Superstitions/Rituals?

Post by Redskins1974 »

What, if any, superstitions do you have when rooting for your team and/or playing a sport? Everyone has a little pre-game or rally type superstition or ritual, what's yours?

For instance, the rally cap in baseball. I wear certain things on game day for instance and when I played sports, wrestling in particular, I had things I did pre-match.

List them all - and don't be embarrassed

The opinion of 10,000 men is of no value if none of them know anything about the subject.

I have to admit to owning a pair of "lucky" socks. Althought I'm pretty sure they were broken last season for the skins.

I have tried many things.

In the end, I have found that getting really plastered before, during, and after an event usually produces the best results.

I used to wonder if the Skins lost because I'd skip church sometimes to watch them.

I tested that theory out last year......all I know is that its not my fault.

I agree. I've tried many methods, one week they work, the next week they don't. But for some reason I keep trying.

When my favourite Aussie rules teams (Go Crows) are playing in the Grand Final, I (and a friend) never watch the 3rd Quarter

Have not lost one yet so it must work

what i do during a a redskins game is down right furious, you couldn,nt even read my blood pressure cause it would make you pass out.before a game i used to get on my knees on the living room floor and say a little prayer just like joe gibbs did during that nfc championship game against the vikings on that 4th and goal play. i might want to add i tore up a few plants in the living room as well during a game especially if it,s those freakin cowboys.
on raceday i,m wearing smoke attire along with my joe gibbs racing hat,the one that has the car #,s on the sides with the sponsors colors as well as the drivers signatures on the front.then i start the race from the chair then go to the floor just the way they do when they drop the green flag.

so when i have football and racing at the sametime i tend to get real rowdy .i love them both.

I've heard that wearing team colors on gameday is bad luck... I dunno about that one...

I'm not ashamed to say that I'm a Red Sox fanatic and only a Redskins fan... and when I'm watching the Sox I've found the only bad luck is making confident statements:

"Oh man, Wakefield's gone 5.1 and is OWNING the White Sox! He's gonna pitch a complete game." (cue 3 run homer)

"Millar is due for a home run here, he's gonne tie it up!" (cue strikeout)
"Guess [Ryan Kerrigan] really does have a good motor. And is relentless. And never quits on a play. And just keeps coming. And probably eats Wheaties and drinks Apple Pie smoothies and shaves with Valvoline." -Dan Steinberg DC Sports Bog

I stop showering at training camp and don't start again until after the super bowl. It's not really to help the team, it's more so that people get in my way.

Rituals are important, very important, when -you- are the main actor. If -you- are going to perform as a player, actor, speaker, soldier, etc whatever your ocupation, you NEED a ritual to prepare for action.

I go over my task inmy mind ahead of time, alone, by myself, in silence, preferably in low light. My performances become a confrmation of the way I saw it in my mind before (Sun Tzu's advice)

It gives you focus, concentration, and attention to detail. High intensity athletes (including some boxers) have very famous rituals.

As a spectator, it might be important to have a ritual, not for luck, because I do not believe in it. But to become a better analyst of game strategy and tactics everytime. An informed and inteligent fan is a better fan in my book. That is why I am a member of this site. I enjoy the insight.
Daniel Snyder has defined incompetence, failure and greed to true Washington Redskins fans for over a decade and a half. Stay away from football operations !!!

I play in a lot of golf scrambles and even though football fans are bad, no one compares to golfers when it comes to rituals.

I've been having a guy tell me for three weeks that "we should have used the "lucky" marker on eighteen". Nevermind the fact that it was a 20 foot triple breaker. If we would have used that 1963 nickel, we'd have made that. At least in his mind.

I like to wear underwear that has the opposing teams colors on it. It's like I'm smashing my ass on them all day.

having played basketball for almost 13 years now, i find its best if i am alone before the game, listening to the likes of Staind, Tool, or Avenged Sevenfold an hour before the game to get me a little worked up while i put on my gear, and then when the shoes go on i listen to Enough by Welbilt to get me in the energized mood. Then i go stretch at halfcourt (nowhere else) and join the team for layup lines.

as for the redskins--whichever way the redskins are going on offense, i point my hat just a little bit that way--i dont know if it actually works, but on many occasions we have scored or made a great play after i adjust my hat that way, so maybe its something? i wear my Ramsey jersey almost every game, last year i alternated between him and Coles, but my Coles jersey has long since vanished into the annals of my closet, and for good reason. other than that, i dont have much else
Sean, may you always rest in peace and look down on us with the same love that we look up to you.
