Concerned about lack of size in our receiving corp

We have speedsters at WR..which is good, I love speed. I still think we need a guy who can out jump a DB and go and get the ball. With Moss..Patten..Jacobs..Thrash, we do not have that. I certainly hope McCants gets more PT. If we had resigned Smoot we could have drafted a tall swift wideout...but ohh well

All the tall swift wideouts from the Draft are HOLDOUTS at the start of camp .... but oh well.

Back on topic:

Gibbs has a good group of WR to work with. True he have a lot of small wideouts, but he has had most of them all off-season and has a pretty good idea of how he'll use them.

It will come down to the scheme that is run when we are in the redzone. Gibbs has Fullbacks on his roster and they are listed as fullbacks. Betts and Portis can contribute inside the 20 running or catching the ball out of the backfield. Others have mentioned our starting TE and HB, they were in the top 5 amoung TD productions by TE combonations last season. I see no reason they won't continue to excel.

This may be a isuse down the road, but at this time we don't no who will be on the final roster (as a WR) and who won't.

Williams is not a bust yet. Give him time. We'll see how much of a bust he's going to be.

IF Ramsey's the starter, your lack of size at wide receiver will not hurt you at all. Size only matters when getting the ball downfield. Ramsey was statistically one of the worst QBs in the league in downfield passing.

Why wouldn't he be? His line couldn't block and he was throwing to Gardner (no speed or hands) and Coles (bad toe and no speed). Manning couldn't have thrown downfield for last year's Skins.

I am a little concerned about the lack of size, especially for our red zone offense where there is less room for the speedy guys to run. McCants and/or Dyson might be able to help here. It will also be necessary for our speedy receivers to be able to get off the line of scrimmage when defenses are playing tight man/bump and run coverage against us. If they get knocked off their routes to easily it will affect the timing in the passing game. But we really needed speed to loosen up the defenses for the running game.

If Dyson helps, I'll eat my shorts, and I still think Gibbs will figure out a way to get rid of McCants. He just doesn't like the guy. This looks see's a phony.

What happened when Steve Spurrier tried to take 3rd string wideouts and start them at #2 or in the slot...Green Anthony...do not even play anymore. Thrash Patten and Dyson are all #3 wideouts. I am not excited at all about our passing game

Having the small receivers makes it easier for teams to match up with us. They might me quick, but NFL Executives aren't drafting slow DBs. I think it was a terrible move by the skins to not pay Smoot the money to resign him. If we resign Smoot we have no need for a Cornerback, we dont draft Rodgers, and Mike Williams falls into our lap. We are going to end up paying Rodgers, an unproven corner, something in the ballpark of what Smoot got. We have been terrible in free agency, we pay too much for players that dont produce, yet we wont pay for guys who have produced on our team. It dont make sense to me.

Sure, I wish McCants had practiced like Art Monk. The Redskins like him well enough that they dropped Gardner and kept McCants.

Nothing I can say will convince the naysayers. We'll just have to all wait and see when the games start. I think our current group of WRs is pretty good. They are fast and they run good routes. Some of them are extremely hard workers and you know Ramsey is spending a lot of time with them working on timing.

Gary Clark and Ricky Sanders were not that tall and Mark Rypien didn't seem to have much trouble finding them and Monk for over 1100 yards each in 1989. Size of a receiver does not matter if the QB throws the ball where it's supposed to go. Size only matters if your QB sucks or isn't that accurate. Ramsey is quite accurate and he'll find his touch on the long ball that he had at times under spurrier.

When you have a QB that knows the offense well, knows the recievers tendancies and the receivers run the routes they are supposed to with some seperation, you are going to make a lot of yards, a whole lot. I have a feeling there are going to be a lot of surprised skins fans and people around the league at how good our Offense is this season....

i am not concerned at all i think speed matters most. if our recievers can get a burning start there will be no need of jumpin over a DB. just give em like 15 yarders and we will do great. and go for the often 40+ yarder more than 4-5 times a game. i dont think DMAC can step it up i hope for taylor jacobs to step it up. hes got some speed too. and he has shown signs of greatness. and kevin dyson? hes just a mentor

I think you got it right there! Depending on how hard these guys work will depend on our success. We must get timing and some familiarity down! These new WR's are new to this sytem, and Patrick. We'll have to expect some growing pains but hopefully we'll work the kinks out before the season starts. It'd be nice to know if these guys are taking their personal times to improve their timing. Im pretty sure Patrick will be able to get the ball to the WRs and these guys can catch!

Back then DBs where much less physical than today. Our small WR corps looks speedy and good on paper, but just about every team in this league has to this day big, pounding, DBs.

I can't figure it out. Half of the people on the board argue that the "don't touch a receiver" rule gives an big advantage to the faster receivers.

The other half says the DB's are bigger, so the receivers need to be bigger.

Is there a contradiction? Which side is right?

Yes, I wish the Redskins had a pair of starting WR's who were fast, taller than 6-2, and heavier than 210 pounds.

Until then, I'll try to remember that watching Gardner was watching an adventure, and that Coles caught only one TD last year.

Well after 5 yards the small guys have a good advantage. Before 5 yeards the big CB's have an advantage if our guys can't beat the jam.

So we've got 4 wideouts that are at least 6 foot tall and 200 pounds, plus our superb TD-catching H-back which makes 5. McCants is a good red-zone threat, Thrash makes tough catches, and Jacobs is fast and expected to be a rising star. The two little guys are fast as hell. As long as Ramsey gets to know them all and gets his timing down I don't see what the problem is. The 'Skins are probably still going to lean heavy on the run since our quick receivers can get downfield now.

My guess is that Gibbs will run different sets of receivers depending on where the Redskins have the ball, and the down, and the distance.

Maybe McCants replaces Patten or Moss inside the 20 or 30. Maybe Jacobs sparkles in camp, and replaces either Moss or Patten anyplace. Maybe Gibbs runs "heavy jumbo", my favorite formation: he puts an OT at TE and a guard at H-back...and throws to the H-back.
