Relax Chris. It's hard to understand why this trade makes sense. The 25th pick is simply not worth that much. This years 3rd, and next years 1st and 4th? Fine we'll probably get a 4th as a compensatory pick for Smoot or Pierce or both, but next years 1st?
I have my doubts as well. They must have several late 1st rounders they would be comfortable with; from a value standpoint, it doesn't look good

The thing I like the least is this nonsense of Cerrato saying we definately won't trade the 9th and then Gibbs coming back and saying we would consider it if we were presented with the right offer. What the h*** is that? Cerrato needs to choose his words with more care. Of course we would consider trading the pick. Why shut the door to something when you don't know what is being offered?
I accept trades like this even if they don't make sense to me; they know more about football talent and what needs they can address. But Cerrato's statements? That's just plain dumb.

Washington Gives Up Three for Broncos' First-Round Choice

With most NFL analysts believing this weekend's draft is one of the weakest in memory, the Washington Redskins yesterday surprisingly traded their No. 1 pick next season and two other picks to the Denver Broncos for the 25th overall selection Saturday.

The Broncos will also get Washington's third-round pick this season and its fourth-round pick in 2006. The deal leaves the Redskins with only two picks on Saturday: the ninth and 25th.
Coach and team president Joe Gibbs was not at Redskins Park yesterday and was unavailable to comment.

"That's a pretty steep price to pay for [pick] No. 25," one NFL executive said. "They must be up to something else."

The days approaching the draft are filled with speculation about what teams will do. That has been especially true this year because this draft has no clear No. 1 pick and is considered to lack the star power of recent years. Many teams in the top five are reportedly willing to trade down to get more picks and avoid paying the high signing bonus and salary required of a high selection.

Vinny Cerrato, the Redskins' vice president of football operations, said after the trade was announced that the Redskins have informed all 31 other NFL teams of their willingness to trade down. "We're looking to acquire picks rather than give them up," he said. "We're looking at adding a number of players and not just one guy."

But others around the league believed Cerrato could be bluffing and chatter about the Redskins' intentions began immediately after the trade was announced.

One NFL source who has spoken to officials from many clubs said he expected the Redskins to trade the first-round picks for a better selection that would allow them to draft Michigan wide receiver Braylon Edwards, considered by many to be the best player available in the draft. Another source was certain the Redskins would use the picks on two Auburn players: cornerback Carlos Rogers and quarterback Jason Campbell. ESPN reported Campbell is the Redskins' target.

The Redskins have the oldest coaching staff in the league and, coming off a 6-10 season and without a playoff berth since 1999, are looking for an immediate turnaround. But they have holes to fill in the secondary and at No. 1 wide receiver. They lost out on acquiring Oakland Raiders cornerback Philip Buchanon last night when the Houston Texans acquired the disgruntled starter in a trade for two early round draft picks.

Redskins officials, who are scheduled to hold a news conference today to discuss the draft, brought in most of the top cornerback and receiver prospects for individual visits leading up to the draft.

The day began in bizarre fashion at Redskins Park. Team officials issued a series of seemingly contradictory statements about what they were planning to do with their first-round pick. First, the team's Web site and a news release said the Redskins would not trade their No. 1 pick. The site said the Redskins "will use their first-round pick to select a player in this weekend's upcoming draft" and Cerrato was quoted in a statement as saying, "We are not trading that pick."

But Gibbs issued a statement contradicting both, saying the team will "consider anything."

"Are we considering any options we are presented with? Yes, we'll consider anything" Gibbs said in the statement.

As team president, Gibbs, not Cerrato, has final say on all personnel decisions. Gibbs had said on Friday that the Redskins were discussing trade scenarios with "four or five teams" and that trading down was possible. He reiterated that Monday as well.
Last night, Cerrato said he had been misquoted in the team's statement and that the team had always planned to trade the No. 9 pick. He said his comment should have only stated that the Redskins would not trade the No. 9 pick in a deal for Buchanon. The Washington Post, citing league sources, reported yesterday that the team had explored several trade scenarios and one involved obtaining Buchanon and the Raiders' second-round pick, the 38th overall, for Washington's first-round pick. Essentially, the team would move down 31 picks and get one of Oakland's starting cornerbacks.

Cerrato indicated the team had concluded the price was too high and the Redskins have no intention of trading their picks for an established player. Instead, Houston General Manager Charley Casserly, formerly of the Redskins, won the bidding war for Buchanon last night by giving the Raiders a second- and a third-round pick in this year's draft, according to a source.
Last night, a source close to the Buchanon trade said the Redskins had made a bid to acquire the cornerback.

Cerrato said the contradictory statements do not reflect division in the front office and that all team officials agree on the plan to trade down and will continue working in that fashion.

It has been a tumultuous offseason for the team, which has done little to appease critics of its front-office structure. The team is run by Cerrato, owner Daniel Snyder and Gibbs, and does not have a general manager, which detractors say is to blame for the team's inability to make the playoffs since 1999.

Wide receiver Laveranues Coles believed he had been promised his release by the team's front office in January and instead said he was threatened by Snyder when Coles refused to immediately accept a trade.

Coles was eventually traded to the New York Jets.

Linebacker LaVar Arrington remains mired in a dispute with the front office over a $6.5 million bonus payment he believes the team agreed to give him but then left out of his contract. A date has not been set for Arrington's grievance hearing against the team.

