NEW YORK (AP) -- The struggling New York Yankees will be hit with a record luxury tax this year.
Initial projections by the commissioner's office based on opening-day rosters have the Yankees owing $30,637,531, according to information obtained this week by The Associated Press.
he only other team projected to owe a tax is the World Series champion Boston Red Sox, who would pay $969,177.
Going into Wednesday night, the Yankees were just 5-9, tied with Tampa Bay for last place in the American League East.
For the luxury tax, payrolls are based on the average annual values of contracts for all players on the 40-man roster and include benefits. . .
Put it to you this way. We went to a minor league baseball game a couple of weeks back, and the announcer mentioned that the Mega Millions jackpot was up to 120 million. Then they added, if you win that, you can pay for half of the yankees annual payroll.

I believe there is a revenue sharing agreement in relation to the luxury tax but I'm not 100% positive. Maybe they'll give the nats a little love since they're screwing us on TV rights, no ownership group, etc... Thankfully, the Nats are a scrappy bunch.

Everyone talks about the Yankees, but the Redskins are the same way! If the NFL didn't have a salary cap, how much do you think the Redskins pay-roll would be, seriously?????? I'd say more then the Yankees!
By the way, this Luxury Tax thing is crap! NO (Pro) team should have to donate money to cheap owners who don't want to spend money on their OWN teams. Is it the Yankees fault that fans don't go to certain stadiums??
I'm not saying everything the Yankees do are right, but it is what it is. Last year the Yanks had an average attendance of 47,000 (roughly) out of 55,000 seats. Instead of George puting the money in his pocket, he puts it into the team. I don't think there's anything wrong with that!
I hear you man. My mom is actually a big Yankee's fan b/c her uncle was in the yanks minors back in the 50s. This sounds nuts but he was called up to the majors and went to hang out with his friends one last time before heading to the big city and he drowned... how much does that suck? Anyways, I've just never liked them.

I agree the Yankees shouldn't have to pay a luxury tax. If other teams maximized their income potential it would be one thing, but they don't.
I understand the impact playing in the largest media market has on the Yankees' payroll, but the Mets share that same market and simply don't even attempt to generate the revenue the Yankees do. The Yankees gambled on on the YES network and that paid off, the Mets continue to have a mediocre deal with a local network affiliate.
Throw in a team like the Brewers. They sit and do nothing, waiting for Barry Bonds to come to town to reap the benefits of a sell out.
