It would be really interesting to see if Arringotn could make a difference. Reading the stories over the past few days seem to indicate that Arrington will not play. It sure looks like the lines have been drawn and both are not willing to compromise. It also looks like Pierce is being missed more that Williams thought. The defense is not as good as last year.

But it seems to me that the Redskins real weakness is the offense. More mistakes today that probaby costs the win. Three fumbles, 2 by Brunell and 1 by Cartright. When does Gibbs get enough of Brunell and his miscues. And I am not starting a bring Ramsey back thread either.

To answer my own question, probably never, Gibbs will not listen to the Lavar, Lavar, Lavar chant any more than he will admit that the offense is loosing the games.

So far, the most exciting thing about the Redskins is Santana Moss.

we need help on defense and offensive line

Post by darkwing99 »

Look marshall is a backup middle linebacker at best, he doesnt blow up runs and is decent in pass coverage, Holdman should not be a starter on anybody's team. As people must have noted majority of the runs we have had against us have come towards his side. He gets owned on a lot of plays. We need Lavar and we need turnovers for our defense. Until this happens, we will never beat good teams in this NFL without a game changing playmaker on defense. We might have a chance against mediocre teams because we are mediocre in our own right. Our O-line sucks plain and simple, letting an average DE in Jarred Allen run around both Samuels and Jansen to get 3 sacks and 2 fumbles forced and recovered. We have no pass rush on defense and mediocre linebackers except for Washington and dont get me started on our CB depth because Ade Jimoh sucks.
Well I guess all I am trying to say is that, we need to get some pass rushers either in the draft or free agency, a good and smart linebacker( somebody say Lemar Marshall is smart with his play and I will kick them in the nuts :lowblow: literally). We also need one extremely competent nickel CB who can be a starter. Please feel free to chime in on my ranting. Maybe I have lost my mind.

Our defense is GREAT. Do not start pointing fingers because we lost. Lavar will be there when the coaches feel that he truly gives us the best chance to win and not a second before that time. I am as disappointed as any of you, Skins fans, but I trust the defensive scheme as a whole.

Most of the crucial scores came in against us as a results of mistakes on offense.

If I was Rock Cartwright, I would be worrying about my job just about the next time I make another little game-changing momentum-swinging mistake.

Perhaps the most important story was the oldest story in football. Their DL won the battle more often than not against our OL. That guy J. Allen killed us yesterday.

Nope our defense is GOOD, it wil be GREAT when we have capable players playing in the system. We will be GREAT when we have at least one good pass rushing DE, and a decent linebacker opposite Wahington, because it is becoming painfully apparent that Holdman is not the answer, a backup at best not a starter. Sean Taylor is good for now, Carlos Rogers is holding up surprisingly well against the run and pass coverage. But it is not great, choose your words wisely.

The Skins D is one of the best in the NFL. Turnovers cost us the game... again. We outplayed the Chefs, lost opportunities and proved we can play with any team, any wear. I'm not happy we lost, but encouraged that our team does not quit. Sure we can get better in a lot of areas - but we're getting there.

Our defense has not been playing GREAT lately... actually in the last 10 quarters, the offense has pretty much played better than the defense... If you look at the top 10 drives the defense has given up the last 10 quarters to the top 10 drives they gaave up in the first 5 complete games last year you'll find...

last 10 quarters... 5 drives given up over 70 yards
first 5 games 2004... 5 drives given up over 70 yards

top 10 drives, last 10 quarters...gave up 7 TDs, 2 FGs, 1 MFG
top 10 drives, first 5 gms '04...gave up 6 TDs, 3FGs, 1 Downs

... and 3 of those drives over 70 yards last year were the Dallas penalty-aided drives...

if you compare the big plays given up this year so far it doesn't even compare to last year...

my point is, we're struggling defensively at a time when the offense is way better than it was last year, so maybe it'll light a fire on the field if we add a new wrinkle like Lavar...

After the defense's performance last week against the Chiefs, I hope to see Lavar play a lot against the 49ers. After all, couldn't "hoit" I think.

