53 Man - Survivor Update

Post by Texas Hog »

Our second look at who we think will make the final 53-man roster for the Redskins. As we're a few days into practice now, we've added the Skins Stock Market section so that you can see whose chances of getting on the the final roster are rising and falling.

53 MAN ROSTER PREDICTION

OFFENSE

QB's (3) - Patrick Ramsey , Mark Brunell , Jason Campbell
RB's (4) - Clinton Portis , Ladell Betts, Nehemiah Broughton , Rock Cartwright
WR's (5) - Santana Moss , David Patten , Taylor Jacobs , James Thrash , Antonio Brown
TE's /H-backs (5) - Robert Royal , Chris Cooley , Mike Sellers, Manuel White , Billy Baber
OL (9) - Chris Samuels , Derrick Dockery , Casey Rabach , Randy Thomas , Jon Jansen , Ray Brown , Jim Molinaro , Mark Wilson , Cory Raymer

DEFENSE

DL 8 - Renaldo Wynn , Brandon Noble , Cornelius Griffin , Phillip Daniels , Joe Savale'a , Demetric Evans, Ron Warner , Ryan Boschetti
LB's (7) - Lavar Arrington, Marcus Washington , Warrick Holdman , Lemar Marshall, Robert McCune , Chris Clemons , Jared Newberry
CB's (5) - Shawn Springs , Walt Harris , Carlos Rodgers, Garnell Wilds, Artrell Hawkins
S's (4) - Sean Taylor , Matt Bowen , Ryan Clark , Pierson Prioleau

SPECIAL TEAMS

LS (1) - Ethan Albright
K (1) - John Hall
P (1) - Tom Tupa

Last Five On
Last Five Off

Billy Baber TE
Brian Kozlowski TE

It is a sad indictment on the talent level and depth at blocking TE when the two guys fighting for the backup job are Billy Baber and Brian Kozlowski. Kozlowski was allowed to leave after 2004 because he played in only a handful of games and performed poorly, dropping easy catches. At this point undrafted rookie Billy Palmer has not made much of an impression in challenging for this spot. I think that we may see a veteran acquisition here in the next week or so. Keep an eye on the Saints Boo Williams .

Jared Newberry LB
Clifton Smith LB

With Chris Clemons almost assured of a spot, the last position comes down to a handful of LB's. 6th round pick Jared Newberry is barely holding on to the last spot at the time of this report, the reason being that Clifton Smith is continuing to impress the defensive staff now the pads are on. The young players have pushed themselves in front of experienced duo of Brian Allen and Khary Campbell, making Allen expendable already.

Artrell Hawkins CB
Rufus Brown CB

This battle comes down to whether the Skins want another young player on their CB depth chart or an experienced veteran. Given that the Skins have young players in Rogers and probably Wilds holding down two of the 5 spots, Brown is still eligible for the practice squad and Hawkins is a very good ST's player, then Hawkins will win the last spot on the depth chart.

Cory Raymer C
Lennie Freidman C

Neither of these guys impressed at C last year and they both have been hard to make a case for as the backup to Casey Rabach. Signing a vet backup C or putting faith in young guys like Nowland or Warner are not beyond the realms of possibility but for now, Raymer keeps the roster spot because he played better than Freidman last year (for what that is worth).

Ryan Boschetti DL
Charles Howard DL

Ryan Boschetti played in a couple of games last year as an undrafted rookie free agent and impressed the coaching staff, and he has the versatility of being able to play tackle or end. However, the defensive staff have also been impressed with another undrafted rookie free agent from 2005, DE Charles Howard. Boschetti has the edge coming into camp, but this is the type of battle between two relatively raw but talented young players that is worth watching.

THE SKINS STOCK MARKET RISING STOCKS

WR/KR/PR Antonio Brown - has all but assured himself a roster spot after three days, with some excellent work on returns and as a receiver. Brown has gotten big raps from Joe Gibbs. "He has looked extremely good at receiver," said Gibbs. "I've been super-impressed with him. He's probably caught as many deep balls as anybody out there. He has to be one of the fastest players in the NFL." That's essential for a player in the latter part of the roster. Brown is super fast, has some moves and has shown he has decent if not totally reliable hands at this stage.
LB's Chris Clemons and Clifton Smith - Some doubted their ability to make the roster in the earlier offseason - particularly Smith - but our sources at camp have indicated quite clearly that both these lads are ahead of Khary Campbell, Brandon Barnes , just about past 6th rounder Jared Newberry and made ST's ace Brian Allen expendable. Dale Lindsay and Greg Blache are very impressed by the improvement in Clemons pass rush technique, while Smith continues to show improvement and keep the heat on Lemar Marshall in the middle.
P Andy Groom - Groom has been booming punts early in training camp and offers real competition to veteran Tommy Tupa . However, there is more to punting than just kicking over a distance. Hang time, directional kicking and the ability to do this under game conditions all come into play. This will be an interesting competition when we get to preseason games.
QB Bryson Spinner - while no one expects this guy to make the roster in front of Ramsey. Campbell and Brunell (although some may argue on the latter), Spinner has impressed the Redskin coaches with his strong arm and good technique. Spinner might be playing himself onto the practice squad for 2005.

