Well you can either pay to have a good back-up, or you could end up with the likes of Shane Matthews, Danny Woefull, or Rob Johnson.....
I think we learned our lesson.

Mark Maske confirmed that the contract is major league backloaded and that there won't be nearly as much of a cap hit as people I have seen on here are scared of. I would pay 2 mil a year for a successful backup who could keep winning ways alive with no hiccup. How many teams have we all watched lose momentum due to a p*ss poor backup coming in... Atlanta last year let's say? Playoffs to cellar dweller? Come on - in this league of paper mache QBs, many teams would be envious to be in our situation. I expect Gibbs to be with Ramsey a lot to soothe this out and Gibbs is a master motivator.

Brunell wanted to go where he could start and maintained he didn't want to become part of a quarterback controversy, although that could happen in Washington. Ramsey has become a popular player in his two years with the team, and his agent recently suggested Ramsey might request a trade if Brunell were signed. Gibbs has said he has no intention to trade Ramsey.
Steinberg did not say Brunell received any guarantees from Gibbs about the starting job.
"Obviously Mark's been a starter since 1995 and is confident of his ability to lead a team," Steinberg said. "But he looks forward to the ability to compete for a starting job in training camp."
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2004/football/nfl/02/19/bc.fbn.redskins.brunell.ap/index.html
So - Once again - it is Sexton running his mouth and Steinberg confirms that there is no guarantee that Brunell starts - he is looking forward to competing to start....
Still nothing on the "radio report".... and it has been 2 hours - think ESPN wouldn't wanna scoop everyone with "confirmation"?
Smiz - he gets 8.6 mil in his pocket the day he signs. The length of the contract makes it cap friendly. He has no intention of staying past 3-4 years I am sure.
Think of it another way - I would love to be 34, earning 600k to a mil a year to sit on the bench, study and NOT be the guy getting pounded, but that is just me - sounds like a nice job
Oh - Hasselbeck carries the clipboard in the ever fun 3rd string position - Hamdan goes bye bye

Make no mistake...Brunell is expecting to start.
From the comments that he made previously and Yesterday on the radio interview. His pre-Gibbs statements were that he wanted to go to a team where he could start (4 yrs) and that he did NOT want to go to a team that was going to draft a QB in the first round. He didn't want the QB controversy. He didn't want a repeat of what he had in Jacksonville.
Yesterday, his statements were quite brazen. He said that the coach can "call it a QB competition" but he knew that he had the clear edge to be a starter because of his experience and his large contract.
How should Ramsey respond to this...He stands to lose 2.5 million dollars.
"...If Ramsey is in 50 percent of the Redskins' plays this season, a $2.5 million salary incentive is triggered. If Ramsey participates in less than half of the Redskins' plays this season, his 2005 salary is a maximum of roughly $600,000."

I like Brunell being brash to some extent - it shows that he has confidence in his arm and talent and that he hasn't taken a hit to his psyche with the lack of success in the past couple of years.
He can say what he wants - PRam has the ability to whoop his butt come training camp and if he just shuts his agent up and gets down to it, I expect to see him starting.

Brunell can Chat it up all he wants! Here's a prefect quote from the washintgon post...
"When you make a decision on what you're paying a quarterback, you're making a very good calculated decision [on the starter]," New York Giants GM Ernie Accorsi said. "But Gibbs didn't win three Super Bowls because he's going to let [a contract] make a decision. The great coaches -- and he's certainly one of the greatest of all-time -- are going to play the best guy."
If he comes in and win's the job great! But his contract isn't gonna win it for him. I don't care who starts as long as we win.

Welcome Home Coles
I guess the Skins could be stupid "guest", but I don't believe they are going to trade Ramsey.
And my take on all of this is they probably didnt talk to Ramsey before they made it clear of their intentions to bring in a serious competitor to his starting job. Not that the Redskins should HAVE to do that, but in this particular situation, they are finding out their incumbant ain't down with it, which is causing this problem.
So, in their rush to get this deal done, what they've actually done is simply created one more problem than they had before this offseason started. And no offense, but this team already *had* a ton of personnel problems.
So in essence, it's not what the REDSKINS want to do with Ramsey, it's what RAMSEY wants to do with the REDSKINS, which is leave them. And you can say till your blue in the face that the Redskins own his rights and they dont have to trade him. The fact is, he can also make life miserable for everyone in Washington and FORCE a trade if he really wants to. We'll see, I guess, in the coming 2 weeks.
You got sarcastic and defensive when you
Wrong. Lie. Youre the one that STARTED with the "bucky" nonsense, and the queer "lets go into the smack forum so I can unload sarcasm on you" or whatever the stupid stuff you said was.
quote]I think this is all crap. Guest you have alot of freaking nerve. You cannot come into a party and expect everyone to agree with you when you put down their team![/quote]
I didnt put any team down here. I simply call it as it IS. Did I call them "foreskins" or any of that other nonsense? No. Did I call everything as I both heard it and see the Redskins as? Yes. There's nothing wrong with that. Just because I dont have a sunshine story to share with Redskins fans, doesnt make it wrong, doesnt make it bad. You just have to realize all aint well in Washington. That's the moral of this story. They got some big time issues and now they've just pinned the hopes of their franchise on a 34 year old, OFT-INJURED QB. Good luck with that.

