Redskins Sign Johnson, Release Palmer

Post by Jake »

This morning, the Redskins announced the signing of tight end Robert Johnson to add more competition to the blocking tight end position. The Redskins released the 6-3, 259-pound Billy Palmer, an undrafted rookie out of Notre Dame, who was a long shot to make the squad. Johnson -- who made his first NFL appearance with the Chicago Bears in 2003 -- is considered a good pass catcher and solid blocker at 6-6, 278 pounds. A former Auburn Tiger, Johnson was released by Chicago before the 2004 season and signed with Tampa Bay's practice squad in December.

Redskins Sign Tight End

Associated Press
Monday, August 8, 2005; 10:58 AM

The Washington Redskins announced today they've signed tight end Robert Johnson.

The team calls Johnson a natural pass catcher as well as an effective blocker who is expected to add depth to Washington's tight end corp.

The six-foot-six Johnson entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Atlanta Falcons in 2003 and was waived prior to training camp. He then signed on with the Chicago Bears, who waived him before the 2004 season. Johnson signed with Tampa Bay's practice squad in December.

The Redskins did not announce the terms of the contract.

Johnson will wear jersey number 40.

man that guy is huge! i wonder if he could become another red zone target? he serves a great purpose apparently, because not only can he catch but he can block, so it wouldn't be like a sure-fire passing situation if he was in the game. i've never heard of the guy and he'll probably be way down on the depth chart, but one can't help but wonder whether he can be a TD-Maker for us--if he even makes the squad.
Sean, may you always rest in peace and look down on us with the same love that we look up to you.

Hail to the Redskins!

I also read they've been working Lennie Friedman into the rotation to see if he could be put in as blocking TE on some packages. I thought that was interesting.
The opinion of 10,000 men is of no value if none of them know anything about the subject.

And I think it's an excellent idea. Especially if every once in awhile, they throw it to him. ;-)

You would think that a guy that big would be snapped up by someone. Makes me wonder abou this skills. But then again the blocking TE is not in vouge these days. Perhaps its just that coaches are looking for recieving TE's and this guy doesn't have great skill in that area.....lets hope Gibbs and crew have found a gem.

Johnson is another Auburn guy so I'll try to add some insight. I remember him well, he was a good TE at Auburn that just came out to the NFL too early. He was a good receiver and I distinctly remember him running over a safety on route to a touchdown in a game against a SEC opponent. I don't know if he received bad advice from his agent or what, but he had the idea he'd be a first-rounder and I don't believe he was even drafted, pretty sad. Anyway, here is some good information on him:

Man that sucks at Palmer. He had one chance at the NFL as a undrafted free agent and sadly this is probably gonna be the end of his pro career. Good thing he went to Notre Dame, at least he probably has a good head on his shoulders and find a good job elsewhere.

He has to take what he has learned and move on. Palmer is being replaced by a former undrafted rookie that didn't even make it to TC his first time out.
