How long before Lavar takes the bulk of snaps

Post by The Hogster »

I know that Greg Williams can do no wrong. Our defense is the hallmark of this team right now and I am appreciative of that. But how long does he go with his philosophy over Lavar's playmaking ability.

One thing GW has not done with his defense is force turnovers, something that Lavar has a knack for.

I watch other teams across the league and I see fumbles scooped up and ran in for a score, or long interception returns and in light of our offensive struggles, it would ge great to actually score or put our team in scoring position with the defense.

Can Lavar help there, or is he too much of a freelancer.

IMO Levar could bring this defence to the next level, he is a leader on and off the field. Levar has game changing ability, when healthy the other team has to account for where he is at on the field at all times. He can rush the passer, drop into coverage, and stop the run. When healthy he is a Pro Bowl player. Greg Williams needs to get him into as many packages as possible.

Maybe against the Seahawks he will get more snaps, since the bye gave him much time to rest.

My understanding is that Arrington is only in on blitz/pass rushing packages on defense, and is playing a lot of DE. We did not see a lot of blitzing against Dallas so he was not on the field. The seahawks passing game is based on timing, so perhaps we'll see more blitzing to try to disrupt the timing. This might be Arrington's chance to play more.

Arrington has, in the past, been known to freelance too much on defense and gets out of position on plays. Our defense requires players to play within a system and to take care of their assignments.

I read on another website that Joe said, after being drilled with LaVar questions on sportstalk 980 last night, that LaVar had swelling and had to have his knee drained. Not good if its true.

In the Post article, he said the knee felt "fine" and that he felt good. I hope the drainage was minor, the type done with a needle. Basketball players have that done at halftime sometimes, and come back to play.

I hope Lavar recovers.

I like William's attitude of a no superstar defense ala the Pats. It's really about knowing the system and buying into it. You can't tell me that Pierce is half the athlete that Lavar is but he played just as well at times last year. Lavar has had to limit his practice time with the knee and in this system, that means your playing time is also limited. Even if he felt fine in Dallas, I respect Williams for not giving him special treatment.

I really have a bad feeling about the Lavar situation. Coach Williams is an amazing defensive cordinator, and I trust him completely, but I get the feeling just like all of you do that there is definetely something going on that we don't know about. I really hope it isn't his knee that is keeping him from playing more. For his sake and the team I hope he recovers from this injury and is able to continue his career. Maybe i am worrying for no reason and everything will work out awesome. It just doesn't seem right that we aren't hearing more about this.

I heard he may come in at fullback for CP to run in short yardage plays.

Holdman is playing excellent football now. I hope LaVar turns it around and gets on the field, but I'm not losing any sleep over it. Coach Williams is awesome!

Lavar

Post by Scottskins »

I looked around and didn't see a thread on this, so if there is one, please delete or move this one.

I just want to say that I'm in complete agreement with the coaches to sit Lavar. If he doesn't want to play special teams and threatens to skip meetings if he has to, then by all means, make him sit. We've done quite well without him for awhile now and if he don't wanna play team ball, then he don't need to play.

:hmm: This is all news to me. Where did you hear he was asked to play Teams. When did he miss a meeting.

Lavar is coming off a injury and hasn't "won" his job back.

It was information that came out during today's game niksder. They are talking about it now.

The word during the game was that Lavar was asked to play on the punt team. He said he would skip team meetings and the coaches decided to sit him. The announcers seemed to make it clear that Lavar sitting was NOT because of injury...

Is that why Taylor was sitting also?

Apparently Taylor got a shoulder "stinger"...

that's what I heard anyway. Gibbs said something about hoping it wasn't anything serious.

Actually Joe said that Sean had a should strain. I wasn't sure which one it was but I guess if Taylor wasn't in there much that would be him and that's would be why.

I guess this is before the game, so it was probably just him aggrevating the shoulder again?

If Holdman is playing well in the Defense then keep Lavar o the bench.

Anyone remember that Russ Grimm had to sit the bench for a long while after he was injured ?

I for one would like to see LaVar out there, even though he may not have "won" back his spot.

I mean the guy has tons of energy, tons of talent, and is an all around playmaker. Nothing against Warrick Holdman, because he has been doing great, but I mean LaVar has to be in their more than his current role.

$ talks, and I think the guy whose making the most should at least be playing half the game.

And not that I want to trade him or anything, but what would his Cap Hit be if something like that did happen. Because if he is going to play the bench, what pay him the all that money.

I totally disagree airhog. Who cares how much money a guy is making? If he won't do what you ask, and I have a feeling it has more to do with it than just playing punt teams, then why the heck would you play him? He's gonna get the money we owe him if he plays or doesn't play. If he hurts the team by being out there, then he should sit on his butt and collect his paychecks.

He is untradeable for quite awhile. The coaches are going to force him into doing what we want him to and in the end, he will thank them for it, because he will become the best LB in the league. I think the freelancing and wanting to make big plays instead of playing his assignment are finally catching up to him. GW won't have it.

I see your point, but I just think he is a playmaker and needs to get out there more than like 5 plays a game. May that be at LB, DE, or Special Teams (if his ego will allow it).

I mean our LB crew is solid, but LaVar makes them better.
