Will Jason Campbell be any good?

Post by die cowboys die »

as you all i know i've been one of the consistent ramsey supporters on this board. well, barring an injury to brunell, that issue is apparently over. so what i want to know is, those of you who watched campbell in college, is he going to be any good? why, or why not? i never saw him play. your comments would be appreciated.

Gibbs is coaching him from the beginning of his NFL career. So the answer is yes.

You didn't see any of the preseason games? His stats dont convey how good he is (preseason).

He has all the tools that Ramsey doesn't have plus those that he does.

Campbell has:

1. Mobility
2. Pocket Awareness
3. Touch
4. Cannon
5. He has good height to be able to see over the line easily

IMO Ramsey is missing 1, 2 and 3. Ramsey isn't a statue, he can move when he needs to but he so often doesn't feel the pressue prior to being sacked that he can't escape.

i did see the preseason games but he had very limited action, in a non-gameplanned situation, working behind a scrub o-line throwing to scrub WRs against a scrub defense. so i was wondering how he looked in more realistic games, if that makes sense.

i agree he showed those 5 attributes, despite a good amount of head-scratcher throws mixed in as well.

You mean form his college days? His team was undefeated if that displays anything to you...?

I think you answered some of the question yourself. You agree that he displayed the 5 things I mentioned and you admit that it was we he was surrounded by below average players.

Now insert him behind our 1st string line and with our WR's. I think that he could start for us next season if need be. I dont think it'd happen though.

I like Ramsey as a person. I think that is development stage was screwed over by this organization and its lack of intelligence in anything football at the time. Ramsey had/has great potential but its time for us to move on and for him to also.

Jason has great potential and Gibbs is going to great lengths to make sure that he's brought along slowy and with care. Sadly Ramsey didn't have such a great coach.

i want to make it clear i did not intend this to be a "ramsey vs. campbell" thread or anything. i just didn't get to see him play in college, that's all. just curious about him.

Im not trying to turn it into that but Im trying to convery the differences between them. You wanted an opinion on Jason and Im just using some contrast to give you an idea of what he's capable of.

Don't get all gun shy now! I know its been a ruff week.

it's cool, just making sure. i still think ramsey has a good shot of going somewhere else and playing well, but not much point in dwelling on it for the time being (at least, until a game later on if brunell stinks up the joint). :D

I'm still not convinced that his throwing mechanics won't be an issue at the pro level. He cocks his arm back too far and appears to have a sloooow, long release. The ball, looks pretty while in the air, but, I'm afraid that he might easily get the ball swatted out of his hands, before he even has time to release it. Not always, of course, because our O-line will protect him, and because he has mobility, but, I'd hate to get a crucial turnover on account of his throwing style.

Overall, though, I think he was a solid pick, and Joe believes in Him. Following "Joe's gut" proved beneficial with Brunell as a starter on Monday Night, so i'm more than willing to give Joe the benfit of the doubt with his assessment of Campbell.

i'm sure the qb coach will work with him during the off season to clean him up a bit,but the talent and know-how is there :!:

dcd - I think you are asking a very valid question. I was originally very supportive of Ramsey and felt that he only needed to get coached up to be a "find". I liked the BS the media gave us about his background etc... Fact is he may have been hurt more than helped (by his early NFL experiences) and it seems that Gibbs was very leery about him being the starting QB and most likely (as we now know) brought in Brunell for that very reason. We all saw a very bad deal out of Brunell (last year) that resulted in Ramsey getting the job but Gibbs apparently still had his doubts. This year Gibbs saw the improvement in Brunell but he felt he had to let Ramsey lose the job - to Gibbs IMO Ramsey did not step up and now Brunell is the starter.

Ramsey is the back up for now but I think Joe may be trying to get Campbell ready in case if the switch is made and Ramsey is still making the same mistakes then we may indeed see Campbell.

Cambell is intriguing in that he has more upside and talent coming out of college than Ramsey did and it may be that it is a lot easier for Gibbs to get him ready for the NFL than it is to get Ramsey to the level he needs to be. At least as far as Gibbs comfort level is concerned.

I am excited about Campbell but I'm not sure he will be ready as soon as we need him. By that I mean be ready to the level that Gibbs would like.

We deserve a very good QB and one that makes good decisions at the NFL level. This is very different than college ball - take Brady and Henson at Michigan. Brady could not get on the field because Henson was a better QB.

Here's hoping that Cambell is a good NFL QB and maybe he's going to show that very soon. I am still nervous about Brunell but Ramsey just does not seem to have it.
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

I would participate in this thread with an opinion but REALLY, the more time passes, the less I really feel I know about the QB situation in Washington.

By that I mean -anything- can still happen. I will not be surprised about any future choice made by Joe.

totally agree and it is the one key position where you need to have a quality NFL player. Our QB situation is VERY questionable and will continue to evolve.

Isn't he also injury prone? I'm not saying it's directly related, but I'd like to know how many times BL has been hit as he releeeeeeeeeeases the ball. I wouldn't want our QB of the future taken outta the game way too soon.

He's a little wide-eyed at this point. Like anyone would be. But he's big, strong, smart, mobile and has an excellent arm. He's got a ton of upside and I'm hoping he gets some PT this year. Preferable in DC while up 72-0 on Dallas

I'm really sick of the knife Ramsey posts. He saved our collective face last year and was virtually our only hope during the Spurrier fiasco, which spread pieces of him across the fields of the NFL. He's averaged 200 yds plus per game as a Skin and less than an interception a game in the worse situation imaginable. I don't know what's worse about you Ramsey haters: your stupidly or your ingratitude.

I think Campbell will be a good QB. He seems poised in the pocket and pretty accurate.

It will be nice to see us with a QB who is a legitimate scrambling threat. Not that Campbell is any Cunningham or Vick, but he definitely will turn some of those 3rd and 6's into first downs when no one is open.

Not really. Word is that Gibbs says that if Brunell were to miss sigbificant time Campbell will take over and become the starter from then on out just like Leftwich did. Ramsey will only go in if Brunell can't finish a game or he has to miss one game or something like that. I have heard this from many sources and apparently it's straight from Gibbs but I haven't seen anything in the papers.

Campbell's touch and accuracy are what really impresses me. Sure he has a cannon but he can make every throw on the field. He can throw some really pretty balls and drop it in there right between the coverage. His athleticism is very impressive and he is hard to bring down but he is a very good pocket passer because of his great arm. His mobility is just the icing on the cake.

Hello? Is this thing on?

Ok. I think we've beaten the Ramsey issue into the ground 10 times over by now.

This thread is about Campbell, and whether he will be a good NFL QB someday -- this year or any other.
