The National Anthem!

Post by stwasm »

I'm not sure if this has been covered before, but what can we do to keep people from screaming, "Ohhhhhhh!!!!!!" during the national anthem. First of all, it's VERY disrespectful. Secondly, it's small-town and we're a big city. AND, it's too frickin' Baltimore! Folks, please don't do that! :explode:

Since I don't go to games I don't see this happening... at what point do people scream this?

That sounds very annoying, but could you describe it in more detail?

Moving to the lounge....and I can't stand when anyone disrespects the national anthem. I don't like people who talk during it or refuse to remove their hats, or poeple who sing it badly.

HOORAH!!!

Neither can I. What's worse is on our installation, people will actually run full sprint into buildings when colors are sounded. I've (after colors, of course) been known to chase them down and question WTF?

Have also chased officers down who refuse to return my hand salute, which BTW, I take great pride in.

And if I see one more celebrity purposefully butcher the National Anthem, so help me God... :explode:

Wow why did your dislike for me have to come out in public?? Damn you! I do the best I can.

I hate the people who don't take off their hats too. Scott and I witnessed an older gentleman at a Skins game correct to youngsters in front of us for that. It was quite funny.

What actually happens?

Do people just shout during it for no reason?

Can someone give me an example?

That OHHHH thing started in Baltimore. The Oriole fans started it because it signified the 'O' for Orioles. They would say it towards the end of the National Anthem in the part......"Oh say does that Star Spangled Banner.........."

I also hate it when people say that in the National Anthem especially at a National's game.

Funny you should mention that. Last night's American Idol finale feautred one of the "Idol worsts'" clip of her singing the National Anthem HORRIBLY!!! Toward the end of the clip, the screen/curtain splits and the original contestant comes out to "finish" her rendition. I cringed the whole time, and I told my wife "why would FOX do that? That's disrespectful."

Of course, I answered my own question with that statement (it's FOX). I enjoyed the show, but that was probably the lowlight of the evening's telecast.

Hmmm, I guess if it's always at one particular point is wouldn't annoy me so much... but I've never seen it in practice...

I hate when people disrespect the national anthem, sitting down, not removing your hat, etc. etc. is a big pet peeve (unless it's part of a political statement, in which case I do support the right to symbolic speech)

I'm always confused because when I go to Sky Sox games (AAA baseball) they:

1.) Present the colors and flags are displayed around the pitching mound.

2.) They have a flag waving on the jumbotron type TV screen

3.) They have a flag always displayed in CF.

What flag and I supposed to face for the National Anthem?!

Are there rules on this sort of thing?!

Isn't Rupert Murdoch Australian or something?

How would he like it if we disrespected Australia's National Anthem:

"Parliment, it's Australian for Senate"

While I never chased down anyone I didn't know, I always disliked that same behavior as well. Unfortunately, at least in my experience, it was almost an expected behavior by higher ranking individuals than myself.

Being partially raised by a 15-year vet from the 50's and 60's (my grandfather), I must say the attitudes of my fellow Marines did not meet the standard my grandfather set, and was a big factor in my decision to get out.

I can't tell you how happy I am to see that I'm not the only one who feels this way. My dad fought in Korea and he taught me to respect those colors and that anthem. Keep it up, folks. And remind people what that anthem means!

I always say "O!" during the "Oh say does that Star Spangled Banner" part.

I think it lightens the mood during the anthem.

I always take my hat off during the singing, though, and I clap for a good performance. The anthem gets me pretty pumped up for games and it sort of unifies home and away fans for games. Well, for a couple minutes anyways. :?

The playing of any country's national anthem is a solemn moment. It should NEVER be cheapened by screaming, clapping or other acts while it's playing.

Is that actually true? I've heard the OH during the national anthem probably hundreds of times at various sporting events around the country.

Personally, I say to each his own. I take my hat off, put my hand over my chest, and usually stay quiet. But it doesn't necessarily bother me to see people take it more lightheartedly. Let freedom ring, right?

Yeah, its true. I read about it in the Washington Post. It was an article written just after the first home game the National's played. The writer of the article just wanted to make us aware, because he was insulted when he heard that during the first home game the Nationals played. I tried to find that article and put up a link, but I couldn't find it.

That is pretty odd...I know that I have heard the O during national anthems for football, baseball, soccer, NASCAR, etc. on TV. And I have seen it take place in parts of the country that are far away from B-more. Interesting to know that B-more started it all! Thanks for the info!
