Vince Lombardi

Post by skinsfano28 »

Today, meaning the 3rd, marks the anniversary of the death of one of the most legendary coaches, motivators, and men, Vince Lombardi. I know we've all, at one point in our lives or another, found a quote from him and sat in awe of his brilliant simplicity, and his ability to get the point across to his players and motivate them to play for him. Now, here are some of his most legendary quotes, starting with my favorite:

"Winners never quit, and quitters never win"

"A man can be as great as he wants to be. If you believe in yourself and have the courage, the determination, the dedication, the competitive drive and if you are willing to sacrifice the little things in life and pay the price for the things that are worthwhile, it can be done. "

"A school without football is in danger of deteriorating into a medieval study hall."

"But I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, his greatest fulfillment of all he holds dear, is the moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious."

"Coaches who can outline plays on a black board are a dime a dozen. The ones who win get inside their player and motivate. "

"Confidence is contagious. So is lack of confidence. "

"Dictionary is the only place that success comes before work. Hard work is the price we must pay for success. I think you can accomplish anything if you're willing to pay the price."

"If you aren't fired with enthusiasm, you will be fired with enthusiasm."

"Individual commitment to a group effort - that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work."

"It is time for us all to stand and cheer for the doer, the achiever - the one who recognizes the challenges and does something about it."

"It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get up."

"Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile."

"Mental toughness is many things. It is humility because it behooves all of us to remember that simplicity is the sign of greatness and meekness is the sign of true strength. Mental toughness is spartanism with qualities of sacrifice, self-denial, dedication. It is fearlessness, and it is love."

I'm sure most of you didn't read all that, but i could live my life by what he says. As a basketball coach for both my Boys State team and a league team, a DECA officer, and a Boys Stater (for those of you who don't know what that is, its a week long program given by the American Legion to the top juniors at state high schools to study government and develop leadership skills), I find Lombardi's ability to communicate, motivate, and make his players the most efficient and best they could be drives me to emulate him when i am leading whoever it is i am leading, whether it be my players on the court, or this country at some point down the road. his lessons are invaluable, and im sure most of you will agree to that. there is a reason the super bowl trophy, the uppermost echelon of greatness, is named after him. Here's to a legend, a man among boys, and a leader beyond any i have ever seen, Vince Lombardi.

I'm pretty young, and so I grew up long after Lombardi had already died, but he has always fascinated and inspired me. _When Pride Still Mattered_ is a book that I'd recommend to anyone even remotely interested in the man.

It is a great post. But I would have thought about it in the Around the League Forum. I seldom visit The Longe.

In any event, it is a great post and a good tribute to Vince Lombardi.
Daniel Snyder has defined incompetence, failure and greed to true Washington Redskins fans for over a decade and a half. Stay away from football operations !!!

My man RiC, the Mod-At-Large. Still correcting, in a roundabout way.
Found a way to get a post in without directly offering comment on the subject. It's an art, I tell you.
"Sit back and watch the Redskins.
SOMETHING MAGICAL IS ABOUT TO BEGIN!"
JPFair- A fan's fan. RIP, brother
