take these games seriously. With one sack LB Lemar Marshall also had one sack on the day.

Stay tuned for more information throughout the week.[/color]

4th down conversion: 50% - 100%

GM Allen What were the coaches explenations for the above stats, mainly 195 yds rushing?

Overall we were very pleased with the defenses performance. They had one big run in the their possession after the half. Sean Taylor went for a big hit and whiffed the runner. At that point he was the last line of defense since we were in a 46 bear defense. Sean will definately have to be more aware of his surroundings and where his teammates are and their ability to make a play if he is not able to. Tackling is something that we had some issues with in the 1st game and its mainly been one big run here and one big run there.

This will be addressed through practice and experience that can only come through game situations. We have new players in key positions on defense.

Since there are new players in key positions don't the coaches think it would be wise to run a simple defense(4-3,nickel,dime)until everyone gets acclimated to thier new environments and teammates?

If you have Ramsey still and on the bench you should be able to get a high 1st rounder for him, I got Round 1 from the Dolphins for Ramsey, turned out to be 11th overall, and Reggie Bush, put him in as a slot reciever and in certain d's the linebacker doesn't have a chance.

Redskins Release wrote:Bottom of the barrel definitely describes the Cowboys season going into the 2nd week; they’re the worst team in the East.

This game was one full of undisciplined play by the Skins who had chances to blow the Boys out but couldn’t do it. The 1st Skins drive was marred by Patrick who needed some time to shake the rust off. Overthrown passes to Cooley and Moss resulted in a 3 an out. As usual Tom Tupa was on his game punted the ball within their 10 yard line. The Redskins D definitely held up and special teams forced a shanked punt to give the ball back to the offense. The offense finally finding somewhat of a groove got Portis moving the ball effectively and worked the play action play to Cooley perfectly for a TD.

On the 3rd possession Cooley shows that he’s a worthy 3rd down target and keeps the drive alive. Blown coverage, roughing the passer and poor run D by the cowboys defense lead to another TD. Although not through the air Portis was on the receiving end of a rainbow from Patrick Ramsey in the corner of the end zone.

Defense was the story of the day as the Skins continuously stopped the Pukes offense and got the ball back once again. However James Thrash dropped a key 3rd down play to end the drive. The Skins will definitely look to improve their WR corps in the off-season.

Big plays have been the bane of this defense. They will hold an offense to 0 yards and give up an 81 yard run. That’s what happened to JJ as he ran over the skins after receiving the ball at the half. The Skins offense still clicking for the most part answered back with a TD of their own. However there were tons of dropped passes which put the team in uncomfortable 3rd and longs.

After the 81 yard run the defense amped up their intensity but the statue was made of solid concrete. Bledsoe was repeatedly run down and over but always got the ball off and completed the pass to open WR’s. The Skins defense needs to step up. Their new DE Mathis has yet to record a sack, coach Williams will attempt to fix this situation soon.

The most intense part of the game happened in the 4th quarter when Nyugen tried to kill T. Jacobs and forced a fumble. Elated Dallas fans hopped out of their seats in anticipation of some type of miracle comeback. Those dreams were erased by none other than Lavar Arrington who devastated Julius Jones with a hit so ferocious that he had no choice but to let go of the ball which was recovered by Marcus Washington and sealed the games fate.

After 2 weeks the Skins are the #2 team overall in the NFL. We’re #1 in total offense leading the NFL in passing yards, running yards and points. The defensive sides of things are a different story. The Skins should be #1 and the difference is the big plays that they’ve allowed thus far in the season. By the way, the Texans are #1…in defense.

GM Allen: We need to keep this defense as flexible as possible. There are some opposing offenses out there and they tend to be able to know exactly what you're going to do. Its good to be able to run different schemes throughout the game to keep the off balance.

GM Allen: We've already traded Brunell, Patrick is a potentially great QB and we need depth.

I did my franchise with the redskins. All madden level, 10 minute quarters with accelerated clock and the funny thing was Campbell won the starting job after preseason. But i went with ramsey all year.

Portis had a solid year finish 3rd in the mvp running. about 1500 yards and like 18 TD's.

Ramsey on the other hand i had a problem. I had 17 TD passes and 36 INTS. All madden level was tough.

I won the divison at 10-6. Won my opening playoff game against the Seahawks. But got KILLED the next game against the Rams.

I had trouble in the offseason didn't sign the right people. Tried to use campbell traded ramsey but campbell was so horrible i got killed the first 3 games.

I'm going to start a new one but I like reading about yours. Nice topic

GM Allen: Possible Cancellation.

With the Xbox360 releasing next week Im afraid Im going to have to cancel this season. I hate to do it but I can't play Madden on the 360 and PS2 at the same time and still have time for my girl friend. Depending on how many people reply to this very post I may start on the 360. If I start it on the 360 I may even keep the roster 100% accurate. So please reply to this and let me know how you guys feel. I have a lot of potential responsibilities coming up so nothing is a guarantee. I wish i could have been more consistent but doing this was a huge task.
