Console Wars Round Two

Post by EasyMoney »

MS vs. Sony round two. Any thoughts on which system will be better and why?

This next war should be pretty interesting. Similar processing speed, different approaches for graphics processing and both with HD's.

The graphics are coming close to real life though I don't expect to see anything like that for at least another 10 years or so. I read a quote from a developer/programmer somewhere that the graphics processors are so advanced for the next xbox that you could zoom from miles outside the earth onto a single leaf on a tree. Craziness.

Check out some screens for the next gen madden. NOT madden 06 but madden for the new machines.

EA always seems to release the NFC East images first don't they?

They'll be showing more of this in the first hour of the draft tomorrow.

Those aren't real screen shots. Look through that site. Theres an interview from an EA rep saying that those shots are an artists idea of what the next generation should be capable of.

However he did go on to say that the developers were dissapointed in those shots because they're supposedly under par.

Check out the draft because footage will be shown of this interpretation or the real game.

However the PS3 will be more powerful due to it coming out later than the Xbox 2. If the Revolution comes out after PS3 than it'll be the most powerful. Thats how it always is.

Its going to come down to who can garner the most support from 3rd party developers. Sony has a firm grip on this market for the past 2 years. Its a namebrand. Will Sony do to MS what they did to Sega? Only time will tell.

"CONFIRMED" shot of the Xbox-360. Xenon was its code name.

If the developers are disappointed with those "renderings" that kind of makes me happy. They should set that expectation bar high.

I knew those weren't screen shots but I thought they might be replay shots as EA usually shows them off first. I'm very curious to see what they'll be showing off tomorrow.

Power isn't as much of a factor as say... library and gameplay. All of the sole rights that Sony acquired in the first war are running out. Basically the only title they have left is Gran Tourismo and they'll probably keep that one forever. That game itself sells millions of consoles. The Square guy and bunch of other huge Japanese developers jumped ship. Apparently the developmental apps for the xbox 2 make it much easier to create games vs. Sony's. Which makes sense because the OS is an offshoot of the widely popular and widely used Windows. Sony/IBM have created what will eventually be a chip that's used for almost everything on the entire planet. The Triad chip or whatever it's called. The specs of that thing are incredible.

Will Sony do to MS what they did to Sega? No way. Gates' pockets are way too deep. Microsoft and Sony I would say have equal power as a namebrand company. The real question is will MS and Sony do what Sony did to Sega... to Nintendo?

I wasn't referring to Sony putting Sega out of business. I should have been more clear. Sony made people wait on buying the DC to check out the PS2 1st. Sony may do that again. With the later ship date, and better graphics (by default of newer technology due to more time to work on it) they can show some screens and have people wait like before.

Who knows what's going to happen. Im going to wait for the PS3 to come out before I decided what to buy. The PS2 has been out for 5 years.

Xbox came out 2 years after the PS2 and is launching a new console before the PS3...thats crazy. MS is anxious to get a jump on this new gen because they're losing so much money.

I have no doubt that when Sony releases their new console it's going to be quality. But I wonder how long they'll wait. I also wonder how much of a difference in graphics quality a few months is going to make. If it's anymore than a few months MS will have a huge head start. I can't imagine Sony would do that. I'm not sure that one upping them in graphics is going to make that much of a difference either.

Most people like what they like and they stick with it. Sony does that kind of volume in videogame sales because they pretty much own the market in Japan and like you said it was also released 2 years before the Xbox. Sega failed because their hardware (for the Dreamcast) was garbage. They didn't have a lot of 3rd party developers on board either. The launch releases for the PS2 were great. PS1 games were backwards compatible and it was a completely different approach as to what Nintendo was doing. This worked for them.

The Sony vs. Nintendo war had games like Madden, which was licensed by the NFL and the NFLPA for Sony’s version but not for Nintendo’s. As far as the American market is concerned, sports games as a whole dominate. As an American consumer I would go rather go with the game or games that are licensed. That was the start of their dominance.

In the second war, Sega couldn't keep up so they switched to software only. Big developers wouldn't make games for them.

In the current war Nintendo is keeping its loyal fans but their console sales were nothing compared to previous versions. They are now in 3rd. Sony had a leg up on MS from the get go. They almost pulled off having EA make games for the PS2 only, which would have killed MS. Instead they shortchanged MS for a while. Not until last year did both systems get equal functionality with their games. Nintendo is still being shortchanged by all kinds of developers. MS had to come up with launch games that in a round about way mimicked the games of PS2's launch. They didn't really pull it off. 4 years later the quality of both systems are evident although I do think the Xbox has surpassed the PS2 because of the processor speed. The loading times on the PS2 drive me crazy. Most games released now are for all three systems. The two big companies also do their best to make their own version of the others exclusive software.

I think it'll come down to do you really like Halo or do you really like Gran Tourismo? The quality of software is the same. Both are backwards compatible and both have a well established library. MS actually has more exclusive rights to games than Sony does at this point.

MS and these developers that jumped ship are saying they have quite the list of launch titles...

Either way, it's more fun in the future for us right?

This image came out not long after those above, and appears to incorporate the features of both pictures posted here so far.
