Patten and Moss vs Coles and Gardner? NO COMPETITION!!
What a fantastic move by Gibbs to get Moss and Patten to replace Coles and Gardner. I never realized just how important speed is going to be in this offense, but was it just me or was it OBVIOUS that Moss can FLY? That boy is a playmaker, and his speed is a step above anyone else on the defense. Pittsburgh were forced to respect Moss and Patten, and IMO, that's going to have a trickle down effect on the rest of the league. With each week, and with each little improvement where we stretch the field, other teams are going to be forced to defend against Moss and Patten stretching the field, which as you know will mean gaping holes for Clinton Portis.
Now, the only thing that's troubling is Ramsey's propensity to underthrow the ball on the deep routes. If he could just pick it up a notch and hit Moss or Patten in stride, then this Offense will put some serious points on the board, cuz those guys will get down the field and break free from the opposing D. But, what used to be Ramseys strength is apparently now his weakness. Maybe it can be fixed, I don't know, but we can't fault Moss or Patten, those boys can get down that field in a hurry. Equally as important, is the way each of them get the yards after the catch. I admit to pleading ignorance to Santana Moss, but after seeing him last night, I'm a fan. I don't care how small he is, he comes to play and that boy can move!!! Even the balls that were underthrown and they showed him in stride, you could see he was FLYING!!!!! Even when he had to come back and make a leaping catch over the defender!! He's a playmaker!!
The point of this thread? I'll take Patten and Moss over Coles and Gardner ANY DAY!!!!
The result of this? Portis will have a career year, IMO.
Thoughts?

Moss and Patten
Couldn't agree more with your take on our new recievers. The bunch we had last year simply couldn't get open and Gardner was known as 50/50 for good reason - good riddance! Moss and Patten bring an added dimension to our offense which should open up the running game. Imagine, an offense that can run and throw - what a concept! Not only that, but the offensive line is playing well and with Portis and Betts, we have some decent running backs. The defense continues to amaze and astound and with Lavar back and unleashed, the defense should be as good as they were last year. The team is hitting on all cylinders but for one position: quarterback. Ramsey remains inconsistent whereas Brunell looks like a leader. The big question then is this: will Gibbs stay with Ramsey to give him time to develop which will invariably cost us several games? Or will Gibbs go with Brunell who appears to have returned to pro-bowl form?

Yes....I'll take our current receivers. The have already shown they can get open down field and run with the ball after the catch. I think we'll also see, Moss especially, running the ball on mis-direction plays and we'll really see his speed payoff. It is becoming very clear that the new receivers', and the way we are using them, are forcing defenses to defend the entire field. Portis and the running game will benefit, as well. No doubt things are coming around for our beloved team....better fasten your seat belts 'cause its going to be a wild ride.

Same here!! Even on television, you could see and almost feel how fast that dude is!! He's a legitimate big time playmaker threat, and my prediction is that after a few games, teams are going to begin to realize that the threat of him getting downfield and open is real.
Again though, we need Ramsey to hit him in stride. That, IMO, is going to be the most crucial factor in our offense. I originally thought that Ramsey was going to have to gain more composure in the pocket for our offense to click, but he seems to be much more relaxed in the pocket lately. It looks so much more comfortable taking the snap, dropping back, and letting it rip all on one fluid motion. I can almost feel the cohesion of the Offensive line myself, and they certainly look like they're working more as a unit now than they ever have. Does anyone think the OL may have miscommunicated on the interception that Ramsey threw? I know they were blitzing, but could the OL have done something to get that guy that came at Ramsey untouched? Irregardless, I think it was a bad decision and one that he can learn from. Also, I can guarantee you they're going to come up with some kind of plan should the same situation arise again. As Scottskins said in another thread, maybe Thrash erred by not turning quick enough when he saw the blitz coming.
Nevertheless, I was utterly impressed with the speed that Moss and Patten showed last night, and it has never been so obvious that Gibbs is doing whatever it takes to stretch that field and open it up for Portis. I've always said that no matter what the Redskins do, Gibbs is so good that you can get a sense of what he's trying to do just by watching them from one week to the next. Gibbs did a fantastic job of play calling last night. Even though he used some decent things to try and stretch the field and open it up, I'm sure he has a lot more in his bag of tricks that he'll be unveiling once the season is underway and once the Offense has made improvement on a consistant basis.
I could talk for hours today!! I'm really excited about what Moss did last night, and it sure opened my eyes to his speed. Gibbs is clearly opting for speed over size, and I don't see anything to show that it's a bad decision. Moss and Patten are dynamic!!

