It's 3:05 into the above audio clip. What a classy guy! He might actually have to learn to catch Santana or how about even play coverage in the first place.

Cowboys' Williams Overrated

Cowboys safety Roy Williams is one of the most overrated defensive players in the NFL. Calling the two-time Pro Bowler overrated has been fashionable of late, but it was more clear than ever during Monday night's 14-13 loss to the Redskins.

ABC announcers John Madden and Al Michaels were too busy working on Williams' Hall of Fame induction speech to notice Dallas' hold on the game was slipping late in the fourth quarter. The announcers were justifiably awed by Williams' sack of Redskins quarterback Mark Brunell. But I think Williams buys into the hype about his ability to make big plays (read: big hits) and doesn't concentrate on being a defensive back and play cautious when he has to. Out of desperation late in the game, the Redskins started taking shots downfield and their receivers were getting behind Williams and the Cowboys' defenders, who clearly didn't think Brunell could beat them deep.

With just over four minutes left, Brunell lofted a bomb downfield to Taylor Jacobs that Williams knocked down in the end zone. Madden and Michaels went nuts over the play, until they realized the ball went right through Williams' hands and could have easily been picked off. You can't criticize Williams for not getting the interception, but you have to rip him for letting Santana Moss beat him for 39- and 70-yard touchdowns in the final minutes of the game even though the Cowboys were in prevent mode.

This season has been a showcase for elite safeties. Troy Polamalu, Mike Brown and Brian Dawkins have all had tremendous starts, and Ed Reed and Rodney Harrison continue to play at a high level. The difference between this group and Williams is they excel in every facet of the position. They can all cover as well as they rush the quarterback and deliver big hits on running backs. Williams isn't even an average cover safety.

There's nothing wrong with not being a perfect player. But Williams is considered the face of the Cowboys' young defense, and he'll probably be named to the Pro Bowl annually. He's a ferocious blitzer and he can change games with his hitting ability. The question is does he help the Cowboys win week in and week out? No matter what Michaels and Madden say, the answer is no.

Roy Williams is a very very good player...when it comes to stopping plays in front of him. In that regard, he's a terror. When you play behind him...and make him run...he's mediocre, at best.

i agree with the article I have been telling my roommate that he is overrated. I told him that the cowboys need to make him a linebacker because that is the only type plays he makes.

This is one of the reason i hate the cowboys he did not give santana any credit for those plays, he got beat plain and simple.

The hilarious part is Moss is not our only weapon. Go ahead an double or triple cover Moss, that will leave ey, Thrash, Portis, and who ever else happens to be on the field open. Silly silly Roy, your comments show your ignorance.

Just looked up some stats - interesting stuff. Lets compare RW vs. ST last year. Roy started all 16 games, Taylor 15 but played in each game. I also included Roy's 2003 numbers in parenthesis. That year he also played 16 games but was really pathetic and somehow made the Pro Bowl anyway:

So basically Sean Taylor's rookie year was SIGNIFICANTLY better than Roy's third year and his second season when he WENT TO THE PRO BOWL! How can you be more overrated than that?

Also, notice just how pathetic Roy is in coverage. Over the last TWO years combined he has intercepted the same amount of balls and only defended four more passes than ST did IN HIS ROOKIE SEASON ALONE!!! Roy just isn't very good.

BTW, for fun I looked up Dawkins' numbers last year. He made 6 less tackles, defended three less passes, had two more sacks, and had an equal amount of forced fumbles and ints than Sean Taylor did. So essentially Taylor's year was at least as good as Dawkins' and HE went to the Pro Bowl last year. (ST did have 85 return yds vs. 40 for Dawkins). I always knew Taylor was good but I didn't realize just how good he was in his first season until I looked up these stats. It's scary because he only seems to be scratching the surface of his potential and he's already as good as these guys (well with RW that's not surprising).

um, is it illegal within league rules to threaten physical harm upon other NFL players? i know the "throat slash" gesture and "taunting", etc, are outlawed during games. it seems to me that this ought to carry over off the field as well, especially in a media interview. williams may need to be suspended for making a threat like that.

Sean Taylor was definitely snubbed from the Prow Bowl last year. The only reason I can see is that he was very aloof from the media and we had a losing season.

But that is ridiculous to me, the best players should go every year...period.

Roy didnt just make the Pro Bowl in 2003.

He was on the NFL All-Pro team.


I've always thought of Shockey or Urlacher or Sapp as the most overrated player in the NFL. It's starting to look more and more likes its Roy Williams.

Wow! It seems like Roy is still bitter about getting ruled....TWICE! I love it! He really takes it personally. I can't wait until December. I hope Moss burns him again. If not Moss.....I'll be happy with Patten. But it would be funnier if Moss ruled him again.

You know what I would really like to see......When we play Dallas at Fed EX in December. It would be great if Danny Boy had them show the 70 yard bomb on the Jumbo Tron. He needs to show it OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN. Just to screw with Williams some. It would be great! Don't ya think?

Yeah, it seems like Roy now definately respects our deep passing game.

I can see this really helping us in our next game. If he's going to be so keyed in on Moss it means he isn't going to be cheating to come up and stuff the run, instead he'll be cheating over to Moss.

This spells great opportunities for Portis. I would also love to see Moss draw the coverage and then Patten or Jacobs burning the secondary.

These comments only serve as positives for our game plan the next time we play Dallas.

This coming from the secondary that gave up 140 or something yards to Brandon Lloyd yesterday? Are u kidding me, listen here is the difference between the Redskins and the Cowgirls, you don't see Santana running around bragging about any plays he made or any stupid comments coming out of redskin park. The cowboys are pure drama queens and premadonnas and i hope that on one endzone play against the cowboys in the next game we have Sean Taylor on offense and he knocks the living bejesus out of Roy for implying he'd attempt to hurt a brother from the U.

Before Moss / Patten / ey / Thrash / Jacobs runs past Mr. Williams, I hope and expect that Mr. Samuels and Mr. Jansen and Mr. Sellars and some friends will run him down. Over and over.

Williams likes the horse-collar from behind. Gibbs and Bugel like smash-mouth. They also like bulletin boards with quotes from fat-mouthed opponents.

He is surely our #1 and know teams know it.
Our running game is not great, atleast compared to top running teams.
