Injuries were the main focus of head coach Andy Reid's press conference Monday.
Wide receiver Justin Jenkins, who was injured on the opening kickoff Saturday night against Baltimore, is finished for the season after tearing his ACL.
Reid said that Carlos Perez will take over the No. 5 spot in the receiver rotation. Perez has "had a good camp" according to Reid. In the two preseason games, Perez has a team-high seven catches for 62 yards.
The other key injury update involved cornerback Dexter Wynn. After taking the opening punt of the game 74 yards for a touchdown, Wynn was injured on a defensive play in the second quarter. Wynn suffered a high ankle sprain and will not play this Friday against Cincinnati. It "would be a stretch" for Wynn to make the season opener against Atlanta.
RB Reno Mahe takes over punt return duties for Dexter Wynn Reno Mahe, who was the primary punt returner at the start of 2004, will take over Wynn's role.
"I felt comfortable back there doing it (last year)," Mahe said. "I have to work a lot more on it. I did a horrible job of it last year as in my average per returns. I have to get better to help the team. I don't know what happened. I just didn't do my job."
Mahe averaged 5.7 yards per return on 19 attempts in 2004. Reid said that Mahe is a secure catcher, which is "the first thing you look at." But Mahe said that he wants to be more than that.
"With Coach (John) Harbaugh and how great he coaches up these guys, you gotta do more than that (catching the ball)," Mahe said. "You have to do your part in making plays.
"Like Deion Sanders says, there's always a seam. You saw Dex last game, he hit it perfect."
Reid is comfortable with Mahe as the main punt returner for now.
"I think he'll be fine," Reid said. "The first thing you look at is securing the football. Then, (you look at) pounding it up in there and how many yards you can get after the catch. He is a secure catcher and he can be productive back there."
Reid said that cornerback Lito Sheppard and running back Brian Westbrook will backup Mahe as the punt returners. Reid is not completely against the thought of putting a starter in to return punts, but he would like to avoid it if possible.
"I'm not saying that we won't do that," Reid said. "Right now, I'd rather not go that route. But it can happen."
Injury Report
Running back Correll Buckhalter is meeting with Dr. James Andrews today. An update on his status could come later on Monday.
Defensive end Trent Cole (sternum), defensive end Jamaal Green (foot sprain), center Jamaal Jackson (tricep tear), linebacker Mike Labinjo (shoulder contusion) and defensive tackle Keyonta Marshall (PCL sprain) will all miss Monday's practice.
Cornerback Matt Ware will return to the field after being sidelined with knee soreness and a toe injury. He will replace Wynn on the field.
Uh-oh, another Philly reciever down for the season! Seriously, T.O. and Drew Rosenhaus have to be involved in this somehow, it seems a little too convenient.
What the heck is going on up there?! And now it looks like Buckhalter's knee might be serious. Weird stuff.
Just a couple of days ago on the Eagles website they had him listed as second on the depth chart for one of the WR positions behind T.O. so he must have been the third or fourth guy on the squad.
Now Perez has taken his place on the second team so he is not the fifth reciever as they state in the article.
On ESPN they had Jenkins listed as the third reciever ahead of Reggie Brown as well.
Philadelphia wide receiver Justin Jenkins sprained his right knee on the opening kickoff and was taken from the field on a cart. Jenkins is listed as Owens' backup on the depth chart.
Whatever the story is, and wherever he was on the depth chart they don't have many options left at that position, especially if T.O. becomes a problem.
I have seen articles that say Perez is replacing him as the fifth reciever behind those other guys but it's preseason so it's still all up in the air.

(Aug. 24, 2005) -- The Eagles informed us that backup running back Correll Buckhalter underwent season-ending surgery Aug. 23 to repair a torn patella tendon in his right knee. The surgery was performed by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala. Buckhalter was injured in practice on Aug. 5.
This is Buckhalter's second surgery to repair the patella tendon in his right knee. He was originally injured during the second preseason game of 2004 against Baltimore on Aug. 20 of last year. He underwent surgery by Dr. Andrews six days later and was placed on the Injured Reserve lis

Over on the Eagles message board they are already talking about which one of these guys they could get.
The other Names I've hear are:
Dorsey Levens
Eddie George
Najeh Davenport (via trade)
Lamar Gordon (via trade)
Travis Minor (via trade)
Sammy Morris (via trade)
None of these guys scare me (except for Davenport but I don't see him getting traded). It would be scary if they got one of our guys. We have to keep them.
The Eagles right now have a running back core of Westbrook 5'8 203, Moats 5'8 210, Bruce Parry 5'10 200.
They have no size at all. Look for a transaction to be coming very soon.

Holy cow! This is nuts. But then again he was out all last year and it didn't make a difference. Also, Moats is very impressive. Still, it certainly has to be worrying for Philly especially because this really puts Buckhalter's career in jeopardy - out two seasons in a row with the same injury, not good.
Well, he is converting to a new position so that can take some time to make an impact. The only thing I saw of him was a nice block he made for Nemo against the Panthers.
Yeah, I think that Gibbs is trying really hard to keep our guys healthy, I just hope they'll be in football shape when the season starts.
