Ramsey Addresses QB Change By Gary Fitzgerald Redskins.com September 14, 2005
Patrick Ramsey spoke with reporters on Wednesday, two days after he was replaced as the team's starting quarterback.
Asked about his reaction to Joe Gibbs' decision to start Mark Brunell next Monday night at Dallas, Ramsey replied: "Just as I've said, I don't agree. I feel like I wanted to play. I wanted a chance to play. Coach Gibbs and I have talked about it. I wish Mark the best. I truly do."
Patrick Ramsey (Don Wright Photo) Ramsey also addressed media reports suggesting that he had asked to be traded: "I'm not leading anybody to believe anything. Coach Gibbs and I have talked and what was said is between us. I haven't specifically told Coach that I want a trade."
As to whether he felt like Gibbs' decision was unfair, Ramsey replied: "It was Coach's decision. He said he had a gut [feeling]. It's his decision and that's what we're going to go with."
Ramsey played three offensive series in Sunday's 9-7 win over the Chicago Bears. On his third offensive series, Ramsey was sacked by Bears' linebacker Lance Briggs, who came in on a blitz and tackled Ramsey with a clothesline tackle around the neck. Ramsey fumbled the ball and it was recovered by the Bears.
Ramsey suffered a neck sprain on the play and was replaced by Brunell the rest of the game. Brunell was 8-of-14 for 70 yards and guided the offense to three field goals. Ramsey was 6-of-11 for 105 yards and one interception.
After Wednesday's practice at Redskins Park, Gibbs praised Ramsey for his professionalism in dealing with the change.
"For me, Patrick has handled this better than one could ever expect," Gibbs said. "He's been very professional. I know he doesn't like it. He's a competitor. I have great admiration for the way he's handled this. I really do. That says a lot about him."
Added Gibbs: "Patrick had a great attitude today [at practice] and we're going to go to work, because you never know in that situation he's in at what point he'll be back in the game."
Gibbs was asked if he was concerned with Ramsey's confidence level at all.
"Quarterbacks have to be unusually tough mentally," Gibbs said. "Most of them go through some real tough times. They have tremendous pressure and most of them have grown up with that. From a confidence standpoint, I think Patrick has it."
The quarterback change notwithstanding Ramsey and Brunell remain close friends.
Said Ramsey: "This doesn't affect our relationship in any way. It probably just brings us closer together, if you want to know the truth. I know that sounds odd, but that's the truth."
He actually is handling this very well, (if the reports are accurrate)
I mean, if I was in his shoes and I had worked my butt off the whole offseason, and waited all last season, and my time to shine finally came... for three series! Well I would have cussed the coach out.
Now not particullary Joe Gibbs, just in general. I mean, lets say Joe Jones starts 10 weeks, and sucks, then I start 1 quarter and get yanked... I would be furious and litterally cuss my coach out.
But I think Joe Gibbs realizes and apprecciates Ramsey's patience and how he's handling this so I think Patrick still has a chance if/when Brunell screws up.

Of course he wants a trade, I would too. Why do you think he said it, what was said in the meeting is between Joe Gibbs and I.

Ramsey said that he didn't specifically request a trade, but he deserves a trade. I think that he has the talent to become a productive starting QB in this league. But, that will seemingly never happen as long as he is a Redskin. He deserves a chance and some respect from Gibbs.
I think Joe probably told him that he's going with Brunell and we also will (very likely) need Ramsey. I do not think this is as bad as we all thought it was.
I agree that Ramsey is very disapointed in a lot of ways about what has happened to him since Joe became the coach. But I also think he realizes he is also very likely to be our starter very soon. I believe that Joe wants to win with either but if Brunell gets injured OR if Brunell does not play up to the level that Joe expects our QB to play he will make another change. In the past that would have seemed very unlike Joe but now - he has pulled Ramsey, and after only 3 series. I know that he probably was not happy at what he was seeing in the pre season and at practice, but, just like he did with Ramsey, IMO, Joe will not wait if Brunell is as bad as he was last year.
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

You got it, Hogster. Maybe he didn't specifically request a trade -- but I'm be betting he told Gibbs to be expecting a call from Mr. Sexton and the Ravens.

Honestly, does anyone expect Ramsey to go on some Terrel Owens type tirade? He's a professional, hes acting as he should be acting.

Yesterday, the only question Ramsey declined to answer concerned his turnover issues (two touchdowns and four interceptions) during preseason games. Ramsey was intercepted once Sunday by the Chicago Bears and, according to another offensive starter who requested anonymity, that interception -- on Ramsey's second pass of the game -- occurred when a receiver ran the wrong route, adding to Ramsey's frustration about the decision.
wow, no i didn't see that. very very interesting. one thing i did notice was that moss made no effort to go after the pass, he clearly thought it was intended for patten. so it wouldn't surprise me if either the pass was for him and he wasn't expecting it to go where it was, or moss knew it was for patten, and patten wasn't where he was supposed to be.
i'm not saying it might not've just been a bad throw, maybe it was. but it seemed weird.

Was there a blitz from the defense on the play? I don't remember. If so, Ramsey might have expected one of the receivers to run a "hot" route and the receiver read it differently...one of the problems of QBs and receivers "getting to know" each other.