FALLING STOCKS

1. WR Kevin Dyson - our sources tell us that Dyson has done little to help his cause to make the final roster with some very average displays at camp so far. He's probably dropped below McCants on the depth chart after the first three days.

2. OT Mark Wilson - has been having trouble developing his protection techniques, regularly getting pushed back into the pocket and the QB. Given that Jim Molinaro has looked the much better prospect at OT - and has more versatility being able to play both tackle spots and even Guard - could spell the beginning of the end for Wilson .

3. CB Ade Jimoh - fans have been trying to get rid of this guy for two years, and at last we may get our wish. Good ST's play has seen Jimoh survive two roster purges in two season, but with the talent at ST's being greatly upgraded this offseason, Jimoh becomes expendable. In camp so far we have seen and heard reports of him being regularly burned by receivers, so his days are well and truly numbered.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=c ... type=story

I thought this was a good read to share.

Sounds like we'll finally get our wish of Jimoh being sent packing.
God bless our troops and Joe Gibbs.
We'll miss you, Joe.

Based on what I saw yesterday at practice, he looked lost. We do not have room on the practice squad for a marginal at best backup quarterback.

He had looked decent earlier in the week. He probably looked lost because they started piling on new stuff after Campbell reported.

I went on Monday and Thursday. On Monday Spinner looked pretty decent but he did look lost to me too on Thursday.

I believe this was written prior to yesterday's practice, and I only said he looked good in yesterday's practice. ;-)

Yeah. He ran good routes and caught the ball most of the time. That's pretty good.

How about Dyson compared to McCants? And either of them compared to the five WR's predcited to make it?

Personally I think Dyson has been better than McCants... I don't know what's wrong with D-Mac, but he's had a terrible camp so far in my opinion.... distant... lacking concentration... not the way he should be playing if he wants to make a run at finally contributin to this team. Aside from the dropped passes, he just seems to be 'mailing it in' out there... just one guy's opinion.

Patten has been solid, but not spectacular... same with Moss. They all definitely still look like we are in the throws of training camp where guys are getting acclimated and consistent crispness is lacking. Thrash has been Thrash but I can't help but think that he looks just a tad slower... maybe it's just because of the contrast to the couple of the real speedsters...

In my mind, Antonio Brown and Taylor Jacobs have been the two WRs that have impressed me the most, though perhaps it's because I 'expect' a little less.

I've been a little busy down here with a lot of behind the scenes stuff but I will try to be more interactive with you guys through next week... it's just hard when people are dragging you all over the place each day.

Tomorrow I will start a thread for people to ask me any TC questions that they want answered and I will do my best to answer them.
Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.

Hm...

We might sign Boo Williams! YAY! Get the former hog. He could help our passing game, I think, a bit more than Royal.

yes sign boo williams! plese! anything to help our blocking. While everyone here is fine with our o-line, i am not. I know Jansen and Raybach are going to make a big difference, but im still a little iffy, and would love to have a great blocker TE.

Warpath's Latest Prediction on who will make it. D'Mac Fans will not be happy. Agree? Disagree?

53-Man Survivor: Update 3, 8.16.05

Antonio Brown--Stock Rising By Robert Large WarpathInsiders.com
Date: Aug 16, 2005

53-Man Survivor Updated 8.16.05--The single most important mission of a coaching staff during training camp is to determine which 53 players will make the final roster. By extension, there are a few dozen players who are in a desperate struggle to make that list of 53. That is the focus of WarpathInsider.com’s exclusive feature, 53-Man Survivor.

Following is our prediction on what the makeup of the 53-man roster would be if the final cutdown was made today. Underneath that list we have identified the Last Five In, the ones who just barely make it and the Last Five Off, the ones who are knocking on the door but not yet in. It is among this group of players that most of the movement on and off the final 53 will occur.

