Payton

Post by HogInBlacksburg »

Jarrett Payton was buried on the depth chart at Miami his entire career (James,Gore,Portis,McGahee). He isn't talked about too much. The highest I have seen him in any Mocks is the 3rd round. Most people have him going in the 4th-6th rounds. He's listed at 6'2" 224 lbs. He is a powerful north/south runner(ala S.Davis). He averaged 5 yds a carry for the season and really came on with over 6 yds a carry in his last 5 games.
If we get a chance later in the draft I would love to see him in B&G this year.
High character, Strong work ethic and...How about his genes??

from what i've heard/read, the apple fell a LONG ways from the tree here. i don't know that much about him, but from what i been able to keep up with, not many people have been impressed by him. i guess it's hard to follow in you fathers footsteps if he is a complete Football god. :)

Hey BigCarter - why do you say that so unequivocally? Just curious if you have some information that we don't :)

Think about it, if he is good and can prove himself, and teams aren't willing to risk much for him, maybe we can get him in the 5th round and attempt to solve our problems at RB that way...

it would be great to have the second coming of 'sweetness' in B&G if it did pan out.

It just seems like for every stud RB taken in the first round like J.Lewis, there's a stud taken in the later rounds like Terrell Davis and even undrafted like Priest Holmes.
Maybe JP could be that sleeper this year. :)

Just someone else to keep an eye on at the combine......

I don't think he's that good. He might with the proper training and coaching. I like him but he's not the best RB available, let's put it that way.

The reason a lot of people are saying he isn't that good is because he was a primary backup throughout his career. Well Brad Johnson played behind Casey Weldon at Florida State, so that means nothing.

He has a lot to learn, but if nothing else I'd invite him to camp. It's in the blood!!!

Watched him play a lot last year..

I watched him in a lot of games this past year (and the title game in 03) and he looked very average. Fumbles, dropped passes, and not all that fast, elusive or powerful. I don't think he was the original starter for Miami this year (I thought that guy got injured), in his senior season. 5 yds a carry probably has more to do with general Miami dominance. Just a fan's opinion though. I hope they go for Greg Jones. And Taylor or Winslow. And start J. Patrick.

If hes available in round 6- or 7 I say definitely give him a shot. I doubt he'll drop that far but if he does then we should take a look at him.

I think the scouting staff can find better running backs in the lower rounds than payton, It would be nice to see him succeed but I doubt it, I as well have seen him play alot and he wasnt too impressive,

and how did you know I wrote that post when it only said guest??

I agree that the Jones' ,Jackson,Perry etc.. are better prospects. JP probably isn't even one of the top ten RB's at this point. But, he hasn't been used up in college and has tremendous potential. He is at best a late round pick for us. It would be nice to get a young guy with tremendous potential for our new staff to work with. Not to mention he would only cost $300k or so.
It says in the link below that he ran a 4.3/40 in h.s. and pressed 300lbs. I guess we'll see what he times out at.
I didn't think he was that fast either. :)

Heres the link with his profile:

your ip address gives it away BC :)

I just think that we need too much help on the DL to draft high at RB when there are respectable retreads in FA and there are possibles that could fall to us in the 5th like Payton...

Especially if we give up the 3rd to get Brunell...

Just an interesting note to people who don't know about potential in 5th rounders - Brunell was a 5th rounder :)
