RW could be a nice addition to the team, but he will be a role player IF he makes the team. The players we have in the secondary are solid and McQuarterswill have his work cut out for him if he signs with Washington and "the nation's defense"

Fred Who??? Cornerback went from a position of need to a position of greed in a few short weeks. If we sign R.W. we will have 4 capable starters at DB. I think GW has some wrinkles up his sleeve. Both Cory Hall and RW are not mere special team contributers.

Our Nickle package must have some beast like blitz packages to need this many good corners. Man I can't wait till pre season. Look at all of these backups we will get to look at in Pre-season. Almost as exciting as a reg. season game.

With or without McQuarters I see the secondary as the strongest unit on the team (yes, even better than the LBs)

I still think we should give him a long look tho bc he could be a nice guy to have in nickel and dime packages as well as on "teams"

Redskins look at ex-Bear

By Jody Foldesy
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

The Washington Redskins yesterday eyed another addition to their defensive secondary as former Chicago Bears cornerback RW McQuarters visited Redskin Park, but no signing appeared imminent.
McQuarters, a first-round draft pick by San Francisco in 1998, when current Redskins vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato headed up 49ers scouting, was released by the Bears on Monday. Over seven NFL seasons McQuarters has started 58 games, including 14 last season with Chicago.
The Redskins already have acquired one veteran defensive back this week, signing safety Cory Hall on Tuesday.
McQuarters, 28, could add experience and depth to the Redskins' reserve cornerbacks. The club, which plans to open the season with Shawn Springs and Walt Harris starting, used the draft's ninth overall pick on Carlos Rogers and otherwise has options like Garnell Wilds, Rufus Brown and Ade Jimoh.
Another potential benefit of obtaining McQuarters might come on special teams. He has returned punts and kickoffs, averaging a career-high 12.2 yards on punts in 2003. The Redskins remain uncertain in both areas, largely because Chad Morton was modestly effective the past two seasons and still is recovering from a torn ACL.
McQuarters was scheduled to make $3.05 million this season with the Bears, who traded a conditional pick to the 49ers in 2000 to obtain him. That hefty salary, combined with a dispute with coach Lovie Smith last season and Chicago's desire to test younger players, reportedly led to his release.
It remains unclear how much interest McQuarters is drawing around the league. Among other teams who might have him visit are the New York Giants.

Giants | May Setup a Visit with McQuarters - from www.KFFL.com
Wed, 25 May 2005 22:42:53 -0700

The Washington Times reports the New York Giants may schedule a visit with free agent CB R.W. McQuarters (Bears) if he is not signed by the Washington Redskins.

Darn it! I don't want the Gints to have him....we gotta get this guy...he's great for depth and not too bad at PR!

Greetings from NYC: Since we drafted Rodgers there is no real need for McQuarters unless he signs for the veteran minimum. Defensive back/Kick returner is not a position that needs to be upgraded at the moment!

Yep and that's all any defense needs is one rookie CB.

Batman, are you kidding? Seriously. Walt Harris is definatly better than MCQuarter. McQuarters was cut b/c he wouldnt restructure his contract and also he played irratically. I'm just concerned about this pickup. But thats just my opinion.

Really? You think McQuarters is worse than Harris? I don't agree with that at this point...but we'll see during the season!

I do. McQuarters is a risky player. He jumps at the possible pickoff and gets burned alot. I watched a lot of the Bears games b/c my old roommate last year was a bears fan and we bet some pretty good $$$ on the final season w/l record. Yes, i won but MC's a type of guy that likes to play how he plays and not what is expected of him in the defensive play thats called.

Well...it's good to be agressive sometimes. Plus if he does get burned.....we have STaylor to pop the ball out anyway....

I dont want any reciever catching any passes. I could care less if we dont get any interceptions (except for my fantasy team) if we just knock passes down left and right. If they are going to catch a ball i want it to be no more than 2 yards. Also, MC isnt that good in press coverage.

Our defense IS good but....allowing no passes other than 2 yard passes? That's a little tough, don't ya think? That would be GREAT but never going to happen. I'm guessing you were speaking figuratively there (hyperbole).

Redskins Work Out DB McQuarters
By Gary Fitzgerald
Redskins.com
May 26, 2005

The Redskins worked out free agent cornerback R.W. McQuarters this week and the team is considering signing the seven-year veteran formerly with the Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers.
"We had a good visit," head coach Joe Gibbs said on Thursday. "We think he would fit in at a number of places. He's very versatile. He's played corner and safety.

R.W. McQuarters
"I think he's going to consider his options. We're trying to give him a feel for what the Redskins are about, but we'll see what happens down the road."

Along with the Redskins, McQuarters is expected to visit several other teams before making a decision.

McQuarters was released by the Chicago Bears on May 23.

McQuarters, 5-10 and 195 pounds, is a seven-year veteran who was a first-round draft choice (28th overall) of the San Francisco 49ers in the 1998 NFL Draft. He was traded to the Bears prior to the 2000 season and played under current Redskins coaches Greg Blache and Dale Lindsey in Chicago.

"Our coaching staff knows a lot about him," Gibbs said. "So we think we have a good feel for him."

During his career, McQuarters has appeared in 99 games with 58 starts and recorded 386 tackles (288 solo), 10 interceptions and two sacks. Last season, he started 14 of 16 games and amassed 80 tackles, two interceptions and eight pass deflections.

McQuarters also excelled as the Bears' primary punt return specialist last season, running back 44 punts for 435 yards and one touchdown.