Remember Sonny on radio last week pointing to that play and saying, "I used to love that". He would look up and hit Mitchell or Taylor and they would do their ex-RB thing.
With Ramsey/Thrash, it looks like a combination of (a) common understanding between the receiver and the QB, and (b) ice-cold calm in the QB, and (c) a good arm in the QB.
Ramsey has always had (c). Issue (a) is practice, and we know a coach who believes in "practice makes perfect and perfect wins football games".
I'm hoping for (b).
Ramsey improved as the game went on...the game-thread said that he improved as he seemed to get fired up.
Next game? I can't wait for the next game.
Yeah, I too was impressed with Moss and Patten.
Moss is just so exciting to watch, kind of like Barry Sanders. I mean I know this saying is used a lot, but every time Moss has the ball he can easily take it to the house.
And Patten is just so solid. He has great vision and conncentration.
At first, I was a little nervous about the new group and how they would have to re-gel, but now, all I know is Joe Gibbs is a genius.

I remember when we got Moss the knock on him was injury and that he didn't like contact. Well last night if I remember right he stayed in bounds on his 40 yard catch and run and did everything but avoid contact. I like that he cut back inside instead of running out of bounds. I hope he stays healthy because he's absolutely a nightmare for defenses in the open field.

great post JP.I love that Gibbs doesn't care about ones size and other things. Gibbs looks more at someones ability to make plays(rather than size).I think that the Moss trade was a gift to us.Thank you Coles!!!!!!JPFair wrote:What a fantastic move by Gibbs to get Moss and Patten to replace Coles and Gardner. Unbelievable, they're so good that I feel like Ramsey should have gone 15-19.
And who said small WRs are hard targets to hit? These guys have soo much speed and spread the D soo much that secondaries struggle just to keep up with them. Because of this the CBs and Safeties don't even seem to know when the ball is coming half the time because they're focused on the guy who's catching the ball and have no idea what is going on in the backfield. For this reason these guys are given lots of time to make adjustments when the ball is in the air and Ramsey has a bigger margin for error.

Serious, Moss is Mighty Mouse, blink and he is gone, the best part is he and Patten have GREAT hands and can burn you after the catch, Moss and A. Brown have D. Green type speed or very close. Lovin' it.
Concerning Ram's he is still not a long ball passer i.e. go route up field, seem better at the 13-23 yard post or outs. Still doesn't have the direct vertical passes down, those under thrown balls are no good during the regular season. But we won
Dam our 1st and 2nd WR's are Good !!! yesss.

it's actually not really a word at all.
"Usage Note: Irregardless is a word that many mistakenly believe to be correct usage in formal style, when in fact it is used chiefly in nonstandard speech or casual writing. Coined in the United States in the early 20th century, it has met with a blizzard of condemnation for being an improper yoking of irrespective and regardless and for the logical absurdity of combining the negative ir- prefix and -less suffix in a single term. Although one might reasonably argue that it is no different from words with redundant affixes like debone and unravel, it has been considered a blunder for decades and will probably continue to be so."

in 3 halves of preseason foosball, moss has been open for long TDs at least 5 or 6 times, maybe a few more. we didn't have anyone open for long TDs 5 or 6 times total all last season! gardner gets seperation less often than siamese twins.
on most of those potential TDs, the pass has been off by a a few yards. ramsey is getting it close, just not quite there yet. i have a hard time believing that as the season progresses, he won't make the proper adjustments and start getting those balls to drop in the right spot.
however!, i think the most important thing to keep in mind is this:
even when ramsey misses on those long passes, as long as they are close, it still benefits the offense tremendously. as long as you are at least CLOSE on a reasonably consistent basis, the defense has no choice but to honor the deep pass, just in case. the incomplete pass won't get us a TD or any yards directly, but it will still open up space for portis to run through.
despite the big questions we still have about the offense, in general it looks much, much better than it did at this point last year. i dont' think anyone could disagree with that. and all we needed was a decent improvement- one more TD a game. i can't see how we aren't at least one TD a game better at this point.