Amen! We have a great team and the Chief's were able to capitalize on crucial mistakes. We have the #5 defense in the league for crying out loud! Additionally, we've crushed our previous two opponents on both offensive production and time of posession. The last two games have been lost on turnovers. Period. Anyone that says otherwise ain't paying attention.

Yes we are ranked 5th overall in defense but that is largely due to our pass defense which is 3rd overall. In terms of rushing defense we are ranked 15th in the league as we are now giving up over 100 rushing yards per game. In no way is that "great".

...Right. That would be because we let Tatum Bell rip us for two big plays. Stats are misleading in this case. How many other 100 yard rushers had we let in 8 games before that -- zero. How about yesterday? Well, that's another one to add. Our rushing defense could be bolstered, that's for sure. That doesn't change that we have a killer defense. Now if only they could create some turnovers...

It doesn't matter how we give up the yards. The fact is that we have been giving up big plays in the run game for the past 3 weeks. Sure we faced some of the better running teams in the league but that is when a great defense is supposed to step up.

Alot of wishful thinking here!

Post by nuskins »

Anyone who says our defense is GREAT has lost the picture. Our defense has never been GREAT and has a long way to go before we can say that. Losing close games is not a sign of a GREAT defense, allowing big rushing plays like we have is not a sign of a GREAT defense, having 2 turnovers in 5 games is not the sign of a GREAT defense, having NO pass rush is not a sign of a GREAT defense.

GET REAL! I am a fan but not a blind one....this defense is slipping fast and needs to be shored up quick if we want a winning season. Have you looked at our schedule? Have you noticed the division we play in? This could turn ugly real quick if we don't address some of the above issues NOW!

bottom line is our defense has forced a LEAGUE WORST 2 takeaways.

We have committed a comprable number of turnovers to other teams, however, the majority of the league has forced double digit turnovers as a team, while we are stuck on 2.

Turnovers by the offense are only one half of the ratio. The other half is equally important and you can tell in Gibb's comments that he is getting impatient with our lack of forcing any takeaways.

Three fumbles is inexcusable (especially 1 for a TD) but if you look at the numbers, in the grand scheme of things, the lack of getting takeaways is by far the most glaring problem for us.

Just look how many teams that are on the + side of the ratio who have given it away at comprable rates, but are taking the ball away as well.

We have to get some interceptions, and fumbles or else our offense will be working with the thinest of margins.

We've lost two games!! The sky is falling, the sky is falling!! We've lost two games!!

Hate to hear your thoughts on the Patriots -- they've lost three. Guess the season's over for them, huh?

The sky is not falling, I am just making a point that this is not a GREAT defense YET and anyone who believes it is not looking at the big picture. Stats are one thing, playing the kinds of games we have been in is another. Our Offense has been bailing the defense out this year, especially in the last 4 games.

My point is that we play in the toughest NFC division ( maybe NFC South makes a case) and we cannot get by on what we have been doing defensively for the rest of the year. We are last in the league in turnovers and pretty much near last in sacks. We give up big rushing plays, consistently in the last 3 weeks, and cannot hope to be a playoff team if things don't change on defense.
No the sky is not falling....just our Defense.

The defense is finally getting exposed for big plays, because lack of a pass rush. If you watch the game everytime we blitz up the middle or around the edge its picked up like somebody was in our huddle. Most of the big plays that happen on us are on the edge on phillip daniels and Holdman side. Sean Taylor is not able to create as much as he should cause he is usually locked up one on one with WR. Instead of roaming the middle waiting to kill somebody.GW had to put or d in zone schemes to protect the corners because of the weak pass rush that ends create. He said that Wynn, and daniesl are good football players, I doubt they would start anywhere else.

Yeah it was pretty sad when Daniels missed Tatum Bell last week, and followed that up with a weak attempt to sack Trent Green. C'mon he is 6 foot 5 and almost 300 pds, and Trent Green shook him off like he was Dunta Robinson or something....summon the spirits of Charles Mann or the Pre-Crack Dexter Manley...can Bruce Smith still play?
