Coach Joe Gibbs was positively bubbling about the commitment of his players during offseason workouts and the just-started OTAs, which raised an interesting question.

"Our players have had great offseason work," Gibbs said. "That's where it shows up, because it is voluntary. I used to say in the old days, we had 55 offseason workouts. We kept track of them. Art Monk made 52, 53, 54. Some guys made 18, 19, 20, and the writing's on the wall. You know what you've got in (the first) guy, and you know what you've got in the (other one), no matter how gifted he is."

So what does that mean about safety Sean Taylor, who has missed every single workout this offseason? Taylor hasn't even returned Gibbs' calls, may or may not be seeking a contract extension, and is the only Redskin still unexcused from voluntary workouts at Redskin Park.

"He doesn't fit in that group right now," Gibbs admitted. "It's a disappointment. We've got a bunch of guys working themselves silly here trying to build something, and then you've got a guy who's missing it. That's not a good deal for us.

"He's a gifted player. So many times in sports, you're saying, 'How do I reach that guy there?'"

In essence, it sounds like Gibbs and his staff are giving Taylor a little rope for now because he's young and might be convinced at some point of the offseason's value. And then there's obviously Taylor's talent, which is so immense that he can, for now, dictate the terms of his schedule without fear of retribution.

"I certainly don't consider him a lost cause," Gibbs said. "He's a dynamic player, a great player. But this has been a big disappointment for us."

Gibbs said he expects Taylor to be on hand for the June 17-19 minicamp, the lone mandatory activity in a long offseason of voluntary work.

NOTES, QUOTES

While S Sean Taylor continues to test his coaches' patience by working out in South Florida, the Redskins couldn't be more thrilled with the attitude of LB Marcus Washington, who is emerging as a team leader just one year into his stay with the club.

Washington recently underwent surgery to remove a benign cyst from his tailbone, but coaches couldn't keep him off the field in the weeks that followed. Just days after the surgery, he was at Redskin Park watching a rookie minicamp, and lately he has been pushing back much more quickly than anticipated.

"Marcus Washington is probably one of the more amazing guy's I've worked with," coach Joe Gibbs said. "You talk about somebody you've got to hold out — the guy is chomping at the bit, he's going out on the field, he's doing things he probably shouldn't be doing.

"Finally they cleared him to do individual work, and today I looked up and he's in the team work, running all around, giving guys chest bumps. He loves it. Lots of times guys play football because they're gifted and somebody told them they ought to play. Other guys love it. He loves it."

—Washington hired former TE Don Warren, a star during coach Joe Gibbs' first stint with the club, as a pro scout. The move was part of a reorganization of the personnel department, in which pro scout Louis Riddick was promoted to pro personnel director and pro chief Scott Campbell shifted to college scouting director.

Gibbs was excited to have Warren, who had been coaching football and baseball at an area high school, back in the fold.

"He was a great Redskin," Gibbs said. "He was always there. He made great preparation. He was everything you wanted in a football player."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "It's been interesting to me who's been standing out. You're watching them and it kind of develops over time. There's going to be some surprises in there. It's the thing that stimulates you as a coach." — Coach Joe Gibbs on his players in OTAs.

I am talking about the use/misuse of commas. Check out the Campbell thread started by batman2k5 and then the comment by gambit about Sean Taylor.

Man I wouldn't be suprised to see us be a giant sleeper this year. Everyone in the news and media is saying "Oh man, they have holes, their not doing well" Maybe for once we will overacheive and show these guys....

If we make the playoffs this year the media won't know WHAT to do. Then they'll be all on our jock again.

CLINTON PORTIS WIL NEVER WORK IN GIBBS SYSTEM first off i love portis i am his biggest fan in the world, but his 200 pounds. so the type of rb gibbs system is for is for big 230 pound plus hard runners, portis is not that. next portis is a one cut them go rb, thats what he did at miami thats whay he did at denver, make one cut back and run to day light. Gibbs running system with the retarded counter tres needs for thr rb to wait for the whole to open .good luck with dockerys 5.5 /40 slow fat self and randy thomas is nto a good run blocker. i remeber the cowboys game where glover bitch slaped thomas the whole game. i dont see portis haven more than 7 rushing Tds, for the redskins. devner broncos o line is just great magic put any one behind them and 1000 yards is automatic the end of stroy next, redskins front office got suckers twice byt the same team.

batman... you've been warned repeatedly for using profanity in your posts... you don't appear to have heeded our previous warnings... perhaps some time off will.

We expect everyone to follow the rules, I see no reason to give you special treatment. You are suspended... your post was deleted. Enjoy the time off.

I think it is a mistake to "categorize" Gibbs as a coach who needs certain players of a "type" to "fit" his so called "scheme". IMO Joe was always a master at adapting the players he had to be successful. In "todays" NFL I think we will see this again this year. But this year it's not an "adaption" at half time, now we are going to see Joe come back with a game plan to suit his receivers, his backs and his offensive line. I also think that Joe B will have that line doing things to suit that "change" also.

This is going to be a good year offensively for this team and hopefully the other aspects also improve.
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

This proves ignorance isn't bliss.

Listen. In case you've been under a rock for the past year (which obviously by your spelling, you must have been.), Gibbs is adjusting the System to fit Portis. MORE ZONE BLOCKING?

Thank you, now um...

Would you like ketchup or hot sauce with that Crow?

How can you classify yourself as a fan batman? Read all of the great posts that help explain the fact that the Redskins are trying to move in the right direction. It has been 13 years of garbage. It can not just turn around in one year. But Gibbs is paving the way for football dominance again. We all just need to support our team.

As far as Portis, season stats will look like this 1300 yds rushing, 400 yds receiving, 12 total td's, and will have 10-15 "big plays" this year.

Not only that, but isnt a fan supposed to actually " like " the team, this guy just trashes the redskins day in and day out
" But you should've seen Joe (Gibbs) when they said he couldn't coach anymore...his chest puffed out and said..i dont care what it takes, were not leaving here without another ring." Coach Joe Bugel

Didn't Joe Washington lead the 'Skins in rushing in Gibbs' first year, something like 900+ to Riggins' 700. Joe was under 200 lbs. It's not the size that counts.
