Redskins Add Dyson to WR Corps

The Redskins have signed free agent wide receiver Kevin Dyson, the team announced on Monday.
Dyson, who worked out at Redskins Park on Monday, adds plenty of experience to a wide receiver corps that has several new faces, including free agent pickups Santana Moss and David Patten.

Kevin Dyson
Dyson, 6-2 and 212 pounds, was a first-round draft pick of the Tennessee Titans in 1998. He spent the first five years of his career with the Tennessee Titans. He is perhaps most notable for scoring on the "Music City Miracle" touchdown in the Titan's AFC Wild Card playoff game against the Buffalo Bills in 1999.

In 2003, Dyson signed with Carolina. A year later, he signed with San Diego, but was released prior to the start of the regular season.

During his career, Dyson has appeared in 59 games with 54 starts and amassed 2,325 yards on 178 catches and 18 touchdowns. Dyson has caught eight passes for 82 yards in postseason play and has played in two Super Bowls.

Dyson left Utah as the college's all-time leader in catches with 192. He ranked second with 2,726 receiving yards and fourth with 18 touchdowns. He was MVP of the 1998 Senior Bowl.

With Laveranues Coles traded to the New York Jets and Rod Gardner not expected to return next season, the Redskins have revamped their wide receiver corps with a mixture of speed and experience. Moss, Patten and Dyson join holdovers Darnerien McCants, Taylor Jacobs and James Thrash as the team's primary wide receivers.

The Redskins also worked out free agent wide receiver Antonio Freeman on Monday. Freeman is a 10-year NFL veteran who has spent most of his career with the Green Bay Packers. Last year, he spent training camp with Miami but was released prior to the start of the regular season.

Is he any good anymore?

I'll tell you when the contract comes out. If it's vet minimum with no signing bonus, than he's still good.

Nah, after that time when I passed out and woke up and still didn't have all the transformers I wanted, I gave up on that breath-holding stuff.

As for Dyson, I think he is a decent veteran WR who can help mentor young guys and make plays when necessary.

This means that both ends of the Music City Miracle will have played for the Redskins.

Not big on this pickup. There is a reason why nobody wanted this guy.

Greg Williams knows this guys talent. I love this pickup. He appears to be the right kind of guy that will fit into this system. He will not have to be the number one guy, but he definitely will not catch a 4 yard ball when we need 5 yards for the first down as we all saw last season.

Dyson has the experience we need in the receiving corps. Thrash is basically a special teams stud, so he fits nicely in the WR mix.

Remember there are no guaranteed contracts in the NFL. If he does not get a signing bonus it cost us nothing unless he makes the team, plus we would get the veterin exemption.

It could be a good pick-up if he has anything left, but I think our current group will outplay him and he will not make the team.

What do you want..4 starting receivers? we only use 2 and sometimes 3 wideouts. I think this is a great pickup.

Well it certainly doesn't take anything away for our wide reciever unit either. And there is the outside chance that he actually plays well.

What's the worst case scenario? He sucks and we cut him.

Zero risk involved - never a bad move.

Dyson had a decent season a few years back.

Not a 1000 yard guy, but I think he could be special teams. I dunno. He's decent.

There was more sadness than happiness when I found out about this. I mean, he's good and all, and if he is getting the league minimun thats all cool. But I just want to let our guys proove themselves.

I mean I want to see Jacobs, Thrash, McCants out there and give them a chance. And when we keep adding sturdy veterans to come in as a #2 or #3, that just bumps Jacobs or McCants of the field.

But I'll wait to see his contract before I make a fuss out of this.

I hate to sign a guy and have no intention for him to make the team. Im not saying thats what Joes intention was. Id like to see him make a team so that he can continue his career.

Also I want to see our guys step up... They have to step up the coaches can't go out there and catch for them. Maybe the coaches werent impressed at the OTA's.

Sure Dyson is no Mike Williams but we added another guy who almost guarantees a catch if Ramsey puts it where it needs to be.

I don't think TJ has anything to worry about at this point. He's had a lot of press this offseason and all signs point to Gibbs & Co. giving him a fair shake.

McCants on the other hand... I'm not so sure. I'd rather have McCants on the team over Dyson because he's younger. But he needs to be impressive in camp. Dyson is the same type of possession receiver that DMac is. Gibbs might be trying to light a fire under him. Who knows.

Who is going to be the odd man (or men) out? Moss, Patten, Jacobs and Thrash are all a lock to make the team. How many receivers does Gibbs usually keep? 5 or 6? I'm really not sure.

Competition folks.

When you have guys competing hard for positions, it's ALWAYS good for the team.

Dyson is a guy that can come in and rejuvenate his career, or he could just be the guy that pushes McCants or Jacobs to step up that bit more.

Either one is good for the Washington Redskins.

And as has been pointed out... if there's no signing bonus attached or it's tiny, it's a no-brainer... you bring him in and give him a shot.

Sheesh... some of you will complain about anything.

I don't think we sign guys who have no chance of making the team. The only exception might be an extra QB. Even an extra QB has a chance to make the practice squad or doing well enough to catch on somewhere else.
Go Skins!!!
I was reading in the paper today about this dwarf that got pick pocketed. How could anyone stoop so low?

I'm with Boss...I really like this signing, nothing but a positive if you ask me.

I think Dyson is the kind of guy where you just cant tell if he's gonna bust out or not... he has it in him, but he'll be above avg one season and maybe below the next. Either way, he is a guy we should give a chance to.

I think its hes a great pickup. He might have just enough in him left to either make jacobs and mcants step it up or just enough in him to get back into he career. He didnt cost much, its just more competition for our WR Corps
