Browns have interest in Boulware

The Browns are interested in acquiring four-time Pro Bowl linebacker Peter Boulware, an NFL source said Wednesday night.

But first, they must determine if Boulware is healthy and how much he wants to be paid, the source said. The Browns made some initial inquiries Wednesday night and will check into Boulware again today. If healthy, Boulware could be the pass-rush specialist the Browns sorely need.

The Ravens Wednesday released Boulware, who missed all of last season with injuries and hasn't played since a game in Cleveland at the end of 2003.

Browns General Manager Phil Savage was available during a news conference regarding Kellen Winslow Jr. Wednesday afternoon, but could not be reached after Boulware was released.

Savage was director of college scouting when the Ravens made Boulware the fourth overall pick of the 1997 draft. Savage counts Boulware among his many draft successes when he was with the Ravens and the two won a Super Bowl together in 2000.

Boulware told the Baltimore Sun he would be talking to the Bengals, who are coached by his former defensive coordinator Marvin Lewis. Boulware said he didn't know yet which other teams would be interested. Boulware's agent, Roosevelt Barnes, did not return a phone message.

Boulware, the Ravens' all-time sack leader with 67½, told reporters last week he's 100 percent healthy from his knee injury and subsequent turf toe surgery he had in December. He passed his physical in Baltimore Wednesday and was then cut, largely because of his high salary.

Boulware was set to make $6 million a year through the 2008 season. The Ravens tried and failed to restructure the deal with Barnes.

"We're at the point right now where we really felt that Peter could be, as he has been, an impact pass-rusher for us," Ravens coach Brian Billick said in a statement Wednesday. "He would like to see if there is more of an expanded role with someone else. He's earned that right, particularly [since] we were at a situation where the contract had to be restructured. We hate to see it happen, but that's the name of the game these days."

Team eyeing ex-Raven Boulware

The Seahawks are still looking to shore up their pass rush, and Peter Boulware is on their radar.

Boulware, older brother of Seahawks safety Michael Boulware, is on the market after being released by the Baltimore Ravens on Wednesday, and the Seahawks are believed to be one of several teams interested.

Peter Boulware, 30, is expected to visit team headquarters in Kirkland. The four-time Pro Bowler and former first-round draft choice is an eight-year veteran and Baltimore's all-time sacks leader, with 67 ½. But he didn't play last season because of a knee injury suffered late in 2003 and a toe injury suffered midway through last season during practice the week in which he was to make his return.

Before the injuries, Boulware had played in 111 straight regular-season games. Though he took and passed a physical in Baltimore on Wednesday and proclaimed his knee and toe to be fully healed — according to the Baltimore Sun — Boulware would have to take a physical as part of his visit with the Seahawks.

An outside linebacker in the Ravens' 3-4 defense, the 6-foot-4, 255-pound Boulware could be a defensive end for the Seahawks. Seattle added Bryce Fisher at defensive end in free agency and drafted similarly sized Jeb Huckeba in the fifth round, both to help the pass rush. But Boulware would bring his Pro Bowl credentials and proven sack ability from a quality defense if signed.

The Seahawks would have to create room under their salary cap to sign Boulware, who was released because he was due a high salary next season. That would likely involve releasing current players, because Boulware would probably command at least $2 million for a one-year contract.

The Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns are also interested in Boulware.

• The Chicago Bears met with former Seahawks LB Anthony Simmons on Wednesday, but did not sign him. Simmons was released by Seattle in March.

"He went to Houston, because they pushed hard for an early meeting with him, and he liked what he saw there. This won't be a world tour, but he will make some more (visits)," said agent Roosevelt Barnes.
