Draft Marcus Lawrence in the 4th round

Post by C'fieldSkin »

Marcus Lawrence was the middle linebacker for South Carolina last year and should be available in the 4th round. He would be able to provide depth behind Barrow and be able to start if Barrow is hurt allowing Marshall to play in place of Lavar if his knee isn't ready. We definately need to draft a middle linebacker and there isn't much difference in the best MLB and the rest of them. He would be good value and a smart pick.

This is the ESPN profile on him. I saw him play a lot last year in person and he looks good. He was a beast in the SEC and could be a great pickup down the road. I'd love to see him replace Barrow as the starter after a year of coaching.

Marcus Lawrence Grade: 3.52
Position: ILB
Class: Sr
School: South Carolina
Conference: SEC
Ht., Wt.: 6-2, 243
40 Time: 4.68
Grading System

BIO: Junior college transfer who totaled 57 tackles with 2 tackles for loss as a senior, after posting 99/9.5/1 the previous season.

POSITIVES: Explosive linebacker coming off a disappointing campaign. Stacks well against the run, flashes on the scene and displays suddenness to his game. Puts his shoulders down, punishing ballcarriers and wraps up into tackles. Solid lateral range, displays a burst of closing speed and plays faster than his 40 time. Defeats blocks getting to the action and aggressive.

NEGATIVES: Not overly instinctive in pass coverage. Does not always fill the correct gap in run defense. Takes himself out of the action and slow locating the ball.

ANALYSIS: After looking like an up-and-comer as a junior, Lawrence took a big step back last season. Must get his game back on track, but at the very least, a solid backup for a number of linebacker positions.

PROJECTION: Late Third Round

I like this guy...would be a smart pick

He looks good. I don't know what the other options are for 4th round back-up linebackers, but I'm confident that as long as they have the requisite physical skills, then Greg Williams will be able to coach'em up.

I'd rather take DT C.J. Mosley in the 4th round

If Channing Crowder falls to us in the third, as he is rumored to be, I'd say take him (as much as it pains me to advocate taking a Gator over a Gamecock). I hope one of the two ends up with us though. Youth and speed is always good to have at the LB position.

No way Channing Crowder will fall to the 3rd Round. Even with his off field problems, that guy can play 1st Round material football and should be gone by the first few picks of the 2nd Round if not higher.

I think our mlb spot is fine...but it does worry me if one of our olb's get hurt then lemar has to go to olb and our mlb will be someone else