We also present our Skins Stock Market, our barometer of which players’ fortunes are rising and which ones have one of those precious 53 spots slipping from their grasp

This is our third version of the roster and while the vast majority of the jobs on the team appear to be safe, the battle for those last five spots on the roster is fierce and the leaders in the race are ever-changing

Offense

QB’s (3) – Patrick Ramsey, Mark Brunell, Jason Campbell
RB’s (4) – Clinton Portis, Ladell Betts, Nehemiah Broughton, Rock Cartwright
WR’s (5) – Santana Moss, David Patten, Taylor Jacobs, James Thrash, Antonio Brown
TE’s/H-backs (5) – Robert Royal, Chris Cooley, Mike Sellers, Manuel White, Billy Baber

Keep an eye on the Saints Boo Williams.

Lennie Freidman OL Mark Wilson OL

With Wilson struggling at practice and Freidman being viewed as both inside insurance at G and as a blocking TE in jumbo packages, Freidman is no longer competing with raymer for the backup spot at C.

Jared Newberry LB
Clifton Smith LB

The last LB position comes down to a handful of players. Sixth-round pick Jared Newberry is barely holding on to the last spot at the time of this report, the reason being that Clifton Smith is continuing to impress the defensive staff now the pads are on. However, Nic Clemons in the last week has overtaken undrafted rookie free agent Charles Howard as his main competition for that last DL spot.

THE SKINS STOCK MARKET

RISING STOCKS
WR/KR/PR Antonio Brown – continues to rise with good practices and a good display at receiver during the first preseason game against Carolina.
TE/H-back Billy Baber – looking like he is solidifying his spot in the TE depth chart grabbing a couple of catches against the Panthers and showing that he is a very solid blocker as well.
WR – Kevin Dyson – in our last report Dyson was doing very little to impress at training camp. However, since the scrimmage he has looked a lot better in practice and had a very solid outing in the Carolina game, including getting into sync with future franchise QB Jason Campbell. Definitely pushing for a spot now. Taylor Jacobs better get himself fit.
DE Nic Clemons – has had an outstanding week in training camp and is pushing Ryan Boschetti hard for the last spot on the roster for defensive linemen.
LB Zach Kearsey – while not really threatening the final roster at this stage, Kearsey’s performances have given him a chance to make the practice squad.
FALLING STOCKS
1. CB Ade Jimoh – its amazing that after a very good week at practice Jimoh was going to appear on the Rising list in this report – until he took the field against Carolina. Looked lost in coverage getting beat for a TD by Rod Gardner, he blew one sack opportunity on Chris Wienke running right past the QB and then hesitated on a blitz on the next play.

2. OT Mark Wilson – has still been having trouble with his protection technique.

3. WR Darnerian McCants – continuing poor practice form, combined with Dyson’s impressive last week, has seen him slip well down the list at receiver.

After tonight's victory over the Steelers, I wonder if any of the following predictions as to who makes it and who doesn't will change.

From Warpath-

OL (9) – Chris Samuels, Derrick Dockery, Casey Rabach, Randy Thomas, Jon Jansen, Ray Brown, Jim Molinaro, Cory Raymer, Lennie Freidman

Defense

DL (8) – Renaldo Wynn, Brandon Noble, Cornelius Griffin, Phillip Daniels, Joe Savale’a, Demetric Evans, Ron Warner, Ryan Boschetti
LB’s (7) – Lavar Arrington, Marcus Washington, Warrick Holdman, Lemar Marshall, Robert McCune, Chris Clemons, Jared Newberry
CB’s (5) – Shawn Springs, Walt Harris, Carlos Rodgers, Garnell Wilds, Rufus Brown
S’s (4) – Sean Taylor, Matt Bowen, Ryan Clark, Pierson Prioleau

Special Teams

LS (1) – Ethan Albright
K (1) – John Hall
P (1) – Tom Tupa

Bold italics indicate player is one of the Last Five On

Last Five On
Last Five Off

Billy Baber TE
Robert Johnson TE

While Gibbs likes some experience in his TE/H-back corps, recent free agent signing Robert Johnson is slowly making some progress here. He had a 24 yard reception in Friday’s game against the Bengals and blocked very soundly. Given that Manuel White is finding the transition from running back to H-back a challenging one, this will be a crucial decision. Remember that Johnson caught passes from future franchise QB Jason Campbell at Auburn. Still don’t rule out the Skins picking up a TE off the waiver wire when the first round of cuts are

Lennie Freidman OL Mark Wilson OL

With Wilson struggling and missing time due to injury suffered in the preseason opener, and Freidman being viewed as both inside insurance at G and as a blocking TE in jumbo packages, Freidman is no longer competing with Raymer for the backup spot at C.

Jared Newberry LB
Clifton Smith LB

This battle for the last LB roster spot continues, and yet there is still no clear cut winner. Arrington, Marshall, Washington, McCune, Holdman and Chris Clemons (because of his pass rush ability) look sure to make it. However, don’t discount Khary Campbell completely just yet.

