I've heard that the pick is conditional on how well he plays and various notions of what that means generally.
Does anyone have any solid numbers, detail? What if Gardner grabs 100 passes, 12 TD's, and a pro bowl slot?

You can trade the rod jersey for a couple of rarelly used T-shirts. If he plays more than 10 games, you'll get one t-shirt back....

About the trade, he was gonna get cut anyway and getting something for him is a bonus (not to mention free cap space), but I can't seem to take the bad aftertaste of trading a 1st round pick for a 6th rounder in so little time. I hope he does really well, so we get a 5th rounder.

I was wondering that myself. Is it still a sixth rounder no matter how well he plays?
God bless our troops and Joe Gibbs.

(a) Gardner is gone!!! Three cheers!!!

(b) It is only 1:19pm by my computer clock, and this celebratory thread is already up to nine pages!

Can anyone think of a more popular "trade"?

Moss can catch, that justifies his presence on the field. 50/50 doesn't catch, so why is here there?

If this is true, then why doe Gardner have almost 100 more catches than Moss during the same time frame! :hmm:

If a sixth round pick is all we got from the Panthers then they got a steal. A starting quality WR for a 6th rounder.

If some said "Give me a 6th rounder and I will give you a WR that averages 750yrds a year and 5.5 TD" most people would jump on that.

Mark my words, he will have a better year this year then our 2nd best WR.

When Gardner puts up over 1000 yards this season, don't get too upset about it. He's going to an ideal situation for his skillset. He'd have been lucky to get 700 in DC.

Delhomme freelances and tosses the ball up much more than Gibbs would ever allow a QB to do. (That's not a positive or negative comment, but rather a comment on differing philosophies). Gardner will excel there as a #2, grabbing deep balls and circus catches when teams overplay Smith.
This space reserved for BTP......If he ever wins it.

Always like 50/50, I mean Rod Gardner. 50/50 was his nickname around the locker room b/c it was 50/50 whether he would catch the ball. Nice guy just didnt produce like he should have. I just wish we got something in return for him to use for this season.
Prediction: 9-7 in 2005 and just squeezing into the playoffs

Everyone that looks at it as trading a 1st round pick for a 6th is sorely mistaken. Rod was a bust as a first rounder...the FO made a mistake in drafting him that high. He's played more like a decent 4th or 5th rounder. At least we received SOME compensation for him.

Regardless, I hope he does well with Carolina. He seemed like a nice guy that just struggled.

2001 first round WRs (you spot the bust)
Pick Recp / Yards/ Y/C / Total TDs
#8 D. Terrell 128 / 1602 / 12.5 / 9
#9 K. Robinson 213 / 3167 / 14.9 / 12
#15 R. Gardner 227 / 2997 / 13.2 / 22
#16 S. Moss 151 / 2416 / 16.0 / 19
#25 F. Mitchell 90 / 1263 / 14.0 / 5
#30 R. Wayne 221 / 3109 / 14.1 / 23

- Only Robinson and Wayne have more yards than Gardner, and only Wayne has more TDs (1!) (he got 12 last year).
- No one has more receptions than Gardner.
- Waynes QB and Coaching situation has been infinitely better in Indy and you could make a strong case for Robinsons situation as well.
- Gardner has one of the lowest yards per catch, 13.2, the same as Marvin Harrison's. Art Monk's was only 13.7. I'm not comparing Harrison and Monk to Gardner only pointing out that yards per catch doesn't mean squat.

Look I am glad that we got something for him, but I am not going to lie to myself and say that Gardner is a Bust just because he is on the way out!

I wish they had a stat for dropped passes!!!!I have seen Gardner make some great catches but then he will drop a easy one or three. If gardner can get the dropped balls down then he will be a awesome w.r. but the problem is he wanted out and it is just best if he leaves and we take our chances.

Man, watch a friggin game all you Rod lovers. The guy dropped far too many easy balls. He cost us first down after first down, game after game. So what he's got some stats compared to other guys drafted with him. Koren Robinson is as bad is he is. Again, watch a game or two. Rod has great size, he's very athletic and he makes acrobatic catches that make you think he's gonna be a star. But then he opens his mouth and turns into a cancer for the team and he drops balls time after time. Then he turns too late and the ball hits him in the back, or the arm or flies right by him.

Rod is a cancer and he drops or just plain misses more balls than anyone I've ever seen. Thank you Carolina for being so dumb. Nobody wanted Rod, you could have picked him up for nada right after we cut his butt.

I'd like to be the first to announce.... IT'S OFFICIAL!

Rod Gardner passed his physical with the Panthers on Thursday, completing his trade from the Redskins for a sixth-round draft pick.

The move clears $2.1 million of salary cap space for the Redskins, who need the money to sign first-round draft picks Carlos Rogers and Jason Campbell.

Unhappy with his role in Washington's offense, Gardner was given permission to seek a trade in January. It appeared Washington would have to release him until the deal was struck with the Panthers, who have been looking for a replacement for Muhsin Muhammad. Muhammad left as a free agent for the Chicago Bears earlier this offseason.

Gardner was a first-round draft pick in 2001, but he was inconsistent during his time in Washington. His best season came in 2002 when he caught 71 passes for 1,006 yards and eight touchdowns. He had 51 receptions for 650 yards and five touchdowns last year.
