A deal for Simeon Rice?

Post by fleetus »

John Clayton ESPN said this morning on XM that Tampa was rumored to be considering trading Rice to San Diego for their #28 pick in the 1st round. We probably can't afford him but was thinking, didn't Gruden show interest in Gardner? Maybe we package a pick and Gardner for Rice thus freeing up some cap space for Rice. We could possibly see if Rice would re-structure his deal.

Couple of scenarios:

1) Rice and #36 pick for Garner and #25 pick
2) Rice for Gardner and future 2nd or third rounder
3) Rice, #5 and #35 for Gardner, #9 and #25 and future middle rounder

We could sure use a dominant edge rusher if it's affordable, food for thought anyway.

What's wrong with Rice? He's a beast, and would certainly fill the need for a dominating pass rusher. Just wondering.

He'd command a big paycheck with money we don't got.... all for a 31 year old DE.... we'd just add fire to the laughing stock pile...

generally agree Rice is probably overpaid and not worth it. But, if the Bucs are trying to dump him and we can kill two birds with one stone by moving Gardner, it might be interesting. Definitely a longshot.

Redeemed you amaze me yet again. It's ok for you to like a player solely on their religious dedication (ie Wuerfel), who has little to no talent, yet Joe cannot say Rice is bad news because of his lack of dedication to any moral background?? Does that make sense in the least?? Just thought I'd put that statement into perspective for you.

I'm with BTP on this though. Let's not add to our colection of older football players that cannot tread water!

Niki, what are you saying? I asked for an explanation? Is that a crime? I guess we cross-amazed each other on this issue, cause I sure don't understand what I did wrong. :hmm:

I didn't realize Rice was that old, but he can still bring the heat. If we could get him at an affordable price (yes, it's a reach), I think he'd be worth it. He may not be able to tread water for 5-6 years down the road, but right now, his propellers still work and he can still rush the QB.

On a personal note: Good to see you around these here parts NikiH. It had been a while since I'd seen you post with such frequency. Hope all is working out at the new gig.

It wasn't an attack Redeemed, sorry if you took it that way. I was merely saying Joe had the right to dislike or discount a player because of his attitude/lack of respect. Back to the subject, no one is available for a reasonable price in the NFL these days. ;-)

No biggie, Niki.

However, other than the age & salary concerns, what are Rice's potential drawbacks?

He hasn't been injury prone, has he?

I personally wont forget Rice calling Pat Tillman "not a real good player" therefore his giving up his NFL career to join the military wasnt that big of a deal.

He as classless then and I sure he still is. Old, classless and in demand of money? Sounds like a few players from the 2000 squad, eh?
