Officiating! Is it just me?

Post by soco18 »

.......or is the officiating throughout the league the worst it's ever been?I have never seen so many bad or no calls in my life, and I'm not even talking about our game against Denver.I don't even know where to start.Hell, even Madden in last nights game couldn't believe how bad that game was being called. They were even throwing flags when there wasn't a penalty! They seem to even be screwing up most of the replay calls.I sure wish they would pay these guys to be year round refs and learn the game inside and out before they are allowed to officiate a game. It's not like the NFL doesn't make enough money off us fans  .Thanks for letting me rant.

I think all of your points are valid and the league will have to look in to some of these issues. Especially, some of the things that went on in the Ravens game and the Buccaneers game.

How many of you saw the Ravens game?

Unbelievable how many calls they gave to the Lions. I was floored by the calls going Detroit's way. And I was rooting for the Lions! I dont like the Ravens or their fans at all. I just couldn't believe that game. It was ridiculous.

when do they challenge a safety?

That was a safety without a doubt...What's going on? is there some $$ under the table or sumthing?

How do you go from 2 penalties against the Seahawks to 10 against Denver?
It must be the officiating crews themselves... some are flag happy - others (like the Seattle game crew) seem to be content to let them play and only make calls when completly flagrant.
The ref's do have it in for the Skins, though. Its pretty obvious, even to non-skins fans.

He threw the ball backwards without being hit. That's a backwards lateral and a safety, no two ways about it!

The NFL is by far the worst officiated sport in the world. They really need to do something about this bad officiating. They can start by checking the ref's bank accounts after they blow a few calls. Then they can make them full time employees and if thats not enough they should fine them for making bad calls. Lets say every five bad calls they have to pay $50,000. I understand they're human I understand they will miss some here and there so we should give them a few calls each year, but once they hit five they should pay up. These bad calls after bad calls are taking the fun out of the game.

60 year old men who can't see running around at full speed with 20+ year old 300 pound men, makes sense to me. I agree the officiating has gotten horrible. I think the league has some refs so long that they grow to like them and don't want to get rid of them when they are incapable of doing the job properly.

They need to pay these refs a good salary and make them full-time.

I believe they need to review all bad calls and give the refs an alloted amount of "free passes". That would not be a very high number but something reasonable since no one is perfect. Once a ref starts exceeding that quota then they need to start hitting them in the pockets.

Its beyond me how this league makes so much money but won't invest any of that into makes these refs better. They'll make their job harder but introducing new rules though!

You dont watch much NBA do you? But seriously the calls have been worse this year than i remember. especially the reversal of that safty. I mean the is the dumbest rule ever. Plummer had NO intention of throwing the ball, and the refs let the play go all the way to the safty. Absurd reversal IMO.

The tuck rule is one of the dumbest rules ever created. As for the rest of our game, it was a matter of viagra-fiends wanting to be on TV.

I honestly think all refs are from Texas and grew up Puke fans.

my way of looking at the refs as a group is that they have alot of work to do.get some control like the earlier posts especially in the bucs game and ravens game.now for our game on sunday boy they looked confused as to what was going on and what call to make.

all in all they have a long ways to go and hopefully the nfl will take a hard long look into it as well.

I hate to say it (especially on this board) but the tuck rule was called correctly against us Sunday. Not that I liked it, but I think the refs called it per the rule. It is one of the dumbest rules around though. Plummer had pulled the ball in and lost control of it way after the pump...oh well...

Didn't the tuck rule help the Pats either get into the SB or win it a few years back? I vaguely remember something about it...

No it wasn't in that it was backwards and should have been ruled a lateral, and therefore a safety.

I agree, maybe not that high of a fine but regardless they should be fined. There is no excuse for the terrible officiating when they have officials watching every play up in the booth and can review it in slow motion, if a bad call was made on the field then the booth should over turn it.

The "tuck rule" was never intended to protect the fake pump, which is what I thought I was looking at when it happened.
Sadly, it was the difference in the game. I also really didn't see any interference from Patten. You call that one hand (not even a whole hand) interference ?
Give me a break. I'm telling you...football is slowly being made a non-contact sport. The way I see it, we have twelve points taken off the scoreboard...nine of those should not have been.
Has anybody else noticed that more field judges and refs are being run over and injured by being in the middle of a developing play this year ?
If a man lacks the common sense to get his butt out of the path of 500 pounds of opposing force coming right at him, what makes anybody think that this is the guy you want making calls on the field ?

There is a one line of thought that says if you run over enough of them they'll start letting the players hit each other again.

there is absolutely no excuse for not having refs be a "full-time" position. think about how many millions of dollars are invested into each NFL game to ensure a high quality product, a great level of competetion. and then, some schmuck who is paid a grand or two hops on a plane after his day job and absolutely ruins the entire game, nullifying any "meaning" or validity the outcome has. what kind of sense does that make?

please, NFL, protect your multi-million dollar investment! fork out a few thousand extra bucks and hire NFL officials as full-time, year-round employees! make them undergo RIGOROUS offseason training (and eye exams- HA). set up a system of ACCOUNTABILITY. but first and foremost, please abide by common sense and...

MAKE PENALTIES REVIEWABLE/CHALLENGABLE!!!!

a penalty is a judgement call just like ANY AND EVERY other call an official makes on the field. there is no conceivable reason why it should be magically excluded from what is reviewable. both to overturn false penalties, and assign additional penalties that weren't called on the field but SHOULD have been assessed (such as the non-call on the illegal block in the back that gave Tatum Bell his 2nd "TD" at denver).

I disagree and I do watch the NBA. At least with the NBA refs, I know certain things going in: Traveling is virtually impossible; the charge rule does not apply to Shaq; Bruce Bowen can grab your jersey and hit you and undercut you when you take jumpshots; don't even breathe on Tim Duncan (I hate the Spurs) ... but the NFL has SEVEN officials on the field plus the benefit of instant replay and they STILL suck at it.

Unless you count the fact that both runs should have benn called back! On the 34 yarder one of the Skins was tackeled five yards down feild and on the 55 yarder M.washington and another player (BOTH IN THE RUNNING LANE) were blocked in the back. Washington was engaged with another player when he was hit, but they both were outside of the tackles making a block in the back illeagle.

Yes, we had plenty of chance to win and should have, but in a close game, the refs deffinately can swing you wins or loses!
