The Detroit Lions came out the surprise winner in the R.W. McQuarters' sweepstakes Friday by reaching an agreement in principle on a one-year, $1.6 million deal.
The Lions edged four other teams who were trying to sign the former Bears defensive back. The Vikings and Giants came the closest to beating out the Lions. The Redskins and Dolphins were also in the hunt but could only offer the NFL minimum.
In the end, McQuarters preferred going to a team with familiar faces. He played for Lions coach Steve Mariucci when he was a former first-round pick of the 49ers. In Chicago, McQuarters started for former Bears head coach Dick Jauron, who is the current Lions defensive coordinator.
McQuarters, 28, has played seven seasons, two with the 49ers and five with the Bears. In his final season with Chicago, McQuarters showed the versatility of playing cornerback and safety. He's also a punt-returner.
The move by the Lions to sign McQuarters could end their bid to get former Patriots cornerback Ty Law, who visited the team last month. Prior to the draft, the Lions identified cornerback as a need.
"I love Ty Law and I want to think I would still consider him, but right now, with where we're at, I wanted to make sure I'm getting something," Lions president Matt Millen told the Detroit Free Press.

McQuarters signs one-year deal with Lions
NFL.com wire reports
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (June 22, 2005) -- The Detroit Lions have signed former Chicago Bears defensive back R.W. McQuarters to a one-year contract.
The Bears released McQuarters on May 23. The Lions announced the signing June 22 but withheld other terms of the deal, reached earlier this month.
In five seasons in Chicago, McQuarters had 295 tackles and nine interceptions. He switched from cornerback to safety last season and returned punts.
The Bears acquired McQuarters in a 2000 trade with the San Francisco 49ers, who took him in the first round of the 1998 draft. He played his first two seasons under now-Lions coach Steve Mariucci.

"I was on the sideline and guys were talking about the score, and then it hit me -- we won by 21. I came in the locker room and I yelled it out, and immediately I just kind of broke down in tears. Because I miss Sean, you know."
