Champ Bailey, Denver Broncos
When the Broncos gave up RB Clinton Portis to obtain Bailey from the Redskins, they thought they got a play-making, shutdown corner. The Broncos saw Bailey as a huge asset in the pass-happy AFC West. What they got were only three interceptions and no return yards -- not exactly the play-maker they were hoping for.

There was much discussion last season about the new illegal contact rule and how it would affect the elite cover corners. These changes didn't affect Bailey's game as much as his penchant for taking more chances in 2004. Despite all of his amazing physical skills, he repeatedly tried to outguess opposing quarterbacks and jump a lot of routes. As a result, he gave up too many big plays for an elite cover corner.

The Broncos' good overall defense ranked in the top 10 in 2004 in most defensive categories -- except for interceptions (12 INT, 27th in NFL). The low number of takeaways, combined with an offense that committed 33 turnovers, was a recipe for disaster. They need Bailey to give them some big plays to compensate for offensive mistakes. When Bailey's game hits on all cylinders, the rest of the Broncos' defense can blitz and gamble more, creating additional pressure on opposing QBs.

They're not telling me anything I/we didn't already know. How many big plays did Champ give up as a Redskins before going to Denver? A lot! This guy's best years are behind him, not ahead of him. I, for one, am soooooooooo freakin' glad we made that trade! We surely got the better end of the deal!

Eh....Clinton Portis didn't pay big dividends either, IMO. At least Champ finally got a whiff (and boy did he WHIFF!! :lol:

) of the playoffs, whereas Portis saw 6-10. I think both players needed to adjust to their new teams AND try to live up to their hype/contracts.

With a year under their belts, both players should be improved this year. My 2 cents

...oh yeah...as for Bailey getting blasted by ESPN, he was in Washington for several years, so it's nothing new to him. :lol:

There is no "shutdown" corner in the NFL. If Denver wants to shut down their opponent's passing game they need to start getting real defensive linemen instead of signing other teams castoffs (Darryl Gardner, Gerard Warren, Courtney Brown to name a few)

For some reason they only focused on Cleveland's castoffs....
as far has CB vs CP Portis had to adjust to a whole new scheme but Bailey was pretty much put on the same island that he's been on for years. He got beat just as much last season as he did the season before. He has a bigger spotlight on him because he was traded at a time when big names weren't swapped in the offseason.

This is the same justification they use when they say 1315 yards for a RB is a off year.

They did take Ron Dayne from the Gints on the offensive side.
Sauerbrun can be considered a cast off from Carolina with all the headaches. He's a tool.
Not defensive line, but castoffs anyway.

Do any of you remember the monday night game, broncos bengals? or the one in the snow... raiders bronocos?
Did you see baily got burned for a combined 5 times!?!
3 of which I remember being touchdowns... and thats just two games.

His opening game vs. Kc was decent, he had a crucial INT, and then it was downhill from there... F a champ baily...

yeah, 1300 yards rushing, better than all but 7 of the running backs in the nfl. we could get anyone to do that. :roll:

why do ppl think that 1300 yrds is not that big a deal? He was one of the top 10 backs in yardage right? So his TD's were real low, but you ask any of the teams that didn't have a 1,000 yard back if they would of loved to have 1,300 rush yards out of one of their backs and see what they say.

1300 yds is an impressive individual stat; no debate there. However, my point is that neither Bailey nor Portis dramatically improved there respective teams. Unless, of course, you consider a one-win improvement from a season ago a "huge" feat (Redskins).

I bet Portis would have traded half of the yardage he put up in exchange for the silly fumbles that were key in our losing games early in the year. My 2 cents
