With that kind of speed and size, he could end up being a solid run stopper. In every draft there is always a diamond in the rough, this may end up being our gem.

The only knock on him is that he doesn't recognize plays very quick....if he is hardcore about this opportunity then he'll have his nose in the books and will sleep in the film room.

Dale Lindsay has a project in McCune, but he could turn out to be great....or atleast a special teams stud.

Also, Barrow is a really smart LB. Hopefully Barrow mentors this guy. McCune has the tools he just needs the football smarts.

(He was listed as "overrated" on a few sites before the draft...saying looks can be deceiving...in otherwords he's raw.)

McCune likely slid into the fifth round because of his age (26). He went to Louisville after a three-year stint in the Army, which included six months in Kuwait and a year in Korea. Although McCune isn't considered particularly refined or instinctive as a linebacker, he can bench-press 535 pounds and squat 565 pounds.
"Wait 'til you see this guy," Gibbs said with a laugh.
If McCune adapts quickly, he could challenge for the middle linebacker spot. Lemar Marshall, who replaced injured LaVar Arrington on the weak side last year, currently is slated to start, while long-injured Mike Barrow is scheduled for a final MRI on his knee on May 6 and could re-enter the mix if healthy.
"I'm not going in to take anyone's position," McCune said humbly. "I'm just going to take this opportunity to play in the NFL and learn from the other guys."

Yikes! How do you bench and sqat over 500lbs. and still run a 4.4-4.5 40 yards? He will be a project but the potential is definitely there.

Did you guys catch Joe Gibbs interview on Total Access?

They asked Coach Gibbs about this guy and he said his normal stuff on how he's gonna help this team in the long run, but then he did his little cackle and said, "This guy is so huge that if he ever does need to be cut I'm not gonna be the one to do it."

I can't wait until August!

Before you go nuts about McCune, consider that he went late in the draft because he can't or doesn't play pass defense. Everyone in football knows he's a beast against the run, but also, and I quote "he chases receivers rather than covers them."
I hope he and Clements are used on passing down as rushing DE's this year. Otherwise, he'll be on the pine for awhile or just on special teams.

Yeah, yeah, and Antonio Pierce was a late round pick too who everyone said would just be a special teamer. You are quoting the evaluation of a journalist?

Let's watch him work with GW for ourselves.

I found some highlight footage of McCune & Newberry.

McCune is a beast; he hesitates to read the play, then he's off and running. He's running all over the field and people!!

Newberry has good size, is a great tackler and has some really amazing closing speed, highlighted several times in his video.

I have a feeling that, with a little coaching attention, this guy is going to become a monster. Watching video, he reminded me a little of Mike Singletary (you old guys will know hat I mean).

There are alot of MLB's that every team had that couldn't cover their mother. The Skins had their share, Milot, Gouveia, Olkowitz...
It is not the MLB's job to cover the RB or TE most of the time. Even on the nickle package he will either come out or get help from another DB. I just hope he can pick the right holes to fill. I can't wait to see him this weekend at mini-camp.

I'd attribute his lack of ability to read plays quickly to not being a fulltime football player. This guy obviously has had his mind on other things which has set him at a disadvatage to kids who do nothing but football. I believe he has the smarts to pick things up he just needs the time to adjust and get in the mindset. We may have found one of our many gems that have yet to be uncovered in this draft.

I have a brother with the same stats and a better bench press who sat on the pine in college ball. I, too, hope the guy's great, but don't get too hyped. A lot of freaks can't play, a lot play so so. You can't tell at this point. Scouts say he plays bad pass defense and doesn't anticipate plays well and therefore gets a lot of assists but few solos. Personally, I'd like to see him used as DE in some packages.

He'll be a great leader in the locker room and in workouts which is important. I remember when I was in boot camp, the drill sergeants were complete beasts.

We would be in the middle of a 4 mile run in the woods of Georgia, every one is tired and out of breath except them. They run right beside you calling cadence, and yelling at you. They even turn around and backpedal to yell at you while you are barely keeping in line.

I can't wait to see him work with our defense.

I agree that the guy had a lot more important things going on in life than football. Especially since he got into college on his military scholarship as opposed to an athletic one. With his maturity and work ethic I don't doubt that he will make his new job/life, football, his #1 priority and excel at it or die trying. He has all the tools.

Besides, he doesn't have to be a shut-down coverage guy. All he has to do is flatten the guy within the first 5 yards
