Seen and heard at Redskins camp
August 3, 2005

Sellers goes down
H-back Mike Sellers crumpled to the ground during a blocking drill yesterday afternoon. When members of the training staff tried to help Sellers up after examining him, he went down again. Sellers had to be carted off, usually the sign of a serious injury. However, director of sports medicine Bubba Tyer said Sellers had just suffered cramps in the heat and will be fine.
Shotgun
The Redskins briefly went to the shotgun formation with pads on for the first time during Hall of Famer Joe Gibbs' 13 years as their coach. Gibbs, long leery of the scheme, was convinced of its usefulness by new quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave, formerly Jacksonville's offensive coordinator.
There were no errant snaps or any real drama when the offense was in the shotgun. Backup center Cory Raymer, who struggled with shotgun snaps one training camp at Frostburg (Md.) State during his first Redskins tenure, said none should have been expected.
"It went fine," Raymer said. "Casey [Rabach], Lennie [Friedman] and I all have lots of experience in the shotgun."
Second-string Sean
Sean Taylor remained a backup as assistant head coach Gregg Williams continues to punish his star safety for skipping the entire offseason conditioning program at Redskin Park.
"There are a couple of new things [installed this spring] that Sean hasn't seen and done and [Taylor's not starting] in fairness to the guys who have been here all offseason," Williams explained.
"Morale stays high as long as everybody believes they're being treated fairly. The guys who were here, the guys are playing the best are the guys who are going to play."
Sonny Segways
Redskins Hall of Fame quarterback Sonny Jurgensen, who turns 71 on Aug. 23, has found a new way to get around. The radio and TV broadcaster was rolling around on the asphalt paths that surround the practice fields on the Segway electronic scooter he bought this winter to use at his vacation home in Florida.

Jurgensen said he can go about 15 mph on the Segway. Asked if that's faster than he could get around the end during his prime, Jurgensen, whose right arm was always much faster than his legs, laughed and said, "Running was never my thing."

OVERHEARD
"You guys have already seen how smart Clinton is. He's smarter than all of his coaches. I wouldn't want to second-guess Clinton."
— Assistant head coach Gregg Williams' sarcastic retort to running back Clinton Portis' Monday comment that the play on which he raced 64 yards for a touchdown on his first Redskins carry in the 2004 opener wasn't called the rest of the season.

BY THE NUMBERS
19-29 Redskins record after their previous three training camps at Redskin Park
25-23 Redskins record after their last three training camps away from Redskin Park

TODAY'S PRACTICE SCHEDULE
8:30-10:30 a.m. — Open to public

I can't believe Jurgensen went with the Segway. I've got images of Gob from Arrested Development running through my head. . .

It's interesting to see the difference between Gibbs and WIlliams. I'm sure Gibbs didn't like the comments either, but he keeps that stuff behind closed doors. Williams will call you out on it for everybody to hear

Wait a second. Didn't the Redskins use the shotgun almost exclusively in a game against the Bears in 81? That game was the reason it was taken out of the offense.

Down with Elfin, bring back Foldesy!!

i heard GWilliams quote this morning on the radio, and i was kind of surprised at what he said, but then again it is GW--he is definitely a stark contrast to gibbs, but its ok, the defense gets their flair from him, and we wouldnt want to stop that, now would we :-P
Sean, may you always rest in peace and look down on us with the same love that we look up to you.

Hail to the Redskins!

That wasn't the shotgun... That was the quickness of Joey T. (everyone thought he was standing back there before the snap). The quick sprint obviously wore him out because he got muderlized that game.
