The Champ and Detroit deal

What's up guys and gals. Again, I don't know how accurate this news is. I was visiting the Detroit Lions message board again and according to ESPN radio, it says we're close to trading Champ for Detroit's 2nd rounder this year, and their 1st rounder next year. ESPN supposivly said that we didn't want this years 1st rounder because of our cap situation. Then again, the lion fans might be hearing what they want to because they want Sean Taylor really bad. If we lose Champ, I hope we get Sean Taylor to beef up our secondary.

Hmmm... I don't see the Skins giving up the possibility of a 6th pick this year for a pick that they don't know the position of next year. If they are afraid of the cap situation they can trade the pick down... I think I would classify this under the unlikely rumor column.

I can tell you that I will organize a friggin march on Cerrato's office to hit him in the head til he learns something about drafts and trades if he does this stupid stunt.

If we trade Champ we need at least a 1st this year and a starting caliber player...or a 1st and a second pick.

Otherwise, talk to Atlanta...Mr. Blank sure could use Champ, since their secondary sucked last year...Blank is boys with Gibbs and Snyder talked with Blank in the offseason about Champ already.

And Champ has ties to that area in a big way... from reports there are 5-8 teams seriously talking to the agent, Reale.

Could be a mighty nice offseason folks.

I don't know. We seem to have a lot of cap issues. And we might be banking on the posibility that the lions will be even worse next year. Historically, they suck.

I saw on one mock draft (for what that's worth) where Atlanta will deal their #1 and Duckett for Champ - that would be the minimum that I would take...

Duckett is good. And Atlanta has the pick after Detroit. I'd rather have that. I think Duckett is better than any back we'll get with a 2nd rounder. He was Atlanta's 1st rounder 2 years ago and is a big bruising Gibbs back.

Jeez - all we need is another possibility ::Grin:: we don't have enough nail biters for everyone, huh?

I bet they come up with something to stave off the troubles, and don't forget we can save a lot with some roster cuts which I expect we will start seeing sooner rather than later.

We have 6.5 mil... can get another 6.5 from Bruce... add in 5-6 players at 1 mil or nearly... we will have 17-18 mil... Detroit fans are gonna be disappointed to see it happen but it will..

Woah there buddy. You say Duckett is better than any back we can get in the 2nd round? What about Greg Jones from Fl. State? He weighs exactly the same as Duckett, but hes less than 5% body fat, which is saying hes a a very muscular dude . Also, Jones has much more speed than advertised, whereas Duckett is just "average" in his speed.

We should draft Kevin Jones he is going to be an impact RB. I watched him play high school football here in Philly. He's gonna be a perenial Pro Bowler.

I definitely think Kevin Jones should be the skins pick at #5 regardless of whether others believe he will be selected that high. He is the one back i've seen that can break a long 60 yard run and get the tough yards between the tackles, and that is a lethal combination. His only flaws are pass protection and pass catching out of the backfield which can be easily improved over time. The intangibles he possesses are unmatched, period. I hope he shines in the combines and catches Gibbs' eye.

My concern with Jones is that he blew his knee out 2 years ago and hasn't looked the same. He's good but has durability questions. Plus he's not really a receiver RB. I know Duckett isn't too much either, but at least he doesn't have a history of knee injury. Jones is fast but not really fast enough to pull away. Its a tough call, 6th pick & 2nd rounder or 7th pick and Duckett. I guess I just think Duckett has proved he can perform in the NFL, even given his limited opportunity. You can't say that about Jones.

Man if we got TJ and a #1 pick from Atlanta, I would take that in a second. TJ is nasty. That sounds like wishful thinkin though.

Also on the prospect of VT running back Kevin Jones. I think hes a great player, but I don't know if hes right for the NFL. Im wonderin how hes gonna fair in the combine, that'll be his chance to prove the doubters wrong, im thinkin Sean Taylor would be the better pick with the 5th overall.

Hello to all. I am a Detroit Lions fan from Detroit and I just want to give a perspective of what's going on here in the D. Right now it's very hard to tell which way the Lions are trying to go with this Champ deal. It's disappointing to learn that Champ was tagged, but there is still the possiblity of getting him. Right now, we're pretty happy with the 6th pick and will probably not deal it. It's a nice pick for us to have and it might be just too steep of an asking price. If we do deal that pick, someone in the Lions front office will probably get strung up by an angry mob of Lions fans. It would be fantastic to have Bailey playing opposite Dre Bly. We do know that other teams are interested in Bailey, but I heard on a radio station in Detroit wednesday that Champ was coming to Detroit for a visit on thursday. Detroit does appear to be pushing for Champ the hardest. What we have in store for him when he's here, I don't know. I'm not even sure he's coming, but it's what I heard so take this with a grain of salt. However, we are still hoping to use some leverage in one aspect that other teams can't. We have his brother Boss. Hope you enjoyed this post, good luck to you all and we'll see what happens.

Getting tagged doesn't really affect anything. It really probably just means that the Redskins felt that the players that they were being offered in a trade were less valuable than the picks they would be guaranteed with the franchise tag.

It may also mean that the Redskins already feel that they have establiished Bailey's worth to other teams, and whether or not their own contract offers to Bailey were reasonable.

This is peculiar only in that now the Redskins are over the cap and have until march 3rd to get back under the 78.1 million magic number. If Bruce doesn't officially retire over the next two weeks, the Redskins will be forced to lose a little of their potential cap savings and cut him. Otherwise they will have little money to pursue free agents.

Honestly, Bailey getting tagged isn't the worst thing that could have happened. If Bailey isn't a Redskin next season, then we will at least get a very good compensation package for him. You can't let great players go without getting SOMETHING back. So one of two things will happen:

1: Bailey is traded, we use the trade package (2 1sts? a player and a 2nd rounder?) to get help at RB, DL and S. We will also need another corner (Antoine Winfield?) I don't feel confident with Smoot at 1 and Bauman at 2. Not with our idiot safeties, anyway.

2. The best corner in the game stays in DC (Fine with me! I'd rather have a total of about three defensive players over Bailey.) We have to get creative with cuts and find bargains to fill any holes Gibbs sees fit to fill.
