We watched Cinderella Man.
To make a long story short: Probably the BEST sports movie I have ever watched! Surely the BEST movie I have watched in a long while.
1. It recreates superbly and in a very realistic manner New York City (and Jersey) in the late 20's and early 30's prior and during the Great Depression. I did not know about "Hooverville" (!).
2. I never was in the OLD Madison Square Garden but if I had, I imagine it would have been like that.
3. The story is TRUE, at least the main facts and characters.
4. The music and sound are fantastic.
5. The performances by all main actors are worthy of great recognition.
6. It makes the analogy of a hard life and the meaning of survival as much in sports as it is in life. (This analogy is what sports is all about to me).
7. The story recreates the contrast of real successes and failures by several characters. It is NOT sugar-coated.
8. The behaviour of the media has not changed throughout history, it seems.
Do not go if you are looking for a Rocky-type or Disney sugar-coated story. My wife fought tears during several stages of the movie. But if you are FED UP as I am with people in sports that DOES NOT KNOW OR WANT TO KNOW about sacrifice in sports and life through thick and thin, there is no better movie to watch.
I wish ALL athletes and our Redskins would play "for milk". Go and watch it. You will know what I mean.
P.S. This is a thread dedicated to Welch who loves history and sports history in particular, all NY posters, and BossHog who loves boxing.
