Report: Owens leaves after verbal spat with Reid

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Terrell Owens exchanged words with head coach Andy Reid at a team meeting Wednesday and was asked to leave, according to news reports.

Owens then got his belongings and cleared out of Eagles training camp at Lehigh University, according to two television reports.

Earlier Wednesday, he had missed practice for the fifth time in six days because of a left groin injury.

Owens worked out with the team's assistant trainer for about 20 minutes on a separate playing field from his teammates, catching balls from a machine and doing some light running. He did not speak to reporters or acknowledge the fans who chanted his name.

The All-Pro receiver sat out practices last Friday and Saturday. He returned Sunday for both the morning and afternoon sessions, but hasn't practiced since.

Owens is unhappy the Eagles have refused to redo his contract as he enters the second season of a seven-year, $48.97 million deal.

Last season, Owens had 77 receptions for 1,200 yards and a franchise-record 14 touchdowns before severely injuring his ankle late in the season. He missed the final two regular-season games and the first two playoff games before returning for the Super Bowl, in which he had nine receptions for 122 yards.

Coaches get mad when the same injury keeps you out of practice one day, then not then next day, and then again the day after that. They start to think you are faking it.

The real question is- will Terrell Owens ever play for the Eagles again? I say there's a decent chance that he will not.

If this was almost any other player on their roster they would've either traded him or released him by now. He complains about his contract, is a general jerk to everyone at camp, fakes an injury, and then storms out of camp. You think that they would put up with this crap from Thomas Tapeh or Reno Mahe? No way in hell.

The Eagles pride themselves on holding everyone accountable and not letting any one player be above the team. It's like Andy Reid said when Pinkston went down: We wont make any adjustments, the next guy will just step up. So how much longer are they gonna let TO get away with this? And if they do let him get away with it how long will it be before Corey Simon and Brian Westbrook start to act out more in their pursuit of a long term deal?

Who has the cap space to take him on now? Although I agree there is a good chance that he won't be there next year, especially if Philly loses or doesn't even the make the playoffs. The latest from Comcast says he's supsended for one week; I'm not sure if this means training camp or for week 1 of the season.

This is so dumb.. I really think that there is something going on in Philly... All TO wanted to do was perform and do his job, and like T.O. said he is not paid to sign autographs.. If T.O was indeed rehabbing is groin that is understandable

But he is paid a huge sum of money to sign autographs. I don't know if you realize it or not but a professional athletes get there money for one thing and one thing only -- to put fannies in the seats. The NFL's a business and like any other business owner, an NFL owner really only cares about the bottom line. Make no mistake though, winning is good for the box office, so performance on the field does matter.

When given a choice between having Michael Vick or Tom Brady, I'd be willing to be that almost every owner would go for Vick while a vast majority of the coaches would go for Brady.

Owens seems to have forgotten that while the owner is signing the checks, the money in the account it is drawn from comes directly from the wallets of the fans. Signing a few autographs should have been the least of his concerns.

Here in Philly land there're saying TO may have been suspended by Reed...I don't like the Eagles but I love the way there FO and coaching staff handle things like this

Furthermore, I don't get how everyone thinks Andy REid is some genius, he hasn't won any thing as of yet and in fact chokes in big games. Why is he so hyped?

TO is pretty much unbelievable. I can't believe a grown man doesn't realize the potential harm he's doing to the team that he says he wants to play for (at a higher price).
We're lucky to be where we are at WR...does anybody think that LC would've eventually come out the same way ?

Whoa now. Philly is still the definite winner in the TO sweepstakes. The league engineered a trade of one of the best WRs in the NFL to them in exchange for essentially nothing, even though Baltimore was offering a #2 pick. End result? Philly goes to their first Super Bowl in 25 years and the Ravens are home for the playoffs, largely due to a terrible passing game. The TO trade has already paid off for the Eagles. Even if he never plays another down for them he helped them make the Super Bowl and cost them nothing.

actually... he didn't help them get to the Super Bowl... they actually did it this time themselves... but he does take up a roster spot and his 'acts' are now a big bump in there plain of getting there again and winning it... especially when they need him the most with all their WRs down... I wouldn't call them winners at all... not in this situation...

I still say TO was the best player the Eagles had in 2004 and a big reason for their success. It's not like they gave up anything of value to get him. I think they would go back and make that trade again. If they had given up a high pick or a good player to get him I'd say it was a mistake, but they gave up nothing.

i'm amazed that i actually agree with you, skinz_domin8. reid does not seem to have the capability of game-planning for the "big games".

say you never got to third base.... so you go to this party one night, on the way you buy this bottle of jack, mix it with some rocks.. ice for the non-drinkers... and it makes you the MVP of the party... yet... after all that... you still don't end up at third base... and now you have a killer hang-over... and Tylenol won't get rid of it...

Haha while I do like the metaphor I still don't agree.

T.O. was awesome last year for Philadelphia. He completely revolutionized their offense. That game he had on MNF where he embarassed the great Roy Williams over and over was worth the small amount they gave up alone. Philly's defense was not as overpowering and dominant as it had been during the previous couple years and they needed their offense to compensate. T.O. was the main man on that offense. I know that these Eagles fans who stalk this message board bc ConcreteField sucks won't agree with me, but they NEED Owens on the field if they want any chance of making it back to the Super Bowl. He is their best player.
