Only for the Canadians in this Board - Do not read otherwise

Post by Redskin in Canada »

Congratulations to our London Ontario Skins fans in this board for the Memorial Hockey Cup.

My Moosheads were eliminated by Oceanic but, to be frank and honest, I was still cheering for our local Haligonian sensation Sydney Crosby against you guys. London 4, Oceanic 0. No small achievement.

Congratulations to our London crowd!

If we could only match it with a skins SuperBowl, it would be just dandy, eh?

Thanks RiC! We are pretty darn proud of our boys (London Knights)! They had an incredible season with only (I think) 9 losses (two of which were in playoffs) and a clean sweep in the Memorial Cup; then a shut-out in the final against Ramouski -- how fitting. This past week of hosting the Memorial Cup has been incredible for our city as well! The Knights were even given a parade this evening -- these guys are like 16-18 mostly, how awesome is that! (Actually, I guess it's very akin to the support shown highschool football in the States.)

I assume since Sidney Crosby is a local boy, you watched the games? Man, our new arena (the John Labatt Center) was ROCKING! Just incredible to see and experience! "They" said that upwards of 1 million people watched that last game!

It was an awesome season for Junior Hockey this year in an NHL-starved Canadian environment! Brings the joy of simply playing (and winning  ) back to the game (no money, no contracts, no Collective Bargaining Agreement).

Thanks for the Shout Out, RiC. Those boys gave us a heck of season!

Dongrats on the victory Londonites. I have heard all aboot the season from BossHoser, eh. With no NHL, even some of us Americans missed it. As a Caps fan, I have missed hockey since Ted Leonsis bought the team. :-(

Since most of you don't know or care about hocky... I won't boire you with many details... but the Knights finished up the best season of junior hockey EVER... ANYWHERE with their mem cup win. Just a couple of gawdy statistics for those that do like hockey:

A Knights to Remember

3-0-0 Preseason
59-7-2 Regular season
16-2 OHL playoffs
4-0 memorial Cup
----------------------
82-9-2

These numbers are ridiculous when you look at them carefully.... and only two of their losses were at home.

They opened the season 29-0-2 to break the junior record undefeated streak.

They only had 125 goals scored against them in the reg season cmpared to 310 goals scored.

Truthfully, I could write pages on the prowess of this team... but the fact that in the last game of the year against the powerhouse 'offensive juggernaut' Rimooski team... with everything on the line... they shut them out. Sidney who? Crosby is great and all but Corey Perry will have a better NHL career. Crosby was shut down by London effectively and quite easily... so much so, that he was getting really, really frustrated... first time anyone has ever seen that. he better get used to it if he wants to play in the bigs.

Former NHL players Dale and Mark Hunter have re-built this team from a dismal position (just 3 years ago). They deserve full marks for their performance and deserve as many accolades as the players do. Dale won coach of the year for the second consecutive season and could liely walk on to an NHL team if he so desired.

Congratulations to the team, and a heart-felt appreciation for helping a bunch of Canadians forget all about a little old thing called the NHL.

Ahem! Ahem!

Let's not get carried away here. Time will tell of course.

The cast of characters around the Knights was better. They prepared bertter for the final game. They deserved the win. From the ONE win against Crosby to an NHL prediction like that there is a LOOOOONG way.

OK BossHog, ANY bets about who will be drafted first? You know who I know WILL be first. ANY bets, Please...

He won't be drated first if he's a free agent like they were talking about yesterday.

Thanks for the condescension  I've probably seen Crosby play at least 40 times this year alone... think that's enough to base a judgement on? Perry even more.

My judgement doesn't come from watching them play a couple of games... it comes from watching 100's of hockey games each and every year. it comes from having watched them both play all year long in similar scenarios and being able to compare them side-by-side. Crosby is more talented... sure... everyone knows it... no stunning revelation. Doesn't always mean jack... ask Alexander Daigle. Everybody points to Crosby's points prowess and says he's a can't miss prospect, but Daigle's numbers were nearly identical.

Perry is a great all-around player... much more in the mold of a Vincent Lecavalier. When they get to the NHL, Crosby will have to try and learn to play like a man... Perry will just have to settle in. Perry shellacked a couple of guys in fights in the playoffs... he can look ater himself... he has great power forward potential. Crosby got his panties in a bunch and lost his composure in the final... frustrated, man-handled and swallowed completely by the checking of the Knights. now I presume you watched the game so you know that Perry was bothered even more... at least they tried to bother him... but they couldn't rattle him. Not even a total sucker punch to the mouth could put him off of his game... and what did the Knights get for Perry's composure... an early 1-0 lead. The Oceanic tried all game long to put Perry off his game but in the end, he was as dominant as he has been for the entire season and playoffs. As impressive as all of Crosby's stats were... I'm not sure anything is as impressive as a 22 game point scoring streak in a 22 game playoff season. Perry played best when it counted most.

Crosby played well too, don't get me wrong. But in the battle of the Titans twice last week... Perry won both battles.

In my opinion, that make you feel better, Perry's game is more condusive to the jump to the NHL. Like Lecavalier... it will take him some time to become the dominant player that he eventually will be, but he will be effective from the very start.

To me Crosby's like Paul Kariya... great player... but he will need the right situation to succeed.

My 2 cents

You mean in all the talk we have had about the London Knights, you never mentioned that Dale Hunter was the coach?

Hunter is top 3 in my favorite players, behind only Rod Langway and Scott Stevens. He was the true blue collar player. Gave 200% on every play in every game, no matter the score, no matter if it was the first game of the season or the first game of the playoffs.

Sounds like maybe some of that has rubbed off on his team.

There is no question that we are talking about two GREAT players here.

With no NHL several of us followed Junior hockey more than we would have otherwise. While I can not argue to have watched "hundreds of games". I have seen Crosbie play. Some of the things you say about Crosbie remind me more aboiut a certain guy called Gretzky than a guy called Kariya. If I remember correctly, Wayne himself said so. I trust his judgment a lot too.

I have no doubt that both players will succeed in the NHL. But I thought that euphoria of the victory led you be carried away a bit. I understand it. The victory is well deserved.

But I notice with interest that you did not accept the bet IF both are available for the draft.

The Hunter clan is well respected. Interestingly, more now as managers and coaches than as players, which is something to be said. BUT, respectfully, there have been other far more acomplished players than them. No disrespect, just my opinion.

What is there to bet on? Did I suddenly lose my marbles? I could understand a bet if Perry was draft eligible but it isn't like there's any question that Crosby will go first...

... Daigle went first overall too... ahead of Pronger, Kariya, Arnott, Koivu, Bertuzzi, Niedermayer, Gratton, Jonsson, Kozlov, Allison, Deadmarsh

Crosby ain't no Gretzky IMO... not even close. I guess only time will tell.

... and the way things are going with the NHL... there's no telling how much time that will be.

I think you misread me....I said "favorite" not best.

Lemeuax (sp) is a great player, but certainly not my favorite. Guy that big should be able to take a hit without crying like a baby.

ESPN just pulled out its money. Other advertisers are considering their options according to the CBC news earlier in the morning.

http://www.cbc.ca/story/sports/national ... 50527.html

If both sides only knew how much fire they are playing with. It may take years to repair the damage IF there is in the future an NHL as we knew it in the past.

You fell for it brother. Nothing like saying to somebody (particuarly a US citizen) do not bother, only for Canadians to attract their attention. Look at the number of hits. If it had read "hockey" or "Memorial Cup" this thread would have been dead by now.

It was not my intention to get this result. It just worked this way I guess. Good to know though
