Redskins Sign RB Combs
By Gary Fitzgerald
Redskins.com
May 31, 2005

Jonathan Combs
The Redskins have signed free agent running back Jonathan Combs, the team announced on Monday.
Combs takes the roster spot previously held by defensive back Cory Hall, who was released last week.

Combs, a 5-9, 230-pound undrafted rookie out of Texas College, worked out for the Redskins in late April and early May as part of the team's Rookie Camp.

Combs, a native of Houston, was the leading rusher at Texas College each of the last two seasons. He has played tailback and fullback in his career.

Depth at RB is a necessity in this league. Look at what Kansas City and Carolina endured last year. If they would have not had a great backup then the team would have done squat. This is a big bruiser type of guy. Gotta have someone that hits as hard as he gets hit.

I think this addition is merely to spur Portis, Betts, etc. to work harder in camp. I doubt he will even make the team, but competition will always make people train harder.

He could also be a gem, Im glad that we're bringing in a surplus of people. Who could turn out to be a better back than Portis, though thats not likely. Competition is a great thing, and we should always have our eyes open for depth and talent.

It'd be nice if you quoted the statements you're reffering to.

I believe that Portis does need help in some areas. Portis simply is not a bruising back that can push a pile like a Jamal Lewis. On goaline situations Im not sold that Portis can push it in there. Now thats not really his fault. If the hole is there he can hit it, the question is just how good will our o-line be? We need someone who in spite of how good our line is can push would be tacklers back into the endzone.

Im sorry but Portis doesn't have the size to do that. Hopefully with improved play from Ramsey and our line, Portis will have long plays for TD's.

They probably signed him to push Betts and the other RBs, but I highly doubt the staff is trying to push Portis to work harder, the guy was a workhorse last year they know he will put the time in...

Man, you guys haven't picked up the pattern? These kids are all bruisers... they are looking for someone who can consistently move the pile in short yardage... it has nothing to do with Portis, or even Betts... It has to so with the Red Zone running game.

I'm surpised we didn't sign him around the time of the rookie workouts. I saw his pic on Redskins.com in the Undrafted Free Agent Tryout gallery and I was really impressed with the shape he was in.

I'm glad we signed him.

I like this signing. Competition in camp is going to be great to watch!

I envy the lucky ones that can attend

This guy looks to stir up some heated competition in camp. Maybe one of these backs can emerge to be that pile-moving RB we need....

Who said that? No one (at least most of us) is saying Portis needs help - just that the more competition, the better.

Take Tiger Woods, for example. He is frequently quoted as saying that there is never a certain point that he is trying to reach in his game. Rather, using and sustaining his exceptional talent for the game is a lifetime goal - he is always trying to be better. Which I believe could turn out to be the case here - Portis doesn't need much help; but just like every other athlete, he can always be better.

I addition to looking for back up running backs that can move the pile in short yardage situations. Fullbacks, linebackers and Tight Ends make great special teams players they usually have a good cobination of size and speed for coverage.

Texas College announced today the Washington Redskins signed former Steers running back Jonathan Combs at Redskins Park to a free agency contract. Combs apparently caught Redksins coach Joe Gibbs eye at a rookie camp held during the first week of May. Combs was part of the inaugural football team that was brought back to Texas College two years ago aftar a forty-year absence.

"This is a great day for Texas College and the city of Tyler," said school president Dr. Billy Hawkins, "and another historical event for this great college."

Hawkins said Combs has been training with former Redskins great Darrell Green for the last month.

As far as I am concerned if he has been training with Darrell Green that is good enough for me.