Two prominent free agents departed as linebacker Antonio Pierce signed with the New York Giants and cornerback Fred Smoot joined the Minnesota Vikings.

Ok, first, we are not getting Buchnanon because the Raiders made the trade with the Texans for a 2nd and 3rd rd pick (ESPN).

Now, with this new development, this adds a lot of intrigue. Now, if I heard this correct, the Skins are focusing on QB in #25. What you don't realize they say QB. This could be the ultimate smoke screen of getting Matt Jones. You know Gibbs and Co. would never reveal their secret. Now, here's the strange part of this and follow me on this. If it's possible that Mike Williams is there at 9 and Matt Jones at 25, Gibbs would be in heaven. Everyone is saying Heath Miller, but those two prospects, I think Gibbs is licking his chops.

Now, the wild card in this is Aaron Rodgers. If the 49ers select Alex Smith, Of what i heard, Rodgers could drop to lower first round. Dude, that's scary and that could be the QB Gibbs is looking for. There are endless possibilities, but I think Gibbs pull the right trigger because You know your going to be capped out next year, save money.

To me, this makes sense only if:

1)The Skins are absolutely sold on the idea they must have a better quarterback to get to the superbowl and Campbell is the only possible guy out there they can get in the next couple of years who has the requisite potential.

OR

2)The Skins are absolutely convinced Matt Jones will quickly achieve superstar status and are willing to give a first, third, and forth for him. Clearly, there's no other player out there who might have his freakish kind of upside, if long shot, potential. Add to that that he could line up at TE on one play and at WR or HB or the slot on the next and they might see him as the equivalent of a couple of guys, confusion-wise.

As a fan who would love to see some interesting hijinks on offense this season, I hope reason number 2 is part of the Redskin thinking. If it is, I'm all for the trade. Otherwise, I don't know.

By the way, I don't believe all the trade up or trade down theories. This one look like the real move to me.

This trade seems kind of sheisty…..

First of all, 3rd round (76th pick) isn’t such a big deal, but still good to have.

Next year’s 4th rounder, in fact, any 4th rounder...aint nothing big...

However, next year's 1st round pick too?? That's the sheisty part....because you never know where we'll be at next year...we could end up with the #10 pick!…

Or, on the bright side, we could end up with #25 next year….So basically the Bronc-hos will get our future #25 pick in return for their current #25 pick. Therefore they'd cancel out.

Denver gains our 4th rounder (who cares??) and our 3rd rounder?? No big deal…

Therefore, what’s basically happening is…we get two 1st round picks this year!...but, no 1st round picks next year. It’s kind of like we’re using our future 1st rounder for the draft coming up in a few days. The Redskins are up to something....

We still have a 2nd rounder for this year so it can’t be so bad.

What I like about this trade is it sets the bar high for the Redskins to excel next season.

I am certainly not a draft guru, but here is what I think. The Skins are gonna trade the #9 pick for a couple of 2nd rounders. We're gonna pick the best CB available at #25 and the best LB and, you heard it here first, QB McPherson in the 2nd round.

Just a hunch.

Frankly, I have no idea what the hell is going to happen...or what the hell I'm talking about. I'm just throwin' this mess out there for discussion like everyone else.

Needless to say, draft day #1 will be a lot of fun!

When Joe Gibbs and Bobby Beatherd ran the team in the 80's, the Skin's traded the future for the present all the time and it worked out fine. If they get the guy or guys they want then we'll be okay.
IMHO think this is just the start of more wheeling and dealing this year. I think #9 will be traded for more picks. Gardner will be traded for a 3rd or 4th rd pick.
If ESPN says we will be drafting a QB at #25 then that is the smoke screen the Skin's want to put up. I think we will draft a QB this year just not with a 1st round pick.
Anyway just drink the kool-aid with me and trust in Gibbs.

I kinda like this trade. They can now pick at #9 and #25 or trade #9 for more picks. Everyone knows that we have more than one hole to fill. I think this trade addresses the fact that the coaches realize that and are attempting to remedy it this season. Good show.

The only thing that would make me freak is if they trade UP. That would be truly frightening because we would be mortgaging our future on one guy. I can't believe that Gibbs would do that. But you never know...

Regardless, I can't wait for Day 1. It will be interesting!

This is a very deep draft, we got the 25th pick that we can use on Jason Campbell, Matt Jones, Heath Miller, Channing Crowder, Matt Roth, etc.

I am very excited about the Redskins next year, we're getting an influx of youth and perhaps even a new QB... although I prefer to think that if we WERE targeting Campbell we wouldn't climb the belltower and shout it to everyone :\

I don't understand it but what about this. With the Buchanhon deal squashed (thank God), Taking our CB with nine, I hope Pacman if he's still on the board and looking like a QB all of a sudden, everybody says Jason Campbell. But Im also thinking swap the 9th with another first rounder and pick up the valuable 2nd rounder. Hopefully 2 first rounders and a second. With them grab our 3 needs. I would imagine Justin Miller a CB by the time our pick would arrive, Maybe Reggie Brown or Roddy White for the WR at the 25th pick, and hopefully with a second round pick Charlie Frye from Akron at QB, who I belive will be the best QB in this draft. I do believe the last MAC QB drafted's name is Rothliesberger.
