I read in the paper this morning that the Mavs were looking at the possible signing of Doug Christie who would help replace some of the defense lost by the release of Micheal Finley, expected soon.
Can anyone tell me why the Mavs are considering releasing Finley? I think he's a great player and would be an exceptional pickup for any team. The only thing I can think of is that it's for financial reasons.

The same reason Christie was released.
From what I understand, it's part of the NBA's new CBA and allows teams to recoup big chunks of salary. I think Finley was owed $30 mil or something.
I'm not sure how much of what I typed was correct but I think that's the jist of it.

thanks Jake....right, if I understand it the CBA allows for a one-time release to avoid the luxury tax tag
guess what I was wondering is why wouldn't he renegotiate....or could he?
if he doesn't, some team will be lucky to pick him up (and I'd figure with a much cheaper price tag)

he got cut last night...the rule is that the owner doesnt lose any money because of the luxury tax, but his salary still counts against the cap. therefore, they can still go out and sign players over the cap but the salary value is augmented and it can get a team into trouble, but with christie's salary it shouldnt be a problem.
Sean, may you always rest in peace and look down on us with the same love that we look up to you.

As a Mavs fan I don't mind losing Finely all that much, I am tired of watching him take shots he has no business taking and spend one-third of the year on the bench. The flip side is that I KNOW he will burn Dallas and will be a perfect fit in San Antonio. If only they could get Nash back ... still the stupidest thing Cuban has ever done

I'm just if not more excited about the Van Excel signing - what a great addition to an already talented group. I have a feeling he's going to light it up from 3 pt land and open up the lane for Duncan.
Signing these two may be the end to Devon Brown in SA, however. He's a neat story and hopefully he'll get a shot somewhere else.