If anyone know's anything about Ramsey, they know Ramsey won't "make life miserable" for everyone. He's not that type of guy. He's probably letting his agent raise alittle rucuss right now to see if the SKINS will bend and trade him. But there not going to, at least not for a high price. And once Training Camp starts, he'll get his Agent to shut it, and he'll compete for his job, like eveyone else on the team.

Guest I was having a very nice weekend until I read your comments. Do you really believe this stuff or are you just trying to make us jump on your comments here.
You did come in to start trouble. Whether you'd like to admit it or not. You posted crap that has already been posted. You said things you knew we didn't want to hear.
My first point here is that you and the people starting all of this stuff, have NOT read the contract signed between Brunnell and the Redskins. His contract very well could contain the same type of clause as Patrick Ramsey's does. So if it's his butt that lands on the bench he will be the one taking the pay cut.
Of course he's coming out all pumped up, saying he's going to win. Would you expect any different? Did you see the Panthers come out for the Super Bowl going, "well we know we are the weaker team so we can only try our hardest". That wasn't part of any interview I heard. And do the presidental canidates come out going "well I know the polls say I'm losing so I can only TRY to win" Nope. Fact is it's a part of healthy competition. We'll take it. His words are already firing up Patrick Ramsey or at least his agent. WHO by the way stands to make more money if Patrick is traded! Hmmmm wonder where these rumors are coming from.
And aside from this I'd like to bring up one example. The St.Louis Rams. Did Kurt Warner think he was going into the season to be a back up last year at this time? I betcha he didn't. I betcha he would have made comments almost identical to ones we are hearing from Brunnell. Unforunately for Brunnell years of experience don't earn you top billing here. Joe Gibbs has said it. So if Brunnell would be an overpaid back up, what the heck was Kurt Warner???
Do you think he wanted to be there? NOPE Was he? YEP. Every game there he was, in his uniform, on the sidelines. So my take on this is we give Brunnell, Kurt Warner's phone number so he can get some good sound advice.
The other point this brings up is that QB's happy or not that are under contract are not able to just say "I don't want to play anymore!". A contract is a contract! And you cannot just change your mind. Part of life. And Patrick has to deal with it. I love Patrick Ramsey and I can completely understand that he is feeling unappreciated. But I guarentee that we will show Ramsey how very much we appreciate him at Training Camp! Speaking of training camp, you wanna see why Ramsey is sticking around, crawl out of your hole "Guest", and head to Ashburn. I can give you directions if you'd like!

I am so sick of the guest dwellers who come in here and not start but continue these freakin rumors. There have been good points made by many but I am going to reiterate a few things. I apologize if I sound redundant
The first thing is that Ramsey is under contract and not a big cap hit and whether he likes it or not he isnt going anywhere. So let me get this straight JG wants to have 2 starting quality QB's so the first thing we do when we find the second is trade our first. COME ON!
Secondly it just goes to show how much our guest friend knows about football. We are going to trade a first round pick with tremendous promise for a 2nd round pick. WOW that sounds real smart.
And lastly Ramsey is going into his third season since when is that the Prime of his career. Dude go somewhere else and lurk.
I am going to break this down from my perspective. Brunell will start this year and Ramsey will observe and work on all the things that he needs to. The people on the board know already what he needs to work on so I wont bore you with that. He will really make a strong push for the starting role the following year and push Brunell to the B/U position. He will only be a fourth year player with a year under Gibbs and help from Brunell. Then we can say this guy is in his prime. This is what not only the Redskins need but Ramsey him self. People need to relax and JG do his job.
NOTE: To all future guests please either post something with intelligence or go to a Cowboys site. Thanks.
