Dolphins | Could Release Madison - from www.KFFL.com Fri, 20 Feb 2004 06:04:28 -0800
The Miami Herald reports that the Miami Dolphins could release CB Sam Madison if they are not able to agree on a new contract. Madison will count $8.1 million against the salary cap this season, but the team is $15 million over the cap. Madison's agent hopes to make a deal with the team and expects Madison to end his career with the team.
Wow, that wouldn't be too bad to get him if he gets released.

#60 Chris Samuels: 6-time 6-time 6-time 6-time 6-time 6-time Pro Bowl left tackle!
I'd be good with that, but still say 7 million a year is too much for a CB. And that is probably what he would cost. Buy my guess is we will re-work his contract, but if not, hopefully he and bailey on the market together would bring down the cost.
he won't be cheap. if we are gonna pay big $$$ we might as well give it to champ. ty law is expected to have to restructure or be released as well. seems that the corners that get these mega deals aren't worth it in the end, and have to deal with this type stuff. personally, i'd like to land winfield, if at all possible.

Winfield over Madison? You cant be serious! I understand it might cost more to land Madison but hes your prototype shut down corner. The two FA corners I want the most though, is Chris McAllister and Charles Woodson.
i was very serious. he's probably the best bang for the buck out there at corner. if you want to pay mcallister or woodson, why not keep champ and pay him. you're looking at about the same money. winfield is only 26. and not to mention had 92 tackles last year, under gregg williams.

The reason you wouldnt wanna keep Champ and pay him is because if he goes you can get a lot in return, 2 firsts, or 1 first and a 2nd round pick. Think of it like this... The Skins trade Champ for 2 first round picks and Woodson/McAllister. Sounds good huh? And I guess your right about Winfield being the best bang for his buck, being 26 made me change my mind. Regardless though, I would rather have McAllister/Woodson.
It wouldn't be realistic for us to cut Madison. The dead cap hit alone would make that impractical (6.2 million).
Sam wants to stay in Miami. We just need him to restructure to provide some cap room and reports like this is just part of the process. (current cap hit about 8.2 million)
We do have a DE available. OGUNLEYE is a probowler who added 2 sacks against Dallas when we spanked them on Thanksgiving. We will likely place a 1st & 3rd round tender on him.

Regardless though, I would rather have McAllister/Woodson.
i'm telling you that's not gonna happen. if we could afford another superstar contract, champ wouldn't be on the trade block. he'd get the $$$ he wants. mcallister/woodson arent going to come here for any less than what champ would stay for. it would still be a break the bank contract, which we are trying to avoid by trading champ.

Gee do you think the fact that guys like Law and Madison are cap casualties or possible ones that that proves that the cap figure currently set for cornerbacks is WAY too high and the league is starting to realize it?
Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.