Rufus Brown CB
Omar Stoutmire S
Now that Artrell Hawkins has been placed on Injured Reserve the last defensive back spot will come down to whether the Skins want a fifth CB or fifth Safety on the final roster. Stoutmire has the edge in experience and plays free safety, while Williams likes his young, developing cornerbacks from last season.

Ryan Boschetti DL
Nic Clemons DL

Ryan Boschetti played in a couple of games last year as an undrafted rookie free agent and impressed the coaching staff, and he has the versatility of being able to play tackle or end. However, Nic Clemons in the last week has overtaken undrafted rookie free agent Charles Howard as his main competition for that last DL spot.

The Practice Squad Prediction

Here’s my early shot at the 8-man practice squad, assuming the 53 man roster I posted above is the final one.

· LB Zach Kearsey

· DT Aki Jones

· OL Mark Wilson

· QB Bryson Spinner

· TE Robert Johnson

· DE Charles Howard

· WR Jamin Elliot

· LB Clifton Smith

THE SKINS STOCK MARKET
RISING STOCKS
1. WR/KR/PR Antonio Brown – continues to impress after another good showing against the Bengals. It is certainly not out of the realm of possibility that he could end up the #3 receiver by the time the season starts.

2. WR – Kevin Dyson – Continues to show improvement as he shakes off the remaining rust. Definitely pushing for a spot now. Taylor Jacobs better get himself fit. If he can contribute on ST’s he may force Gibbs to keep 6 receivers. In fact I’ll put him on my next list if he has another good week and game against the Steelers.

3. DE Nic Clemons – has had an outstanding couple of weeks in training camp and is pushing Ryan Boschetti hard for the last spot on the roster for defensive linemen.

4. DT Aki Jones – while not really threatening the final roster at this stage, Jones’ performances have given him a chance to make the practice squad.

FALLING STOCKS
1. CB Ade Jimoh – can’t see him making it this time. He’s been too inconsistent.

2. OT Mark Wilson – has still been having trouble with his protection technique and now has been injured for the past week.

3. WR Darnerian McCants – continuing poor practice form, combined with Dyson’s impressive last fortnight, has seen him slip well down the list at receiver. Did nothing to help his cause in Friday’s nights game against the Bengals.

Just a note that a practice squad is NEVER made up of just the Redskins cast offs. always includes players from other teams...

I wonder about T. Jacobs. If he still has a bad toe, how can Gibbs start the season with him on the 53?

If he goes to the practice squad, how replaces him?

And what about our Dyson/McCants battle? Are they both gone?

One decision may be Omar Stoutmire vs. Rufus Brown. One is a safety (where we are strong) and one is a CB (where we are thin due to injury). However, after watching last night's game, Stoutmire was all over the place and had a strong game. Plus, with his ST play, I think he should make the team.

93 Daniels, Phillip
94 Warner, Ron
95 Salave'a, Joe
96 Griffin, Cornelius
97 Wynn, Renaldo
98 Marshall, Lemar

Practice Squad:
14 Parson, Rich
37 Brown, Rufus
48 White, Jr., Manuel
52 Keasey, Zak
77 Nichols, Jerome
79 Howard, Charles
99 Newberry, Jared

Tough Decisions:
Robert Johnson not making the roster
Clifton Smith not making the roster
Mark Wilson not making the roster or PS
Aki Jones not making the PS
Billy Baber
Kevin Dyson
Nic Clemons not making the PS

That's a good list. My list would exclude:

23 Jimoh, Ade
41 Kozlowski, Brian
94 Warner, Ron

My list would include:

37 Brown, Rufus
82 Billy Baber
90 Nic Clemons

I'll go with your practice squad players.

Yeah, I'll go with Jake's list except...

Cut:

41 Koslousy

Sign:

87 Dyson

And sadly I see Ade Jimoh making it, even though he may be the worst player in the NFL.

We're not going to keep 7 receivers on the roster. That's why I didn't include Dyson.

Another reason I didn't include Dyson is because of Darnerien's confidence on his chances of making the team.

However, after watching last night's game, Stoutmire was all over the place and had a strong game. Plus, with his ST play, I think he should make the team.

I think Gregg Williams said he's going to keep 5 safeties, so that's why I have 5.

I would probably keep Omar on the roster anyways if 5 safeties weren't a given. He has been outstanding so far.

True. Although I do believe Dyson has talent to make the team, you are right that we don't need 7 WR's when there are already 6 good ones on the roster.

But do you think he could be kept on the PS? Now, I'm not really sure how the PS works, but do you think we could just store him there and then bump him up if say Jacobs were to get hurt?

Or is he too high profile to be stuck on a Practice Squad?
