We lucked out w/ our cornerback pick

Post by Great Natale »

Our ninth pick in the last draft seemed to be earmarked for the cornerback position. With Rolles season-ending injury and PacMan's recent troubles of being booed.

Wow could we have really ended up with one of these two?

Carlos is doing a great job against the run, but I think he peaks in the backfield too much, I want him to face a more physical recevier like Terrel Owens, are Burress. These guys will test him deep and thats where he needs to get better at.

I would have been happy with either Rolle or Rogers. I think that both will eventually become Pro Bowl caliber players. Jones, on the other hand, looks like a head case. Really glad that we didn't draft him.

I agree -- luck had little to do with it. Gibbs didn't win 3 Superbowls without having a pretty good eye for talent. At this rate, I'm curious to see how Campbell pans out for us...eventually. After MB makes the pro-bowl!
"The biggest misrepresentation there is that [it's because] Dan's got a lot of money. That's not it," Gibbs said. "We've got a rule. Believe me, if we had no rules, Dan would spend some money."

Was it luck?

That is what scouts are for.

While it would have taken a crystal ball to foresee Rolle's injury... shying away from Pac Man because of his off-field tendencies would seem to be something much more tangible.

Pac Man was also the recipient of what I like to refer to as the Kiper Quotient... someone who shot WAY too far up the draft board AFTER all of the football was done being played.

So maybe it was just good scouting that landed us Rogers...

My 2 cents
Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.

And Taylor....

The only luck we; had has been bad.

These selections were/are part of the start of the rebuilding while winning philosophy that Gibbs and Co. are bring to the team. The beginning was identifying team players.

Yes BossHog is right, I don't think it was luck.

"Luck" sounds as if we just randomly picked him and now he is doing well.

And actually, I heard that had Rolle and Jones been on the board at #9, the coaches still would have taken Rogers.

Obviously the scouts and coaches knew what they were doing, or they probably would have taken Mike Williams

I say its luck b/c Rogers could have been picked by the Cards or the Titans. Yes we wanted Rogers but wouldn't we have taken PacMan if Rogers was gone? So we lucked out b/c noone else took Rogers.

This team has a pretty solid history as far as the secondary unit is concerned.

For example...Darrel Green, Champ Bailey, Fred Smoot, Sean Taylor and hopefully Carlos Rogers. I know what you mean when you say we "lucked" out but I also agree with the rest that this draft and last years draft is due to the coaching staff more than just luck.

Our "luck" part has some so far in the relative lack of injuries. Our future luck will come hopefully with Taylor's charges getting dismissed.

With KW2, Gibbs had the choice. If Jones or Rolle were available he may have took 1 of them, but I'm glad it worked out the way that it did!

I'm one of the toughest guys on the site on Gibbs, whom I think has really made some bad moves, but I would never agree that the selection of Carlos was luck. The guy is a great choice, brilliantly made, and an upgrade of Smoot. Neither Rolle and Pac Man will be great, Caroles will be.

While I'm a Gibbs supporter to the end, I sure can't say it was skill that we got Rogers over the other two -- they were gone when we picked. It's skill that we took Rogers over Mike Williams (who a lot of you folks wanted).

But in the end, who cares? We got Rogers and he'll be a very good player one day, as will Taylor - assuming he doesn't go to jail.

I agree but for now I like Walt Harris over Carlos.

Walt is injuried and 9 times out of 10 won't play again this week

rogers= CB drafted by the redskins

What are you talking about?
I am seriously confused. Are you saying we should have drafted Rodgers with the 9th pick?

He's simply stating that people are spelling his name incorrectly.

ROTFALMAO Grammer nazi's don't have a sense of humor. Thanks for point that out.
I spelled his name wrong on a message board. They called Mark someone else for over two hours. I should've know better, they didn't surprise me.

Gibbs doesn't do any thing by luck, but I agree, it was luck that Carlos Rogers was not already picked. He also made sure we got Campbell. Gibbs travelled to Auburn with those two in mind to help rebuild his championship team. And as an Auburn alum, I couldn't be more proud.

The character players Gibbs focuses on will take us far. I do feel bad for any player that is booed, especially a new young one with so much pressure on him (Jones), but am sure grateful there is no controversy surrounding our new draft picks.

During the last game they actually said that Rogers wanted to come here so badly that he called coach Gibbs a lot prior to the draft to make sure we were going to pick him. So it was a mutal thing between him and Gibbs apparently. The kid's tough and he's only going to get better in GW's system.

Yeah, there is nothing better than having a player who wants so badly to be on your team. He did well today, I thought. Did you see that hit he had on Tatum early in the game?? He's small, but he is powerful---slam!!!
