If he isn't, the Rock and Betts will be. They're big enough to hammer it in. And that's the thing with Portis- he doesn't score from one, he scores from 60, 45, and 20.

2. Portis will cost just as much, if not more than baily, which spells bye bye to Kearse and any other top flight FA DL

No chance a one-time Pro Bowler exceeds or equals the cost of a 4 time Pro Bowler considered by many to be the best at his position. Gibbs, Snyder (emphasis on Gibbs) et al aren't stupid enough to handcuff themselves by blowing a huge sum on one player.

Yes. In his rookie year Shannahan used Mike Anderson on goaline. But last year Portis got all the goal line duty.

Against the Chiefs he scored like 5 TD's in 1 game.

I think a top 3 RB is worth a top 3 CB.

IF, the Skins GET A PASS RUSH we WONT NEED CHAMP.
The D Line could preasure the QB and sack or hurry. Hurried QB's throw bad passes and ANY NFL CB can pick of a bad pass.

The Skins will now focus on fixing the pass rush, then the loss of Bailey will not be as extreme. Meanwhile, we would have a 22 year old superstar RB.

excuse me FIOS...but Portis already told Denver management he'd hold out a year if his contract was not renegotiated. So a new deal is an assumed part of the alleged trade.

Portis, with 2 1500 yd seasons, is gonna want want top 5 rb money (s.davis money at least).

no one really doubts that he'll cost a lot, do they?

Denver also scored the third most rushing TDs in the NFL (20) with 14 of those coming from Portis. This from a team that scored 39 touchdowns altogether. So he accounted for more than a third of their touchdowns despite essentially missing 4 games.

Clinton Portis' grow on trees

late bloomer.... league blew it on draft day and let this guy fall, fall, fall... but now he's one of the best backs in the NFL.

I'm not sure why he would get 'Champ' money... he is under contract and I think considering his current contract, if the Redskins offered him a 9 year 55 million deal, he'd gladly accept it. not that they would because the guy's slated to make peanuts next year... there's a big gap between that and 6.801 million.
Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.

IF we do get Portis... IF

I bet that he gets a similar contract as Coles got. 13-15 Million Bonus, 8 - 9 years + incentives (total yards, ProBowl, etc.).

Portis will not cost as much as some think...he is young. Basically, he just wants to redo his Rookie Contract so he can be paid like Ladanian or Jamal Lewis.

I'm aware any trade means a new deal for Portis, that goes without saying, and I'm not arguing that Portis will be cheap but he will cost relatively less than Bailey. He won't be offered a $15 million siging bonus. Nor is he looking at an offer of $55 million. If they were offering that kind of money the Skins gain nothing relative to the salary cap.

I was reading the Denver Post (who broke the trade story) and it says that Portis and his agent have made lucrative offers to the Broncos management and the counteroffers were WAY off - hence the trade talks.

Yes he'll make 'relatively less', but I gurantee you he will be asking in the 10 mill range for signing bonus money, and probably a good 2-3 mill per year (between rookie and Priest Holmes numbers). That ain't cheap, and if you look at the numbers, I don't see how we'll be able to afford to sign a 1st rnd pick AND pick up marquee DL FA's, the numbers just can't work that way.

That was one of Portis' gripes with Shannahan. He was moving the ball down field and then Shannie would give the rock to Anderson for the TD. Gibbs isn't above doing that with Cartwright, but I'm sure it was brought up by Portis' agent in the negotiations.

Well, this Skins already set up the cap to fit Champ (Just in case he stayed on with the franchise tag)...so that is available.

Plus:
Bruce Smith retirement
Dalton
Haley
Chamberlain
etc, etc, etc, etc.

IF, we get Portis, he will get a 13 million bonus spread over 8-9 years. BASICALLY, it will be like if Champ had accepted the deal we offered him in the first place, instead we have a superstar running back.

Until I'm proven wrong (and god knows it won't be the 1st time) I'm going on the belief that Portis will sign a cap friendly, back-loaded deal.

with that money, we can sign our top Draft pick (plus the 2 others), 2 DL, a new cb, at least 1 TE AND a C and/or safety?!

With those people and numbers, I see no way for us to get Kearse/Sapp/any other big name DL. we'll still get Kleinsasser though.

Everybody here seems to be talking $$. What about the fact that Denver is ecpecting a 2nd rd pick from us?? I think that is absured. There is no way that this deal should get done with those terms. I don't have any idea what kind of $$ Portis will want, but obviously it's going to be a lot more than his current wages. I'm not really sold on him either though. I think that Ramsey could run through some of those holes and get the first down. Every RB put behind that line does well. Our current line however, doesn't quite open up holes like that. Frankly, I would rather have a Bailey-Alexander trade. It too, would have to be straight across. I still can't believe thy're asking for our second rounder. Hang on tight everyone, the ride is just beginning.

Dallas will have our running back. And a veteran QB......and maybe some other things that the Skins wont be able to deal with.
Trust me we have 16mill to play with and all of our players signed.

Gambit, always a pleasure to hear from a die-hard Redskins fan, as you certainly must be.
However, I gotta tell you...it looks like your (ahem...) "mover and shaker" is doing his moving and shaking in the papers again. This is exactly the type of thing to do to piss off Bill Parcells, my man. He doesn't like his players talking to the media, and he won't stomach the owner trumping him, either.
On this, you can trust me. Most of my family bleeds NYG Blue.
As always, I back my assertions with proof.

I don't know. It seems to me you ought to know what your OWN team is doing before you go around worrying about this one, you know what I'm not saying ?
Go on, now. Do your homework, and turn it in for grading. We'll give you a nice steep learning curve, 'cause we like you so much !

Yes, obviously we don't have the room to give a back a lot of money this year. But next year and the 3rd year Portis will probably be amongst the best paid backs in the league.

(OK, I'll bite Fios...)

Yeah, and it's a good thing too, now that Clinton said he's gonna have to pay Mike Sellers on the side for his ferocious blocking ;)
