Coles is a loss, but we got another speedy WR in Santana Moss. Gardner doesn't have many fans here on the board due to his inconsistent butterfingers. Meanwhile Patten is a very consistent hard worker. Thrash is a reliable WR that'll take a hit. Gibbs said he will be using McCants more, and Jacobs will likely step up. Oh and Thrash and Jacobs are about 6'. Hardly smurfs.

I think one of either Molinaro or Wilson will go. I remember reading that one of the two was more versatile, while the other could only play left tackle. I know this would be 2 cuts from the O-line, but I'm trying to think of guys that aren't absolutely necessary or could be easily upgraded.

I don't think any offensive linemen will be cut. Since we just signed Raymer why would we then cut him? The Skin's will let all the o-line come to camp and fight for job's, then the cuts will come.

Barrow, Morten and Gardner will get the axe.

While it's possible they may cut a kicker, it's more likely they come to camp with 2 so that if one of them get's hurt the other is already here. Plus you can get more special teams practice work in without wearing out one kicker.

Rod Gardner will not be a June 1st casualty. He is in the final year of his contract, and therefore we could have cut him at any time up 'til now with the exact same effect on our salary cap as if we were to wait until after June 1st to cut him. We will hold him until we absolutely have to have the cap space, or someone makes us a reasonable offer.

No we will cut him tomrow, we were waiting untill June to find trading partners, now we can get some cap back because if no ones traded by now a trade is unlikely

Padawan -
1. A Jedi apprentice, assigned to accompany a Jedi Knight while learning the ways of the Force. Similar to a journeyman in a feudal guild.

2. apprentice, student, person-in-training.
Someone that needs to be schooled.
Not knowledgeable.
An insult to someone who claims to know more than you.

Update - Barrow may not go after all

Post by Redskin in Canada »

Redskins likely to drop Morton

By Jody Foldesy
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

The Washington Redskins apparently aren't ready to give up on linebacker Mike Barrow just yet, but return man Chad Morton could be on his way out when the post-June 1 period of free agency opens late today.

Although Redskins officials remain mum about their plans, a source familiar with the club's thinking said Barrow likely won't be released until the team gets a better gauge on his rehabilitation from acute tendinitis in his knee.

Barrow, who signed a six-year, $15.1 million deal last spring but didn't play a down in 2004, is in Arizona trying to build strength in his atrophied leg. There has been considerable speculation he would be released this week, but that apparently isn't the plan.

The cut certainly could come later, though, because his return is by no means assured. For now Redskins officials seem willing to take a closer look if and when he gets healthy.

Morton might not get that chance. Still rehabbing from a torn ACL suffered in October, Morton seems likely to exit in coming days. The move would be a bit surprising because it offers the Redskins relatively little savings ($540,000) compared to what they could gain by releasing Barrow ($1.74 million).

Washington needs salary cap space at some point this summer to sign first-round draft picks Carlos Rogers and Jason Campbell. Cutting Morton won't be enough, but the Redskins also will part with wide receiver Rod Gardner (a $2.1 million savings) at some point in coming months.

Morton was signed away from the New York Jets as a restricted free agent in 2003, a move that involved a high-profile arbitration case. In Washington, his production has been modest. He tied for 10th in the NFL in kickoff returns (23.4 yards) in 2003, scoring one touchdown, but fell to just 22.4 yards last season. On punts, he never looked comfortable.

The Redskins apparently are prepared to move forward with other options in the return game. Ladell Betts led Washington with a 23.0-yard average last season on kickoffs, while Antonio Brown (8.9 yards) and James Thrash (8.5) both put up solid numbers on punts.

In addition, Washington remains in the hunt for cornerback R.W. McQuarters, who has done well returning kicks. McQuarters was believed to be visiting the Miami Dolphins yesterday after taking trips to Washington and the New York Giants last week. It is unclear whether he has others scheduled.

The post-June 1 period, which technically begins after the NFL's close-of-business at 4 p.m. today, permits teams to shed big contracts in a cap-friendly way. League-wide, there are expected to be fewer post-June 1 cuts this year because clubs have become better about managing the salary cap.

Note -- The Redskins signed running back Jonathan Combs, an undrafted rookie out of Texas College who tried out at the recent rookie minicamp. Combs takes the roster spot of safety Cory Hall, who abruptly quit the team Thursday after signing two days earlier.

This is what I wanted to read. I hope this possible assumption by Foldesy turns out to be true. I really don't want to give up on Barrow yet. I want to see him in a Redskins uniform. He is VERY talented and just needs time to play. I only would want him to be cut if he is outperformed by the rest of the linebacking corps. So far that hasn't happened because of his injury. Until then, I want him on this team.

Gibbs, Redskins Eye June 1 Cuts
By Gary Fitzgerald
Redskins.com
May 31, 2005

Personnel officials around the NFL will be scouring the waiver wire on Wednesday as the post-June 1 phase of the offseason gets underway. June 1 cuts of veteran players have become a staple on the NFL calendar as teams seek salary cap relief.

Head coach Joe Gibbs said team officials are reevaluating the Redskins' roster while keeping tabs on other teams' players who may become available in the coming weeks.

"When we approach [June 1], you try and look over what's best for the Redskins," Gibbs said. "You have to make decisions in there sometimes. As for specifically discussing a player, I don't think I should do that. As a matter of fact, the league doesn't want you to do that. So it's all up in the air."

One player whose status with the Redskins is uncertain is Rod Gardner. The fifth-year wide receiver was granted permission to seek a trade at the end of last season and Gibbs has said that he is "skeptical" of Gardner returning to the team in 2005.

Gardner has not attended the Redskins' voluntary workouts or Organized Team Activity practices that started May 17.

It's evident that team officials would prefer to get value for Gardner, a former first-round draft pick, in a trade. But as the 2005 season approaches, both the team and Gardner appear to be running out of options.

The caliber of available players post-June 1 has declined league-wide in recent years as teams become more savvy managing the salary cap.

In 2004, the Redskins waived a trio of players shortly after June 1: linebacker Jeremiah Trotter, who last year was in a similar situation to Gardner, offensive lineman Dave Fiore and running back Trung Canidate.

Should the Redskins release a player this year, it could be so that the team has salary cap room to complete rookie contracts with the six draft picks or to add a free agent to the roster.

The Redskins brought in free agent cornerback R.W. McQuarters for a visit last week and Gibbs expressed an interest in signing the seven-year veteran formerly with the Chicago Bears.

McQuarters left Redskins Park without a contract and was expected to visit several other teams.

"I think he's going to consider his options," Gibbs said. "We have a good feeling [about him]. We'll just have to see what happens."

i agree. i don't get this fixation with chandler????? the freakin 49ers cut him. anyway.

hall is the man. had the injury bug last year, but i actually thought we had a good shot at three points everytime he stepped on the field. he's real consistant when he's in.

I would be very suprised if they cut Barrow after all this time - unless they know something about his injury that will preclude them from giving him the opportunity to show why they were so high on him last year. I am hoping we get to see this guy play - he could be a key addition.

As far as the kickers are concerned they should both be here for a while.

Morton and Gardner are probably not going to be around much longer.

by the way! - welcome to the site 56 36
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)
