4 points for a field goal

I was watching NFL Europe the other day (I haven't been all year) and learned that a field goal of 50+ yards merits "4" points instead of "3" points. Is that correct?

If so, what are your thoughts of that rule being incorporated in the NFL?

No. I do not want to see Sebastian "Eazy-E" Janikowski leading the league in points scored. Plus, this might lead to rampant steroid abuse from kickers hoping to give their teams an edge.

I voted no. If it aint broke, don't fix it. RS, kickers get tested too.

That's a really interesting question. It would change the whole dynamic of scoring nowadays - with the two point conversion especially. For example, when one team scores two TDs for 14 pts., and the other team scores one TD and two field goals...

I'm not sure about this poll; I guess it would really depend on who our kicker is. I don't seem to recall the Skins making many field goals past 50 yds last year, so my vote would probably be no.

Now that I think of it, I'm not crazy about changing it, because it would basically give certain kickers an advantage...and it would likely create a premium for getting a long-range kicker. Could you imagine a kicker getting a multi-million dollar contract?

And what happens on a 3rd & 8 when the team is 54 yds. from the goal post? Do they simply down it, and hope for the 4 pts.? ...Or do they go for the first down, risk gaining 6 yds., and have to settle for a 48 yd. 3-pointer?

no need to adjust the scoring dynamic. I like a field goal being worth exactly half of a touchdown.

I'd have to say No to this one, because like people earlier said, it would give certian kickers the edge.
All kicks should be worth the same amount of points.

That would ruin football. Then a a TD would only be 2 points more than a FG, which is absurd.

I hope this is just a spur of the moment idea, and not based off rumors from the commish, because the day that happens I would become a Water Polo fan.

It's not a spur of the moment idea at all....nor a rumor. It was just a question I posed because apparently NFL Europe is already doing this.

I was just wondering if that was the "testing ground" for that rule, ya know?

Definitely not. I'm a purist for one, I love football the way it is. Situations like this would be so lame:

A team trails by 4 with under a minute to play at the their opponents 29 yard line. Instead of going for a TD, on 3rd down the QB takes the snap, walks back 4 yards to the 33 and takes a knee, setting up a 50 yard FG try.

Not cool.

Besides when was the last time the Redskins had a K who could hit a 50 yarder?

This would only hurt us.

This wouldnt work, it puts half the kickers in the league at a disadvantage as we speak.

No. A team should be rewarded to cross the line into the end zone. Otherwise, you will end up with a kicking contest.

I like/hate situations where the kicker gets to decide the game during the final seconds of a game. But I would not want football to become a kicking game. Soccer is much better at that.

I voted no, this isn't fantasy football. The NFL needs no more rule changes. They have already ruined defense with the pass interference calls last year, and now this year with no horse collar tackles. I guess it wont be much longer until it is two hand touch because the players are too valuable to get hurt.

No reason to reward offenses that can't get past their opponent's 35 yard line.

I hope that this isn't true with NFL Europe, and I certainly hope that they never even consider it for the American game.

I voted no. Every team would likely keep an extra field goal kicker on the roster. Some real football player would lose a shot to play. You’d end up with a "normal" range kicker and the "+50" kicker on the game day roster.

I don't think the NFL should do anything to make kicking field goals more attractive.

I think they should ban field goals out side of the two minutes before the half and the two minutes before the end of the game. In overtime a field goal should be banned until your second possession.

^^^ ive thought about that also, overtime pisses me off. A " team" is not consisted of offense and kicking game. If a team like the colts got the ball and moved the ball and kicked a field goal or scored in overtime, then it wouldnt be because they are a better team. They would iwn the game because they havea good offense and kicking game, I like college because all aspects of fball teams are tested. Lets say the opposing team won teh toss, then they would win because the colts defense is weak, so therefore the game is decided on a coin and not the better team

Which is why i don't understand why the League doesn't incorporate something like the College overtime into the NFL.
