Ok, ok, ok... I let this thread go on long enough without interjecting my whole 2 cents...
1) Giving up the 4th rounder next year seems superfluous to me... I think that a 3rd this year and a first next year was plenty good enough... especially considering a) the lack of superstar talent in this draft and b) the fact that it's a LOW first round pick.
2) We need the pick though. It will make a huge difference in the things we can do in this draft... most of which have been mentioned or hinted at already in this thread. If the Redskins now use their own first round pick to get a second this year and a first next year, we'll have done pretty well. We will have swapped the #9 pick, our 3rd round pick and the 1st and 4th next year, for the #25 pick, a second rounder and next year's first... actually a decent deal though it would depend a lot on what next year's draft positions are.
3) One of the BEST points made in all of this is that with cap 'troubles' supposedly on the horizon.... not having a first round pick in 2006 will just mean that it's one less salary to worry about in 2006 if we don't regain our first rounder next year...
4) The lack of superstar talent only affects the #9 pick in this draft, there are LOTS of good prospects worthy of a #25 pick. This actually puts us in a WAY better bargaining position for both dealing the #9 pick and/or dealing Gardner.
5) Like many stated... looking too far ahead in the modern NFL is an absolute waste of time. That doesn't mean that you can be careless and stupid, but it does mean that you have to look to the present as much or more than the future. This trade does that for us. Worst case scenario we can keep both first rounders, grab two bonafide potential starters and definitely help field a better 2005 squad.
6) there's a good chance that the Skins will get a pick BACK next year when the league formulates the compensatory picks (which the Redskins would seem a likely recipient having lost Smoot, and Pierce)
The last thing that I'd like to point out is that all of the conjecture in the world doesn't mean squat unless you're in the head of Joe Gibbs. The internet has created a cess pool of bad prognosticating where BS leads are run as fact all of the time.
How many reporters reported this trade possibility?
You just never know what's going on is the bottom line. The Redskins could have made this deal because they have another one in place, they could have made the deal because they know they have two players targeted to help this team that they'll get at #9 and #25.
Or it could just be a lopsided trade that we accepted to get better right away.
It'll sure make Saturday's festivities a little longer.

Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.
